I did a repack after the left brake hose locked up the caliper, but the heat killed the bearing just 5000 miles later. Now I have to go in there again, and this video helps a lot because I've never replaced bearing races before. Gonna tackle it this weekend. Update: Tackled it, and WOW the passenger bearing was SHOT. Thanks again for this video. Now, I just need to go back in, replace the seal I damaged on installation, and also replace both spindle bearings. Fun times.

Good video. I own a 78 k10 I need to change the bearing lockers etc. same issue. Just had motors rebuilt trans etc. question. When I had my trans done the guy recommend trans braces. My trans was ripped down the center. He think it’s because the transmission needs a brace. I’m not super savvy. But isn’t it held up with a brace? Or just attached to the transfer case? And motor.
@JonHolovach6 ай бұрын
I’ve seen trans crack in these trucks with out that brace from the transfer case to the transmission bell housing. One of the squares I used to mud bog with had a 203 big heavy t case I had that brace plus made an extra that would support the back of the transfer case to take the weight.

@@JonHolovach yea I’ll have to take it in and see what they can do. Don’t want to drive it like it is. Thanks for the good advice. I’m trying to get this truck back into shape and it should last another 50 years.

Do the front axle shafts seat somehow? I changed the u-joints but putting the shaft back in seems to go in all the way to the u-joint and it doesn't feel like installing a drive shaft. It just feels like it is laying in the tube.
@JonHolovach2 ай бұрын
Well the splines should engage the big yoke should almost touch the axle tube if seated all the way in

Which lock ring?
@thesetruths14043 жыл бұрын
I was going to clean up the locking hub and spray with light silicone lubricant. Would this be sufficient? I hear if wheel grease is used it makes them hard to turn in cold weather. Is this true?
@JonHolovach3 жыл бұрын
Heavy grease can make them hard to turn. I actually just use a regular synthetic grease same as you use for ball joints. They seem to be fine with that.

You just have to make sure that it is for the size of the rim you have like a 15. Also depends on how much lift you have also. Bigger the tire the more lift you need.
