Thank you @behindwoodsO2 for such awareness. I've heard that brake doesn't work well if the disk heats up. But didn't take it this serious and haven't realised it yet as I haven't driven much in hills. The hairpin bends don't look dangerous but actual danger is brake failure. Thanks to the core for the emphasis on using lower gear during downhill. Now I logically realised the necessity of using lower gears instead of applying brakes. Many believe on their driving skills so that they don't necessarily need to use lower gears during downhill. Though they're skilled drivers they need to understand the science behind the brake failure caused by heated up disks.

உள்ளபடியே நல்ல தரமான பயிற்சியெடுத்த , நன்றாக அடிப்படைகளை அறிந்து வாகனம் ஓட்ட பழகிய வாகன ஓட்டிகளுக்கு நல்ல சாலைதான் இது. இங்கு அதிகம் விபத்துக்களை ஏற்படுத்துவது அடிப்படை அறியாத கத்துகுட்டி வாகன ஓட்டிகளால்தான். இங்கு பிரேக்கை பயன்படுத்துவதை விட கியர் கொண்டு வாகனத்தை கட்டுப்படுத்துவதுதான் சரியானதாக இருக்கும்

I have drove 25000 km with my car. I have travelled to munnar , Kodaikanal and yercaud. But ooty was very challenging for me. The roads in ooty is designed for only jeeps and heavy vehicle. Your car will get more heat and while going , you have to go with second/third only. When you travel in second gear for long time , there will be so much heat. While coming down the hill , the gear speed will be close the fourth gear and it would automatically go beyond the third gear speed. There is also some fear of wild animals. Ooty is four to five times bigger than Kodaikanal or yercaud. Make sure to take a lot of stops while to going to ooty. Definitely not for beginners!!! The way to hill has two ways , one is to go by coonoor and while returning come by kothagiri. Have a safe journey

I have used this road in TATA Nano. Both ways up and down. Be confident, use lower gear mostly as it locks the engine and use brake wisely. Things to follow on ghat roads..Roll down the widows, switch of the music, give way to upcoming vehicles

Actually brakes shouldn't fail that easily...if it fails it is due to poor braking technique or maintenance...if you know how to use brakes properly in hill driving, it shouldn't fail...

In 2018 just a week after that ertiga accident, we were about to go in this particular road without any accident knowledge that too in December.. By god's grace we met police lady who told we should not take this route.. After coming to gudalur we got to know about accident that happened recently.. trust me till now I get chills thinking about what would have happen if we took that route.. am forever grateful for that lady.. and still can't get over ertiga accident.. which remains fresh in my memory

In 2016 December,I travelled on this route.After mudumalai, there is a diversion , this route to kalatti trough masinagudi is the shortest to Ooty , so I took this route to travel up and and down to ooty. How experienced you are, this road is very dangerous, if you take your eye of the road for a second you can get hit on the barricades or get crashed . Earlier,While travelling on this route, I wasn’t scared but now knowing about the accidents on this route, now I think of never taking this route again

True. Nilgiris district administration is quite strict in not allowing outside district drivers from driving downhill. The main issue is the car rental companies renting cars to inexperienced drivers (mainly from Bengaluru and Mysuru) and more danger is during long weekends. Another road, similar to this is, Namakkal to Kolli Hills with 72 hairpin bends - more risky than this! The distance between hairpin bends is very less and drivers are reckless compared to the Nilgiris drivers.

yes. I have rided kolli hills in bike. Very sloppy road. It was like our bike moving in stairs. I struggled a lot in that road to cross 70 hairpin bends. Lot of super bike riders were recklessly driving in that road 50-60kmph which is uncontrollable.

it is a good road except that you should not act stupid... I have been driving on this road from 1994 and up until 2016. My last visit in Oct, I had a local driver pick me up and have got the entire downhill journey captured. As long as you know how to drive a car up and down the mountains and have been doing it sensibly, it will never be a problem.

I have used this road maybe 20 to 30 times. My regular stop used to be in the tea shop near the checkpost. You should have patience and don't apply brake when you are going down and be in 1st or second gear only. I used to do this road in my bolero and Scorpio. Inexperienced drivers should not use this road.

I came through this way Yes it is true. We should go very slow (2nd gear ) 150cc bike will struggle to go up from down ( insane steep) at some portion of the road ( especially at the down for 5 -7 kms ) If car or bike not good in condition or no experience then avoid this path If your are experienced/sensible and vehicle in good condition then we can go slowly..(we should avoid to apply brake at steep road at high speed while going down) and (too slow or too much speed both will be problem- 25-30 km speed will be good where ever insane steep while going up)

நாங்கள் இரண்டு நாட்கள் முன்பு தான் அந்த பாதையில் பயணித்தேன் அந்த பாதை என்று தெரியாமல். முதுமலையில் இருந்து மசினகுடி வழியாக ஊட்டி சென்றேன். ஏறுவதற்கு மிகவும் கடினமாக இருந்தது. ஏறிய பிறகு தான் தெரிந்தது அது ஆபத்தான கல்லட்டி சாலை என தெரிந்தது. ஆனால் ஏறும் போது முதல் gear ல தான் செல்ல முடிந்தது.

I love this road, they won't let us down hill from thalakuntha but we can go up hill from Masanagudi. My ooty trip will be incomplete without this hill climb. Just be careful when driving, not suitable for rookie drivers. Drive slow, respect nature, respect wild life and you ll be fine.... Happy driving ✌

Sir the fault is not because of the roads but the drivers... Anyone who drives responsibly, obey all the sign boards kept on the roadsides would be able to cross it.... Almost every accidents caused here were due to the driver's negligence... Right from 2002, I have been using this road in bikes & cars, I never faced any issues with the road.... In fact this is one of the most scenic routes...
