Ka Uluwehi o Ke Kai (The Plants of the Sea) is a beloved hula standard composed by Kumu Hula Edith Kanaka‘ole. The mele speaks of working in the hot sun to gather favorite foods that grow in the ocean.
Auntie Edith (1913-1978) was a chanter, teacher, and a kumu hula. An indigenous Hawaiian woman, she is recognized by indigenous Hawaiians, the people of Hawaiʻi and the State of Hawaiʻi as one of the preeminent practitioners of modern Hawaiian culture and language. Her legacy includes, among many other achievements, Hālau Kekuhi, the internationally acclaimed hālau hula. The Edith Kanakaʻole Multi-Purpose Stadium, home of the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, is named after her. Auntie is truly cherished throughout the islands!
It is our honor to present this mele, sung by Pomaika`i Lyman.
Smell the fragrance, see the colors of various seaweeds! Līpoa, limu kohu, pahe‘e and lipalu. Savor the joy of this hula. Mahalo!
