I have a question about the use of literally, this word. The teacher, Gabe, said "you literally toss and turn," when the teacher tried to explain the phrase. I heard lots of young people use this word, literally, very often in their daily conversation. I wonder what this word exactly means? I guess it might mean "basically or truly."

Good question! Literally means using the real or original meaning of a word. So if I literally toss and turn in my bed, it doesn’t just mean that I couldn’t sleep (that’s what “toss and turn” COULD mean, even if I didn’t actually toss and turn in bed. The way many people use it is for emphasis, even though it may not be the real meaning of the following words. If I say “it’s literally raining cats and dogs” of course there are no cats and dogs falling from the sky, but this usage makes it seem like the rain was really heavy. Hope this helps. ---from Gabe
