Dr, Sledge is a very skilled speaker in this segment and clearly has deep knowledge on his topical studies. I am impressed how quickly he accesses what he has learned with such a quick mind; like Jimmy, he's exceptionally good at shifting focus to little interesting anecdotes and seeing connections to information and conventions. This is why I love this show, the non-emotional approach to learning.

As A Catholic man who sees a a lot of evil in the world it is refreshing to listen to Dr. Sledge, who is both straightforward and honest is his statements. And when he says he is willing to learn from his Catholic, Christian and Muslim brothers and sisters, it gives me hope.

Very interesting. The only things that I really knew about Jewish belief was from studying Moses Maimonides while getting my BPhil. So, I appreciate Dr. Sledge doing the interview, he really explained it very well, I think, and I think that it was good getting a Jewish scholar to explain different Jewish beliefs.

Thank you both for your candor around 28:30. The fact is, as Jimmy said, that our ancestors didn't "play" well together, and the minority always suffers worse. We need to acknowledge it, forgive, and at least agree that God wants us to be loving toward one another. I am a Catholic, and believe in Extra ecclesia nulla salus, but I feel that a militant approach, or religious bigotry, is repugnant, as the good Dr Sledge said. We're at an age that we need to come together, not in some fake charity of "you're ok, and I'm ok" but the common ground is still very important. May Jesus see us through it.

Very interesting stuff to learn about. Thank you. I have a practical question on the reincarnation question. If you reincarnated as a river, how would you a good river to reincarnate to a higher inanimate object or animal and go up the hierarchy, or in other words, how would you avoid being a bad river? Although my question might seem disrespectful, I am honestly curious what the answer would be according to those who teach these subjects.

Awesome. Please make one about alchemy. If possible, try to invite the guest again since he also seems to have studied the subject substantially. It would be interesting to learn if philosopher's stone realy existed and if someone suceeded on making one and turning a poor metal into gold. According to google, it's only possible to transform an element into another using a particle accelerator. So the alchemy tradition was a hoax based upon a legend and no one really succeeded on this task? If that's true, it's just sad. It's kinda hard to believe though, why would they spend so much time and even their lives upon the hope of turning lead into gold? Endless ambition? Or just the fascinating possibility of perfectioning natural elements into nobler ones artificially? I suppose they were backing up the theoretical knowledge with the practical, experimental, empyrical knowledge. Maybe all this talk was not actually literal, but a metaphor to the process of sanctification or deification?

Every thing that isn’t Christian is anti Christian, but most modern cults and secret societies come from the enlightenment era. For example Freemason, rabbinic Judaism, modern Islam(Ottoman Empire), Mormonism, Protestantism, they all essentially believe that god’s true intentions towards us were lost but that they now have REFOUND the answer to understanding god and his will.

I think that at the end of a Poul Anderson story (might be 1963’s “The Three-cornered Wheel”) one of the heroes introduces an alien civilization to Kabbalah, hoping it will result in a more-benevolent or at least less-troublesome religious system on their planet…

So, kind of a random thought on the ending thoughts, but wouldn't the resurrection of the dead technically be reincarnation? Not in the sense that most people use the term, but after we die we will be spirits for a season that will then get our bodies back at the resurrection. If I understand the word right, one could say we incarnate (take on flesh) again at the resurrection, or rather, reincarnate. Am I wrong? I find this mildly amusing if I'm technically right.
@StoaoftheSouth
@StoaoftheSouth Жыл бұрын
I think I get what you're trying to say but I think the way you're saying it is going to be really confusing. I would say that the post-mortem existence of the soul apart from the body is unnatural to humans, so the resurrection of the dead is a restoration of how things are meant to be. That involves us living in our bodies again as we are supposed to. So yes, our souls will return to the flesh (incarnate.) But I wouldn't use the language of reincarnation, because that word typically assumes a worldview in which there are preexisting souls which move from body to body after death. This is different from the Christian resurrection because it is the same body that will stand up again.
@JudeMichaelPeterson
@JudeMichaelPeterson Жыл бұрын
@@StoaoftheSouth oh, I certainly agree it would be a scandalous word to start using in place of the resurrection. Just like faith alone can technically be true if it's mean how the Joint Declaration defines it, but how it's still not a term we should throw around as Catholics. It was more just a random thought that I found to be funny and which might serve as the substance of a joke in a future conversation.
@nicholassoen3708
@nicholassoen3708 Жыл бұрын
Hmmm I do not believe it is the same. Doesn't the reincarnation idea also entails the possibility of a higher lifeform (for example, human) to be reincarnated as lower lifeforms such as plants or animals? And it is also said that one won't have any memories of past lives either, even if one is reincarnated as a human again. Those two points alone are already incompatible to what Catholic believe as the ressurection of the dead.
@JudeMichaelPeterson
@JudeMichaelPeterson Жыл бұрын
@@nicholassoen3708 you are thinking in terms of how the word is commonly used, I'm talking about what the word literally means, which is to be "carnated" once again. My point requires divorcing the word itself from the philosophy/religion that is often attached to it. That being said, our resurrected bodies will be better than our current ones.
