My Great-great Grandfather's name was Robert Napunako Boyd. This song was written for him by Queen Liliuokalani about the feelings she had for him, as she left his home in Mauna Wili Valley. He was a sea Captain that became very important to Kamehameha, was the first Harbor Master in Hawaii, and the first King's Admiral for his fleet. The King gave my GGGF the land, and he turned it into a large farm, producing many essential produce for the Honolulu Market in the mid-1800s. The Queen and my GGGF had a love "interest", but after several weeks at his farm estate, she sadly was made to return to the palace in Honolulu because of her duties. She penned this song of love because of her sadness/love relating to leaving him. When it was first presented it was a very lovely tribute. But now, it is thrown around like a popular pineapple-eating-grass-skirt-wearing-tourist song completely lacking the intention or reason why the song was written. You are mistaken, this IS NOT the song the Queen wrote as she shed her tears for her people as she was put under ARREST BY THE ILLEGAL coup by the United States!!! Please read the real history of the stealing of Hawaii lands, and how The Kingdom Of Hawaii still exist, and was recognized this century by the World courts, the U.N. and the Hague. Thank you.

I have been listening to this song all day as I pray for the people of Maui. I cannot imagine the loss they are feeling right now. The devastation of the fires is unreal. They say it is raining in Maui today. Perhaps it is the tears of Queen Liliuokalani for her people. They are praying the rain will clear the mountain range & reach Lahainah 🌧️ 💔 🌸

"Queen Lili‘uokalani (1838-1917), born in Honolulu and the daughter of a high chief and chieftess, was the first sovereign queen, and the last monarch of Hawai‘i. Lili‘uokalani dedicated much of her reign to restoring native Hawaiian rights, but a group of American plantation and business owners, backed by the U.S. military, staged a coup to overthrow her in 1893."

@@Lucifer-cc8qx They're over exaggerating. Every song she has written, were danced to with hula. So therefore, they shouldn't be so hesitant to connect with her sorrow. The song was originally written when Queen Liliu'okalani saw two lovers said goodbyes before they depart. This is before she transcribed later now referenced to her overthrow. Even if it's about her, why else she shared this song with her people? To sympathize a lover, losing something she hold dear to her heart. Idk about you guys, but that scene with Lilo and Nani, portrays very well with this song.
