Hello, can I get some guidance here please. So after the last oil change on my k1200s 07, the engine doesn't get the oil from the container and gets pushed back into the container. Is this a case of not creating a vacuum when i changed the oil and some air remained into the oil pump is this possible only after a simple oil change? I can i get this fixed. Thanks in advance

Thanks for very detailed video, it's a pity I havn't seen it earlier when I was changing my gearbox, as I could put this plastic part on cam shaft's drive sprocket. I have 2006 K1200R and gear box failed. It started to slip 5th gear and then just droped into neutral between 5th and 6th. I havn't found reason why it happend but I put a newer gearbox with precuted gearweel's dogs.

Hi Patrique! Thanks for all the good information! Its comes in good hand for me now when i have to change my clutch (including basket) on my K1200S -06. I was lucky to buy a spare part engine, a K1300S -11 with low milage. But i have now come to meet a problem, the sprocket on the backside of the basket to the oilpump-chain has 26 teeth (oilpump 24) instead of the original 25 (oilpump 25) so the chain is too short. Do you know if its possible to ”upgrade” my K1200 with the newer 5,5bar oilpump to make it work? And do you know where i can find the information to bleed the pump after the replacement? Many thanks for your advises //The Swede Robin
@phofmann19126 жыл бұрын
Yes, the chain will be short because its made for 25/25 4,5 bar and 26/24 5.5bar. That extra tooth on a 26/25 setup wont work.... i believe the pump is the same, just spinning faster. If you wanted to replace the 4,5 pump with the 5,5 you need to drop the oil pan and remove the exhaust system (i trust that you know what you are doing.... :-) ) The procedure to prime the oil system is described in the reprom maintenance manual. It basically calls for creating vacuum on the oil return line going back to the oil tank via a huge syringe (the size of a silicone cartridge tube) and cranking the engine without ignition/fuel injection.

Thanks man for all your help! :) I will replace/upgrade my oilpump and hope it will work fine. Keep up the good work! :)

Watch this video (in spanish from 50:00 onwards) and he shows you how not to do it..... including rattle gun (at start of video), getting the allen key stuck and struggling to get the basket in....... And to top it off, he dumps oil on the dry/new barnett clutch plates from the outside. Never install dry plates. Let them soak overnight in fresh oil......
@paulotex197 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the clarification. I watched in the wrong order, first the spanish video, then yours. Really glad to watch yours before trying anything. The spanish guy says the rivets were adapted into bolts by an expert, but it is not clear if the non-parallel sides were taken into account.
@phofmann19127 жыл бұрын
The only way to do this with bolts would be to drill the hole straight, and insert a sleve+bolt and weld the bolt and sleeve together so they cant seperate.......only problem is that there is not really enough meat left to drill a larger hole.

Hi Patrique, Any chance you would have some time to make/post a video on checking & adjusting valve clearance? The manual lists a few special tools to remove the head cover so would definitely appreciate you educating us on the do's & don'ts...

I already did a trial video, but my phone battery died halfway. And I am in the middle of moving house, so i don't have time to redo the video in the next few weeks...... but I will do one eventually.
@phofmann19127 жыл бұрын
But, in regards to special tools needed: There is 1 special tools needed if you are only "checking" the valve clearances. Its the radiator vacuum refill/bleed tool because you need to remove the radiator and then fill it again after checking the valve clearances. If you need to adjust the valve clearance, then you need 2 extra tools. Crankshaft locking pin (you can't do the job without it) 2 threaded studs that clamp down the camshaft holding bridge (to undo the bolts clamping down) These two studs can be manufactured at home by getting a piece of thread bar 18cm long, M12 x 1.25 (same thread as the spark plug). Weld a nut, approx. 10mm from the end to each piece of thread bar. This is to stop you from inserting the tool too deep into the cylinder head. 2 large washers and 2 more nuts will clamp down on the camshaft bridge (BMW calls it camshaft bearing cap) and then you can remove it and adjust/replace the valve "oil sinks".....(I call them valve caps). Be carefull when you remove the Valve cover. There is alot of dirt on the top side of the valve cover (sand and small stuff) that will fall into the camshaft/valve area. Make sure you clean everything before removing it.....
@christophemissinne39327 жыл бұрын
Got the bleed tool and probably will be able to make a hijack of the studs. Keeping my eye out on ebay for the locking tool and lets not forget the coil puller tool. Read a comment that the feeler gauges probably need to be the long/bent kind and the valve shims supposedly arent the typical flat disc- kind like ex.on my wifes RVF
@phofmann19127 жыл бұрын
The shim/caps are spherical.....Only BMW will sell you those. And the locking tool is really only needed when you have to remove and adjust the shims. The locking tool I think was less then 50 dollars from the dealer. I have spoken to alot of people and the chance of you needing to readjust the shims is fairly minimal. I have the locking tool because i also worked on the clutch, where its also needed.
@phofmann19127 жыл бұрын
And the coil puller is overrated..... I use bent longnose pliers. Because the plastic coil remover is too soft and can open.

Two great videos for any K1200 owner. I learned a lot! I have just bought a reconditioned clutch basket for my 2008 GT, from John Sykes in UK. He has replaced the springs but has not used rivets for the re-build. He has drilled and tapped the basket and has used machine screws with high strength Loctite. I don't want to have any risk of separation. What do you think?
@phofmann19127 жыл бұрын
Can't say if Johns work is good or not..... He seems to have been doing it for a while. I'd say he knows what he is doing. Loctite is a must in this application......and drilling and threading the basket will work too. I just don't wan't to say that its 100% guaranteed to work (longgevity wise). A rivet vs a bolt...... Now, all the shear load is put on the thread, and not on the shank, like when using a rivet. If i were to go that route, i'd drill and tap the basket and insert a HeliCoil to strengthen the thread in the basket. Because the basket is fairly soft Aluminium. Maybe thats a bit over the top and not needed, but thats the way i'd do it. But, don't worry..... Your basket will be fine. Run it for a couple of thousand miles and then pull it out and check the bolts. I would.....

Thank you for posting both videos. I really enjoyed learning about and seeing these components. I ride a 2008 K12S and I'm very interested in the K13 modifications you've done. The shift lever upgrade with PC quick shifter must be great. Perhaps you can help me understand this better... I asked a BMW rep. about installing a PC and he told me that the maps would be constantly rendered ineffective by the K's ECU as the bike 'learned' and compensated for the PC's input. It seems like this has not been your experience. Would you please make a detailed video about the PC on the K12S? Thank you again, these videos were great!
@phofmann19127 жыл бұрын
I'll be posting another video in the next few days, including the bikes electronics and PowerCommander. Stay tuned. But I'll give you an answer now, so you can trash talk your dealer....... The PC3/PC5 (yes, the PC5 will fit) injects an added percentage of fuel to what the bikes ECU is already injecting. He was correct about the bikes ECU learning, but only if the Oxygen sensor in the exhaust is still connected. Once the oxygen sensor is out of the equation, the bikes computer has no way to relearn what is injected "extra" to compensate/reduce. In a fuel map, some of the values in the Power Commander table go into negative (-20%). That is to remove fuel from what is originaly being injected by the bikes ECU. Just be carefull, if you live in California, the bike won't pass exhaust/smog emission standards (unless you plug the O2 sensor back in, and upload a O-Fuel map). Hope this answered your question....

@richfjr13007 жыл бұрын
you know on that chain tensioner, i had an oilhead from 2002 model year, and it had the same rattle, and of course bmw redesigned it later on, so no rattle at startup, but of course bmw wouldn't recall it, you had to buy it...and now i see the same thing a few years later....must be some type of revenue generation they're trying to get from people who keep the bike and don't want to buy the latest model. Obviously, you don't have to buy it, but that rattle sounds so awful at startup
@phofmann19127 жыл бұрын
The problem with the chain tensioner is that the spring inside will work for the first couple of years/10k-20k and then weaken. The new style chain tensioner is actually not new...... its the same thing with an added reservoir on top. When I pulled out the old one and compared it to the new one they were identical, except the spring was a bit weaker on the old one.
@danielhehir17 жыл бұрын
Hello again, I changed the CCT a few weeks ago. The new CCT didn't have a spring with it. They recommended to use the old spring. So I did. The noise is still there at idle. I'm trying to order the spring now but BMW didn't even have a part number on the parts blow up sheet. So I'm wondering now, is the the clutch or is it the CCT ? The bike flutters just a little bit at idle. This seems to point to the CCT. There is also a later update or "fix" if you will. There are some small shims you can order from BMW to put in under the spring. Maximum 3mm. Have you tried any of this?
@phofmann19127 жыл бұрын
Do not install the spring with the new tensioner. Only the reservoir and tensioner.....
@phofmann19127 жыл бұрын
When i wrote that the spring feels the same, i meant the internal spring of the plunger. Not that 10mm outer spring. Look at this photo. The lower one is the way you have to install it. WITHOUT THE TINY SPRING! Check that you havent destroyed the oring..... goo.gl/images/p4AqNU
@danielhehir17 жыл бұрын
The 10mm spring should not be installed? Doesn't the spring keep a little tension against the chain, especially if the bike has been standing for a few weeks?
