Why Breaking Statues Can Be an Act of Patriotism
In this video, I discuss an event that occurred on August 5, 2024, after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's regime. During her rule, Sheikh Hasina invested public money into building numerous statues, murals, and monuments dedicated to her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also known as Bangabandhu. While Sheikh Mujibur Rahman holds a significant place in Bangladesh’s history, the people's anger erupted on the day of her downfall, leading to the breaking of these statues.
Some have criticized this act, calling it disrespectful. However, from a secular perspective, this could be seen as a necessary step toward a healthier political culture. As Singapore’s former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew famously stated, he refused to have statues or monuments in his honor to prevent political exploitation of his image after his death. He believed such practices could lead to corruption and idol worship, diverting attention from the nation’s progress.
Similarly, in Bangladesh, these statues became tools for Sheikh Hasina to mask her government’s corruption and authoritarianism, using Bangabandhu’s legacy as a shield. The breaking of these statues wasn’t an attack on the legacy of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman but a symbolic act to reject idol worship and demand accountability in leadership.
True patriotism lies in working for the country, not glorifying individuals to the extent that their images are used to cover up wrongdoing. If we love Bangladesh, we should focus on building a nation rooted in integrity and progress, not in preserving symbols that are misused for political gain.

এই ভিডিওতে আমি আলোচনা করেছি ২০২৪ সালের ৫ আগস্ট ঘটে যাওয়া একটি ঘটনাকে কেন্দ্র করে। শেখ হাসিনার শাসনের পতনের পর, যিনি তার শাসনামলে জনগণের অর্থ ব্যবহার করে তার বাবা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের নামে সারা বাংলাদেশে অসংখ্য ভাস্কর্য, মুরাল, এবং স্মারক নির্মাণ করেছিলেন। যদিও বঙ্গবন্ধু বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নাম, কিন্তু সেদিন তার মেয়ের শাসনের পতনের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে জনরোষে এই ভাস্কর্যগুলি ভেঙে ফেলা হয়।
অনেকে এই ঘটনাকে অসম্মানজনক বলে সমালোচনা করেছেন। তবে একটি ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে, এটি দেশের রাজনৈতিক সংস্কৃতি সুস্থ করার জন্য একটি প্রয়োজনীয় পদক্ষেপ ছিল। সিঙ্গাপুরের সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী লি কুয়ান ইউয়ের কথা মনে করুন, যিনি তার মৃত্যুর আগে নির্দেশ দিয়েছিলেন তার নামে কোনো ভাস্কর্য বা স্মারক না বানানোর জন্য। তার যুক্তি ছিল, এই ধরনের ভাস্কর্য ভবিষ্যতে তার চিত্রকে ব্যবহার করে দুর্নীতি এবং অপকর্ম বাড়াতে পারে।
বাংলাদেশেও একইভাবে, শেখ হাসিনা বঙ্গবন্ধুর ভাস্কর্য ব্যবহার করেছেন তার সরকারের দুর্নীতি এবং কর্তৃত্ববাদ লুকানোর জন্য। এই ভাস্কর্য ভাঙার ঘটনা বঙ্গবন্ধুর ঐতিহ্যের উপর আঘাত নয়, বরং মূর্তি পূজার প্রতি একটি প্রতিবাদ এবং নেতৃত্বের জবাবদিহিতা দাবি করার একটি প্রতীকী পদক্ষেপ।
সত্যিকারের দেশপ্রেম হলো দেশের জন্য কাজ করা, ব্যক্তিবিশেষকে এমনভাবে গৌরবান্বিত করা নয় যে তার ছবি এবং মূর্তি রাজনৈতিক স্বার্থে ব্যবহার করা যায়। আমরা যদি বাংলাদেশকে ভালোবাসি, তাহলে আমাদের উচিত একটি সৎ এবং অগ্রগতিশীল জাতি গড়ার দিকে মনোযোগ দেওয়া, সেই প্রতীকগুলিকে নয় যা রাজনৈতিক সুবিধার জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়।
