Some of the parts for my K40 mods have started to arrive, including everything I need to replace the crappy fumes extraction solution the K40 comes with, so let's take a look at what I am going to use for air & fume extraction.
Here is the download link for the STL for the air extraction adapter. You will need to print 2 of them, and glue them together...

This is my first Laser cutter, so I have no experience with setting one up, or using one, so this series of videos will be from a new user/novice perspective.

Off topic question, I got my k40 laser in about a week ago, ran test trials everything was "lasing" great and eventually ran into the belt popping off a few times, I over tightened the X axis belt tentioner and broke the belt OPPPS, now im having a major issue finding the correct replacement belt on amazon due to so many people stating incorrect pitch and size (do you by chance know the correct pitch and size) p.S. the x axis belt tentioner setup seems pretty jank, I plan on 3d printing a custom tentioner for the end.

I don't have my K40 anymore, so I can't tell you what the belt specs are, sorry.

Yeah, the exhaust I am using is way better than the rubbish that comes with the K40, but it's never enough to get rid of the horrible smells ;)

Hi James, I got my fan from a hydroponics place here in Melbourne. They should be easy enough to track down where ever you are located.

What you're looking for is called an "inline fan kit" the kind people install in bathrooms etc. should cost about $100 including the fan the ducting and the vents. Example www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=2199004067

Laser cutters are noisy.. air extraction, air assist pump, water cooling... lots of noise :-)

Do you think you could use this indoors in apartment with air filter?

100000% not.

If you're gonna set it up in an apartment, you need to first and foremost exhaust to the outside. If you can't do that, then there's no way you can run a laser cutter/engraver in an apartment. Any additional things you need, depends on your machine. I have a Sainsmart Genmitsu LE5040 arriving today and I only get a pair of protective glasses with it. No good, especially not as I already wear normal glasses and thus can't use them. So instead I need to grab some red, translucent acrylic and oneway mirror film and use that as protective glass against the laser. The laser is 445 nm diode and the red acrylic wont let light under 650 nm pass through. Orange could work too, but the tint makes all the difference and you need a spectrometer to measure the nm wavelength correctly. That's not easy or cheap to obtain, so going with red is a safer and cheaper option. Next I'll also need an air intake to the enclosure, as you can't suck smoke and air out from a vacuum. Going extra fancy would be to add smoke and temperature sensors and wire them to an Arduino or a Raspberry Pi and use speed controllable intake and exhaust fans to keep everything safe and sound. The first box will though be pretty rough and mobile, with no specialty stuff, except from a camera to record the engraving process. Exhaust will be a flexible tube to be placed outside whenever I use the laser. Final box is a permanent placement beneath an enlargened CNC mill and will be about 6 meters from the nearest wall exhaust. I luckily have air intakes in my windows that can be unscrewed, so I'll turn one of those into an exhaust to the outside, add pipes along the top of the wall towards this exhaust and add fans to help the smoke get out of the pipe and outside my apartment. This would also be your only option. Filter on the intake and exhaust pipeline with fans on the smoke system

The other problem with that fan is that the wires inside the cover are twisted together, not soldered or fixed with connectors. Absolutely shocking 'quality', or lack thereof!

With the rubbish fan that shipped with the unit? Yeah, pretty terrible. It was the firth thing to go with that blue tubing!

@@UnexpectedMaker Yup. If you open the back panel on the fan, you'll find all the wires are twisted together!
