Fun Fact: The Average SEAL had 7-10 Tridents on their casket usually put there by the ones closest to them usually their Teammates and other seals. Chris Kyle had 160 Tridents on his casket, more than any other SEAL a true testament to his character and the amount of lives he impacted.

My nephew who was a sniper in the marines served in Falluja , and met Chris. Being a native Texan they hit it off. He just lived in the next town over. If that’s not crazy enough, I played in a band in the 90’s and the guitarist nephew was little Eddie the guy who shot and killed Chris, and Chad. He was a little off when he was a little kid… it’s a small world.

He recognized the guy with the sore elbow because he also has this. In one of the scenes in the beginning before they got married, lying in bed you can see Chris' elbow also bruised, perhaps a sign that they are always in prone position as a sniper

When this first came out, I went with a friend to see it in a fully packed theater. We got a huge popcorn, put it between us, and settled in as the lights went down. At the end of the movie, the lights came up. Everyone was quiet, in stunned silence. He and I looked at each other, like "What the hell was that!?" We looked at the popcorn. Our hands were in the popcorn, which had been barely touched. We were so into the movie, we basically froze. It was the most intense movie experience I've ever had.

That funeral procession you see at the end was the actual event. The funeral service was at (Dallas) Cowboy Stadium (which was packed) but his burial was in Austin. If you look at a map you will see that that is a very long distance. I have heard that the highway and overpasses were completely lined with mourners the entire length of that trip.

I never watched this movie because I knew the end. So heartbreaking. An answer to your question, enlistment is based on time. Guys will sign up for 2-8 years then either be done or re-enlist. I had 2 exes in the Navy & another was an Army Ranger sniper. Unfortunately, a few times I had to hide the guns.

I watched this movie once, ONCE! I can't watch it on my own, but I'm glad for your review. Many, many of our veterans... not just Americans, are in pain. Some (damned few) get the help they need. I can't tell you how many of my younger "brothers and sisters" I've had to talk down. If you are in pain and in trouble, go to your local pub or bar, there's bound to be a vet there. Talk. Converse. Keep talking.

19:30 The significance of that sore red elbow is just like Chris Kyle Navy SEALS snipers can spend all day and all night nonstop for days lying face down with their elbows on the ground propping up their sniper rifle looking for targets to kill and not moving an inch to prevent giving away their position to the enemy. Snipers are so well trained and disciplined that if they have to pee they will piss their pants right then and there. And they will lay there in there own piss until the are relieved by another sniper even if its for days and days. Spending any amount of time in that position your elbows will get sore and it will only get worse the longer anyone remains in that position. American soldiers are equipped with knee and elbow pads to prevent injuries. This guys elbow is so red and messed up that there is no activity a innocent civilian or a non combatant could do for such a long period of time that would produce this kind of injury. That red elbow was a clear sign that this guy is not who he says he is.

As a veteran who was active many years before the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts/wars, those who were deployed and then rotated back either by unit or individually had something like "deployment guilt." From talking to those who did multiple tours, they would come home, visit family and friends, but the chaos of silence, their PTSD, difficulty trying to matriculate back into society and even strong patriotism made them feel guilty that they were home while their buddies were deployed. While some would say, "f*** that place"......others would volunteer for another deployment, they had that much guilt! Many veterans say, "It's about the guy next to you...." I believe Chris felt this way and his wife did too, but I think she was at her breaking point of raising a family alone and the difficulties of being married into military life! Great reaction.......

Kabir, the United States has a military maximum security prison located at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Also in the area is a smaller military prison for shorter sentences and lesser crimes, and a civilian maximum security penitentiary. If one of the snipers in war shot a non-combatant because he thought they might be carrying a bomb and it turned out that the non-combatant was innocent, then the sniper might be tried, convicted, and sent to the military maximum security prison.

You shouldn't look too deeply into Chris being what could be perceived as callous, when referring to his friend who died. 1- because he was right. (In a logical perspective) 2- because to live the life of a warrior is that, the life of a warrior. (You have to be able to justify within your mind as to why someone died on the battlefield. Whether it is through religion, cold logic, bad luck, a bit of all three, etc. If you don't it will eat you alive.) 3- to continue to survive as a warrior. (Because he plans to continue to live the life of a warrior, and if he doesn't wish to fail himself, his family, or his brothers in arms, we will have to deal with #1 & #2 to do so...) So when referring to people in such positions in life one must remember to be open-minded to the person's perspective, both for why they do something, and act or think a certain way... Ps To anyone who reads this... Unless you are prepared to live the life of a military spouse, as your marital vows shall surely read; "through good times and bad, through sickness and in health, till death do you part..." Do not waste your time, or even consider wasting the time and life of the soldier who is sacrificing their life for your country, and therefore you. They deserve far better than that, just as you deserve better... If you are not planning to live that life or sacrificing your comforts & wants to support them, they are not for you... "I'd like to thank any and all military personnel for their service, and any and all sacrifices regardless of how small or large they have made to give us the powerful military we now have as the United States of America, both to protect us, our allies, and to provide a safe haven for those who share the dream of freedom. Thank you."

The movie could not end any other way because he did die that way in real life. Even Hollywood could not change that.... From Wikipedia: 'It is based on the memoir American Sniper (2012) by Chris Kyle, with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice. The film follows the life of Kyle, who became the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history with 255 kills from four tours in the Iraq War, 160 of which were officially confirmed by the Department of Defense... ...Years later, on February 2, 2013, Kyle says goodbye to his wife and family as he leaves in good spirits to spend time with Eddie Ray Routh, a veteran suffering from PTSD at a shooting range. An on-screen subtitle reveals that Kyle was killed that day by Routh, followed by archive footage of crowds standing along the highway for his funeral procession. More are shown attending his memorial service.'

War is hell and those of us who do not experience it on a daily basis fail to feel the impact of it on the inhabitants and participants... Yeah, typically you sign up for a certain number of years when you join, normally 4 years. Contracts get a little weird with special forces and pilots because the training is so expensive and last over a year, so the military wants a return on investment. I don't know how SEALs contracts work, but I would assume you would get about 2-4 deployments on your contract. Of course, if your head starts getting fucked up or your body starts breaking, you would be able to get medically discharged. As for what I think about his family life. I served 20 years and was able to make it work, but I married a wonderful woman. Every family is different, but you have to understand that. If your wife or kids can't take it anymore, you need to get out of it and that in itself is a hard thing to do. You do have options, you can go to reserve duty and half a home life or you can just get your contract over with and get out.

Just so you know things have come out now that call some of the events depicted in his book/movie into question. The two that come to mind are his supposed bar fight with Jessie Ventura. According to multiple people that never happened to the point Jessie sued Kyle at the time for defamation and if I recall correctly won. That and his claim he was on the roof of the superdome during Katrina shooting looters. Not taking away from what that man did for our country. He deserves every bit of respect for that. Only saying he had a tendency to lean into or bend the truth in places to make things more dramatic.

23:12 The minimum for all branches of the US military is 5 years. The average time for a deployment is 9 months. If ordered to be deployed US soldiers have no say in the matter. If a soldier disobeys an order they will be charged with DISOBEYING A DIRECT ORDER. Unfortunately I don't recall what the punishment would be for that. If a US soldier decides to leave the military before their 5 year contract has been fulfilled they will eventually be found and charged with desertion. And the punishment for desertion during a time of war is DEATH.

When you sign a contract, its typically 2-6 years. You can do as many tours as the DoD wants you to do in that time. There is not specific amount. A lot of things come into play, such as wartime or peacetime. We're at peacetime now that we are pulled out from Afghanistan. Typically, every normal unit deploys every 18 months on average ideally. For about 9 months. But Navy Seals, SF, Rangers and the other SOF can do several rapid deployments or tours.
@28dirtj
@28dirtj Жыл бұрын
You can also re-enlist, people will stay in for 20+ years. You only need 20 years in the U.S. armed forces to retire. So you can retire at 37 or 38 if you wanted. Also, the 1st contract you sign is actually 8 years, but its usually split. 4 years would be active duty, the other 4 would be Individual ready reserve, basically a civilian again but can be recalled if troop losses were devastating and needed people badly. You can also do National gaurd or reserves, which are part time essentially. They also deploy and you can volunteer for deployments

Another great movie about a real life sniper is Enemy at the Gate (or Gates) about Vasily Zaytsev. It's easy nowadays to just see the bad side of Russia, but they have a great history of snipers, including Roza Shanina, who wrote in her journal about wanting to go home and start a family but who died while shielding an injured officer -- and she was 18 at the time and already had over 50 kills.

In tribute to Chris Kyle countless American citizens lined up for 200 miles next to the highway, bridges, and overpasses for hours in the pouring rain out of respect and appreciation for his sacrifices he had made in defense of this great country of ours. On February 2, 2013, Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield, 35, were shot and killed by Eddie Ray Routh at the Rough Creek Ranch-Lodge-Resort shooting range in Erath County, Texas. Both Kyle and Littlefield were armed with .45-caliber 1911-style pistols when they were killed, but neither gun had been unholstered or fired, and the safety catches were still on. Kyle was killed with a .45-caliber pistol, while Littlefield was shot with a 9 mm SIG Sauer pistol. Both guns belonged to Kyle. Routh was a 25-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Lancaster, Texas. Kyle and Littlefield had reportedly taken Routh to the gun range in an effort to help him with his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Routh had been in and out of mental hospitals for at least two years and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. His family also said he had PTSD from his time in the military. On the way to the shooting range, Kyle texted Littlefield, "This dude is straight-up nuts." Littlefield responded, "Watch my six", military slang meaning "watch my back". Four months later, while he was in his jail cell, Routh shared with former Erath County Sheriff's Deputy Gene Cole: "I was just riding in the back seat of the truck, and nobody would talk to me. They were just taking me to the range, so I shot them. I feel bad about it, but they wouldn't talk to me. I'm sure they've forgiven me." A memorial service was held for Kyle at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on February 11, 2013 7,000 people attended the service. Chief Petty Officer Christopher Scott Kyle April 8, 1974 - February 2, 2013 The most prolific sniper in US military history he has no equal. 330 kills 160 confirmed kills by the US Navy.

As a clinical social worker, I was employed by the Naval Hospital at camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In particular I worked with Marines and Navy corpsman, returning from their deployment in Afghanistan and Iraq. Marines can deploy usually 6 mos on and 6 months off as many times as the corp wants them to, it was not unusual just to work with the Marines that have been on their third and fourth for deployment.

I understand that snipers are a necessary evil, as long as there is war. I’m grateful for their service. When their warring days are long past, I wonder how they reconcile their past services with their spiritual belief systems. I don’t think many of us could live with ourselves after intentionally killing someone who never saw us--no matter how horrible our victim(s) were. God Bless Them

Another movie that just makes me angry mainly because those two movies are about real situations that happened and how our government screwed up. But they are good movies to watch.
