Used to live in Duisburg where this is brewed, a fantastic pilsner
@lightoftheworld4173 жыл бұрын
First beer I tried in Dusseldorf. Arrived on a Monday night and went into a small bar before close and tried this Pilsner was so beautiful. That was a great time, too see Kraftwerk at the K20. The following nights after the shows I would drink the Alt Beer. I don't think there is a single beer in Germany I wouldn't appreciate. Even in Berlin buying cheap bottles of Berliner still very enjoyable. Harp Carlsberg, Bud what we have on tap here is just piss water.

Just had it for lunch. Really good pilsner. So balanced and drinkable.

I feel like in Germany, no matter how much they may play around with flavours, they always stick to their roots.
@patrickbateman66473 жыл бұрын
True, that's because of the German "Reinheitsgebot" ("purity order") :-) Edit: Ah okay, he also mentions it in the video :D

Mango, marshmallow, lactose and other things haven't made a carbonated drink a beer, never. The German purity law is a life saver, UN should adopt it.
@robin_1233 жыл бұрын
No, therefore the pilsners all tastes boring in germany. Good beers are weissbier, helles (both mostly from Bavaria) and some craft beers. Pilsners tastes all similar. Everyone in Germany have their own favourite pilsner, which is mostly the nearest brewery in the region, and then there is no need to try another pilsner, because there is no big difference. Warsteiner, KöPi, Becks, Holsten, Radeberger, Krombacher, Veltins, Flensburger...
@joebidensdentures45413 жыл бұрын
@@robin_123 Thanks for the perspective. I agree most Pils pretty much taste the same. That's not a bad thing, they're brewed to style. My local Aldi sells Wernesgruner Pils for $6.99 a six, I can get Warsteiner for $14.99 a twelve pack. Ice cold on an 87 degree Summer day after mowing the grass, they're both quite enjoyable.
@robin_1233 жыл бұрын
@@joebidensdentures4541 of course, i also wouldnt deny a good cold pilsner on a hot summer day or after a hard working day. You know what you get - thats good about it. But somehow i think the purity law is also a bit of a barrier to the beer versatility, and of course also a marketing strategy.
@joebidensdentures45413 жыл бұрын
@@robin_123 Have you had a chance to try the Bitburger/Sierra Nevada collaboration beer "Triple Hop'd Lager"? I can get it locally and it's a really quality lager. Cheers!

I forgot to add that it is remarkable how cheap Konig is here in Texas $5.99 for a four-pack of 500ml cans. . .much cheaper than the local crap.

That's one law I must say I really love. The 1516 German purity law.

I really enjoy this beer. By the way, Reinheitsgebot is pronounced like RINE-hites-ga-boat. König means King.

@John Jensen I speak German. I was just trying to provide a phonetic English spelling. Most people are not familiar with the linguistic phonetic alphabet because it has unique characters and symbols. I think it’s a word Simon may come across and try to pronounce quite a bit since it’s related to beer. I do understand that it might be difficult for an adult who has never learned German to try to pronounce the word. At least with Reinheitsgebot, there are no sounds that don’t also exist in English, except for the German R pronunciation, which is more at the back of the mouth.

And I agree with the other point as well! Too many breweries are going for those flavor blasted chocolate milkshake smoothie beers and it just isn't beer for me. The flavor is cool to sip, but its not what I would like in a beer

Don’t want to undermine this beer but living in Germany and trying loads of Pilseners (and other beers) Königs Pilsener is very average, but do buy it from time to time. Good review Simon.

Btw: König Pilsener is one of my favorite Beers here in Germany...you have to try "Augustiner Edelstoff" what can be translated with "Augustiner noble material" :D that's great.

Köpi is a nice enough North German Pils, but I'd always go for Jever, though it is much less bitter than it once was.

Absolutely agree on that Jever seems to decrease the bitterness over the years to be more drinkable for more people. Good north German Pilsener is also Flensburger

This Duisberg beer was available on tap in Scotland 35 years ago. Some deal with TCB. It's well made but too dry for my palate. Prefer the maltier and slightly sweeter pale beers from Southern Germany.

I was a craft beer nut for the last 15 years and was always looking for the next crazy beer out there. However lately I'm totally getting completely away from that and going for more drinkable classic European beers and macro US/Mexican beers. I've learned that I really just like the taste of beer and not all of these adjunct flavors that the craft breweries are adding these days. There are still some excellent craft beers out there however some of the German and Czech beers are still the best.
@hefipaleburp95433 жыл бұрын
Even if this is mass produce still the quality is very good. Much better than any in the US of A. I mean this come from a country of beer and engineering.

Fun Fact: That's the brew Anheuser-Busch selled under their name in the stadiums at the FIFA World Cup in Germany in 2006, because Budweiser US wasn't allowed to sell their crap by german law. Any "beer" that violates the german purification law is not allowed to be sold as "beer", so they asked König Pilsener if they could brew a beer for them.

Great review Simon! it's cracker of a pilsner. There was one beer shop near me that sold it years ago (back in 2013-2015) in 330ml bottles at about €1.15 a bottle. I'm more of a golden ale drinker during the summer months, but I found myself drinking a lot of this pilsner for the few years they stocked it. It's a shame it's just become unavailable on the entire island of Ireland now, I would have a few of them every Friday if they were brought back.
