O! Divine Mother! Skanda, Indra, Viṣṇu, etc after winning their war against demons, come to you with their head gears removed, but still wearing armours on their chests, ignoring the remains of food of Śiva, meant for Caṇḍikeśvara, directly go to you to have a portion of the betel leaves mixed with pure edible camphor in your mouth.
Sankaracharya describes a story in Saundarya Lahari. The daemon Taraka was killed. This story follows that. Ganesha is victorious in that war. Lord Subramanya and other devas arrive there. They went to Kailasa swiftly to talk about the victory as they did not want to delay this news any further. Taraka troubled everyone for a long time. So they wanted to approach Devi as fast as they could, to tell her that story. They wanted to tell her how they were victorious. When they reached Kailas, they removed their crowns but not their protective armors because they were in a hurry to leave. There is a tradition in Kailasa where Parameshwara consumes the naivedya (food offered as prasad). The topmost portion is for his closest devotee Sri Chandikeshwara Swami. The remaining is for Parvati Devi. But when the war got over, it was very late. As usual, Parameshwara sent his food. It seems like Chandikeshwara Swami did not consume that and kept it aside. Devi partook in naivedya. It was time for Thamboola Dharana (Chewing betel leaves). Subramanya Swami and the devas went near Devi. Devi happily listened to their narration of the war chronicles and blessed them. Since she had already eaten, Devi distributed betel leaves and nuts among them and blessed them. They had them. They happily accepted the betel leaves and all other ingredients. Chandikeshwar was ready to give them nirmalyam (the leftover prasad) but they did no go there. They did not visit Parameshwara because they had arrived there straight from war with bodies smeared with blood and meat. Shiva’s nirmalyam is very holy. Not only that, it is for Chandikeshwara. So they went to Devi so that they did not have to take the portion reserved for Chandikeshwara. Devi’s tamboola Prasad is great. Parameshwara’s prasad can rid one of sins committed knowingly or unknowingly. We can rid of our sins by chanting names of Shiva knowingly or unknowingly.
sakṛt prasaṅgād agham āśu hanti tat
Srimad Bhagavatam 4.4.14
A king once ordered, “bring him (ahara), beat him (prahara), kill him (samhara)!” But unknowingly, he said Hara (name of the Lord) thrice while saying that. It was said that, the King became very prosperous. Here, devas partook in Devi’s Prasad without even partaking Shiva’s Prasad. This means that tamboolam is that great. Karpoora vitika is that great. They chewed the whole tamboolam and came away happily. Saundarya Lahari presents this in a story form.
karpūra vīṭikāmoda samākarṣa digantarā
[who is enjoying a camphor laden betel roll, the fragrance of which is attracting people from all directions.]
Everyone get attracted to Devi’s whole tamboolam and perfume. Mookakavi (dumb poet) consumed Devi’s tamboolam and later became the head of Shankara Math. Kalidasa was transformed to a noble poet. Kalamegha, a poet from Tamil Nadu, consumed Devi’s tamboolam and became a scholarly poet. Tamboolam has the power to change the dumb into great scholars and poets. It has the power to bestow power of Vak or knowledge.
nija sallāpa mādhurya vinirbhartsita kacchapi
[who excels even the veena of Sarasvati in the sweetness of Her speech.]
This is the twenty seventh mantra in Lalita Sahasranama. The meaning is: sweetness of an ordinary conversation of Devi is limitless. It defeats the sound of Kachapi Veena. Saundarya Lahari describes this in a story form.
vipañchyā gāyantī vividhamapadānaṃ paśupatēḥ
tvayārabdhē vaktuṃ chalitaśirasā sādhuvachanē ।
tadīyairmādhuryairapalapitatantrīkalaravāṃ
nijāṃ vīṇāṃ vāṇī nichulayati chōlēna nibhṛtam ॥
Saundarya Lahari 66
Goddess Sarasvatī plays on her vīṇā (an Indian classical instrument with strings, known as Indian lute) various glories of Śiva. While listening to this pleasing musical melody, You nod Your head in approval (approving the glories of Śiva) and begin to appreciate by saying (such as good, very good, excellent, etc). On hearing Your melodious voice, Sarasvatī was highly embarrassed, as Your sweet voice ridicules her vīṇā as well as her singing. Feeling ashamed, she quietly puts back the cover for her vīṇā.
This is narrated as a story unfolding in Devi’s durbar (assembly).
We are listening to the part Keshadipada varnana of Lalita Sahasranama or description of Devi from head to toe. In talks about each part of Devi and the principles it represents. We can hear more in the coming days.
To be continued…
