I love and adore this knife. Its light enough I can justify it on backpacking trips, it cleans game and fish nicely, food prep is a breeze, it processes fire wood and fiber (up to where I would actualy want an axe, which is what I need in a knife to do), it pairs amazingly with a silky or bacho at well under 1lb. Although, I filed 1" to a 90 degree on the spine next to the scales. Its wasn't designed for ferro rods, but works great after that. Its ultra utilitarian and replaced any other knife I had

I love this knife! Would love to have one to gift to my dad. (I got mine a few weeks ago.) FWIW $2.00 in 1906 would represent just over $55 today...then again, the original wasn't 1095CroVan steel, backed by Becker K&T/Ka-Bar and the scales were pinned not easily adjustable/changeable.

I love mine, and use it constantly. I'm glad I picked one up early on. I paid $106. They are much more expensive these days. This and the Mark 1 are two of my favorites. I stripped the coating off the Mark 1. Now it looks like an old school hunting knife. The 1095 CroVan is a dream to sharpen, and it performs beautifully.

Mine came shaving sharp and was quickly put to use. For those of us who have an appreciation of history and historic pieces, this is well worth it. While it isn't the steel of a Bark River, it is more authentic and is the closest replica that's out there. Pick it up and you go back to Horace's camp, without the whisky, but that can be fixed, also. Good review.
@dwightehowell81792 ай бұрын
Kephart used it to process fish and game of all sorts and sizes as well as vegetables. Processed food and ferro rods weren't a thing yet. He would have used matches or maybe a zippo. Have fun and may God bless and keep you.

Look at all that snow,thanks for the fun review,good to see you out together,now run along,it must be cold there. I live on the edge of a desert, but would love to win and put good use to that knife, in my work I would keep it on my belt for at least 50% of time. And camping with the kids,classic knife. Have a great weekend to all.
@ROE13002 жыл бұрын
👍 Interestingly, as I understand it Mr. Kephart created this knife to be an all-around woodsman’s knife (hunting, fishing, food prep, camp chores), but most reviews I see people demonstrate this knife doing tasks Mr. Kephart would probably used his hatchet for. Although the Junkyard Fox channel did show it being used to clean fish. We need more videos showing this knife field dressing small game (or, big game), cleaning fish, and food prep. But having said that, good view of this excellent historically correct knife.

$2 in 1904 (when the knife first came out) is $56.46 in 2019 dollars. Looks like the cost of materials (or desire for profit margins) have escalated beyond the inflation rate. Thanks for the video. Love the history behind the knife.

1095 CroVan is a very under rated steel . Those small percents of Chromium, Molybdenum, Vanadium (Carbide formers and grain structure refiners) and Nickel(toughness and corrosion boost) give it an easily noticeable improvement in attainable sharpness and edge holding over plain1095

Good to see you and Will out getting some quality knife time. I'm glad to see SMKW as a sponsor. While I do try to stay informed about newer knife offerings (especially makers of quality, reputation, design, and honorable warranty)... here in Alaska this stuff does not grow out of the tundra or easy to hold in hand in local stores. This is one of the big reasons I am subscribed to PM101. I like how Will expressed some of the lineage of the Kephart essentially being modified from available butcher/skinner/kitchen knives of the era and as an all arounder field carry. Will realistically did not praise it or hype it up as something that is the latest/greatest or a selection ideal based on what's available nowadays. The BK line from KABAR is dependable quality... I'm certain this could make an awesome peanut butter and jelly on toasted buttered Sourdough ;-) in the middle of wilderness winter!!!
