Tanmay Tikekar - Not to mention that we have far better textual evidence of the reality of Santa Claus than we do of Jesus because we not only have the written account, it isn't anonymous. We have the original monograph and we know the author.Santa is described as "jolly" and "merry". When he laughs, his belly actually shakes. He doesn't rape children; he gives them toys. He doesn't order the slaughter of people whose land he wants to steal; he and Mrs. Claus sit in front of the fire and chat. He doesn't tell people they must HATE their mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers; he's all about good will. He doesn't destroy all the innocent animals on earth; he takes good care of his reindeer, even those with glowing, red noses. He doesn't have a gang of smelly fishermen with whom he wanders around, doing nothing of value; he gives gainful employment to an army of elves whose work brings joy to children, everywhere.And, when he, sadly, must punish a naughty child, he doesn't beat him with a rod or stone him to death or burn him for eternity; he leaves coal in the kid's stocking and gives him a chance to improve the following year. Yeppers, Santa is MUCH better than the Christian god.I should apologize to Santa for the comparison.

William Lane Craig's historical standards are such that the resurrection passes with flying colours? Wow, that's really surprising, Tommy. It's almost like Craig designed his standards with the resurrection in mind or something. Craig is not an honest historian, he's a dishonest "professional philosopher" who says that the universe must have a cause, therefore Jesus.
@scotzbhoy9 жыл бұрын
Not once has Craig ever claimed that 'the universe required a cause, therefore Jesus'.
@puckerings9 жыл бұрын
scotzbhoy I'm paraphrasing. His beloved cosmological argument is at best an argument for a deist god, and yet he's specifically Christian. It's a big leap that all apologists make, since all of their arguments can apply equally well to some other conception of a god as well.
@scotzbhoy9 жыл бұрын
Yes, but he makes no such leap. The Cosmological argument could only prove a deist God, but Craig has never denied this. His arguing for the resurrection of Jesus is completely separate from his arguing for a creator of the universe.
@puckerings9 жыл бұрын
scotzbhoy I consider his using even-more-logically-invalid arguments to get from one place to the other to be the leap.
@scotzbhoy9 жыл бұрын
Have you even watched any of WLC's stuff? There's no link between the two. He argues, primarily but not exclusively through the Cosmological argument, for a creator of the universe. He also argues, using historical methodology, for the resurrection of Jesus. There is no link between the two lines of argument, no 'leap' is made to get from one to the other because he doesn't attempt to make one follow from the other.

I completely agree. I could listen to Dr. Craig talk for a long time, compared to hearing Kabane for 5 minutes and finding his mere voice grating and irritating. Also, as Buck points out - Craig is actually a legitimately intellectual and philosophical thinker (in general). Now, we may disagree on some of his conclusions (Kalam, etc) - but the fact he's actually a generally amiable personality (compared to - as Buck notes - people like Ham or the detestable Sye Ten), gives him a level of respectability (as a person) that I would be less willing to extend to many others on the Theistic side.

I don't know what Tommy doesn't get. Textual evidence alone is not sufficient as a historical source; you have to be able to correlate it with other sources. That's why an unsigned, undated luftwaffe pilot's letter is not very useful or reliable compared to an official, signed and dated document. The Bible is an even WORSE document than that. Not only is it anonymous and with no original copies, but it also makes a great number of claims about supernatural events which we know do not happen, and do not correlate with sources other than within its pages (excluding paul's letters, but considering he is evidently a charlatan, even those can be questioned). Any historian worth their salt would dismiss its contents much as they dismiss the mythologies we can find about the greek or roman gods. And they have waaay more evidence than the bible does, considering they have paintings, tapestries, statues, writings, and dedicated temples.
@BollocksUtwat9 жыл бұрын
Damian Freeman Tommy probably hasn't been in a proper medieval history class. If you go learn about the say Franks you spend a lot of time analyzing historical documents produced throughout various periods and the entire time the prof is going over how contradictory some things are, talking about how unreliable things are and contrasting the changes made in accounts from one period to another. The entire exercise of analyzing historical documents is not about taking it at face value, its in fact a very deep examination of things like motive, bias, credibility, and so on. Historians therefore piece together the events and decide what seems plausible and not plausible. Its not just a case of taking what one court historian said at face value even if he was alive during the period, which many were not. You can't even get the names of the people who wrote the documents that support the conclusions of history on the wikipedia pages. People that think they understand how determining history works fundamentally underestimate things.

It goes from simple to complex in a gentle slope of time over millions of years. No sentient force was needed to "put apples and fruits for us to eat" because as complex life evolved it needed more energy to survive and reproduce, so the most advantageous solution is to be able to consume that which naturally occurs.

Depends on what you call 'recent' (and whether you count recent historians writing about ancient mythological characters, or if the character has to be recent, too), and if you would include mythologized versions of real people, like 'Chopped down a cherry tree' George Washington, 'The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere' Paul Revere, and 'Didn't own slaves' Thomas Jefferson. It also depends on if you count creatures like Bigfoot and Nessie as 'people'. Molly Pitcher is the perfect example, though.

@Bailey828282 it is right there fixed in print. Order of creation is specifically laid out using words like "and" and "then", and the order changes from account to account. One thing is memorization from the point of view of rabbis, but that only presums that the information got to the rabbis in perfect shape from the original witnesses. It has being proven that different persons observing the same occurrances give different testimonies about what happened so is not difficult to see how the original events were changed before they got to be considered as teachings for the rabbis. Susceptibility of error is very easily observed if you think on all the factors.

As an historian all I can say is the historicity of past events is established through corroboration across multiple and, ideally, independent sources. For example, we can be confident that Socrates existed, because not only did Plato write about him but so did Xenophon and Aristophanes. With Jesus' "miracles," the only source we have are the Gospels, which conflict in many particulars. If there were other independent accounts of said miracles, e.g. by Jewish scholars, that would be something.

It would not matter if the account of the miracle was written down a second after the event by an eye witness. Such an account would not be evidence that a miracle occurred. Ask yourself the question, "Is it more likely that the laws of nature were suspended, or that the witness was under some misapprehension?" And the more hearsay you add in, the more conviction you must add to the question.

Y'know, considering everything the christian guy said (and I a devout agnostic and who completely and 100% agrees with Matt), I admit that he knows how to argue and that it seemed that at points, it even seemed apparent that Matt had to think before being able to react at times. All I'm saying is that for a christian, this tommy guy actually knows his own side and how to argue unlike the majority of christians. I find that amazing.

I can't answer for him, but I imagine he would answer something like: If a strange natural disaster occurred, it could be found in multiple places and not a single newspaper clipping. It would have had several witnesses and been written about in multiple places.

He asked earlier what contradictory claims would he believe in and arrogantly accused Matt of not being to provide an example, well what about believing in evolution and the Big Bang, which are explicitly contradictory to the claims in the Bible, which he purports to believe. He has also demonstrated that in fact he does find scientific evidence more valid than text if he believes the scientific conclusions over theological claims, even if he won't admit it

@bvsandman You show what you think is evidence, it just doesn't live up to scrutiny. The dead sea scrolls you mention, are vague. In some places they just mention a number without clarifying whether it means days/months/years and so on. If you look into the interpretations you'll see each religion believes it satisfies their own prophecies, which happened on completely different dates!

the difference is frame of reference. the caveman and me come from different experiences and times. you are right, the extraordinary for him is ordinary for me. your analogy is lacking in that it fails to take into account that atheists and theists exist in the same frame of reference, where miracles ARE extraordinary (admittedly by both sides) and therefore require extraordinary evidence.

@Bailey828282 First of all, the video that you are watching now on the KZbin channel "FFreeThinker" was NOT put up by Matt Dillahunty. The Atheist Community of Austin, which is responsible for the creation of the Atheist Experience show, does NOT have a KZbin channel. Every clip of the show is posted to KZbin by fans of the show, and are edited probably because of length. You can go to the ACA's website to see ALL the shows. 2ndly, Matt clearly won this debate. @Bailey828282 The earth was a molten planet, with massive amounts of burning hydrogen and oxygen on its surface, which is why we now have oceans, and an oxygen rich atmosphere. As oceans formed the conditions were primed to originate life, this occurred (how life originated is unknown at this time, but that doesn't mean it requires a supernatural explanation), and natural selection began its work. The organisms most fit to survive lived on, and as they moved into different environments,

I have to say out of all the videos I've seen for AE, this guy is the best Theistic defender. Obviously, he's wrong (haha) but he made some really excellent remarks and I acknowledge his intelligence...especially when he said he whole-heartedly accepted Evolution and Big Bang...if only all theists were half as intelligent as him, these debates would be as interesting as this one.

He's a good debater. He doesn't say that directly, but what he does say is structured so that it sounds that way if you don't listen very carefully. That way, most people who hear it will take it the way he wants them to take it, but when called on it, he can say he didn't actually say that. What he actually said was that Wright and Evans use the standards of respected mainstream historians to conclude that the Jesus miracles happened, not that they themselves are mainstream historians.

Santa was based off St Nick, they were not the same person. Another good example of that would be St Patrick, was he real? That's up for debate, but there are plenty of story books that tell of what he did.
