Tuitui Malamalama is a new collaborative podcast series presented by Kawaihuelani, Department of Hawaiian Language at Hawaiʻinuiākea, Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) and Kanaeokana, the network of kula Hawaiʻi.Tuitui Malamalama is focused on capturing the range of human experiences as expressed through the eyes and language of the people of Niihau.
The podcasts are led by its host, Dr. Ipolani Wong, Associate Professor at Kawaihuelani.In the inaugural series, she sits with her sister, Pualei Kaohelauli, a social worker for the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Health on the island of Kauaʻi. Subscribers to the podcast will enjoy their authentic conversations in olelo Niihau and are encouraged to glean insights into language use, communication dynamics, and cultural knowledge of poe Niihau.
The content of the Tuitui Malamalama Podcast can be used by educators and other professionals as a way to learn and understand the lifestyle, culture, and knowledge systems of poe olelo Niihau. Spelling conventions for all textual elements of Tuitui Malamalama Podcasts follow olelo Niihau traditions.
Series 1- Introductions & Social-Emotional Learning
The inaugural series of Tuitui Malamalama weaves together five short stories shared by Ipo and Pualei along with studio guests Makana Garma and Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu. The range of human experiences are discussed in these five podcasts that touch upon the social-emotional aspects of life on Niihau covering such topics as spirituality, child rearing, grief and loss, celebration, and caring for elders.

❤❤ This how I heard Olelo Hawaii was spoken by my Mom’s parents, sad part was they spoke softly and they did not teach their children like my Mom and her 7 siblings. Luckily my Kuku taught me the way he was naturally born with speaking Ōlelo Hawaii while growing up in Lahaina. He taught me bc my Tutu wahine had died and he lived with our family and I took the time to keep him occupied and busy until he died @71. In 2 yrs I’ll be 70.
