Danny Dietz got the worst of it. He was shot 11 times. 1 SHOT IN THE LEFT ANKLE 1 SHOT IN THE RIGHT CALF 1 SHOT IN THE RIGHT THIGH 1 SHOT IN THE GROIN 2 SHOTS IN THE STOMACH 2 SHOTS IN THE THROAT 3 SHOTS IN THE HEAD Early in the battle his right thumb was completely blown off and he had to shoot left handed. The movie shows him losing 3 fingers but thats incorrect. And lastly in 1 of the jumps off the mountain both of his legs were broke when the other 3 SEALs landed on top of him. From that point on Marcus Luttrell had to carry him down the mountain. Except for Marcus Luttrell every Navy SEAL you see in those pictures at the end of the movie died on that mission. ALL OF THEM.....

I recommend watching Marcus himself tell the story of Operation Red Wings. The movie is good but unfortunately it does sugar coat a few things and leaves out key moments like Marcus’s trainer he had as a kid and how it motivated him to crawl in those mountains until he found the waterfall, Mike Murphy’s cries for help and Marcus’s change of views on the people of Afghanistan after more or less hating them after 9/11.

In the book, Marcus' rescue was more complex and drawn out than the movie can afford to show. In real life, the Afghans protected Marcus for five days, and he lost 30+ pounds and picked up a wicked bacterial infection in his digestive tract.

To answer your question at 7:30, SEAL stands for SEa Air and Land. So despite being a team within the US Navy they can and do operate in all areas. Lesser known team equivalent to the US Navy SEAL in the British Forces is the SBS or Special Boat Service which falls under the Royal Marines.

Everytime I see military men/women in public I make sure to thank them and I've raised my children to do the same, they deserve every praise they are entitled to!! My husband was a tunnel rat in Vietnam and my son was an army ranger, I'm proud of the work they've done, I don't know much about what my son did because he was highly classified..I don't like asking questions because they both suffer from PTSD, but they know I'm proud...I worked at a V.A. psych hospital and what I've seen these men and women suffer from is heartbreaking!! Pashtuns embrace an ancient traditional, spiritual, and communal identity tied to a set of moral codes and rules of behaviour, as well as to a record of history spanning some seventeen hundred years. Pashtunwali promotes self-respect, independence, justice, hospitality, love, forgiveness, revenge and tolerance toward all (especially to strangers or guests).] It is considered to be the personal responsibility of every Pashtun to discover and rediscover Pashtunwali's essence and meaning. It is the way of the Pashtuns. We have melmastya, being a good host, nanawatai, giving asylum, and badal, vengeance. Pashtuns live by these things. The Pashtun tribes are always engaged in private or public war. Every man is a warrior, a politician and a theologian. Every large house is a real feudal fortress. ... Every family cultivates its vendetta; every clan, its feud. ... Nothing is ever forgotten and very few debts are left unpaid.

One of the guys who died in this battle--- Michael Patrick Murphy---- grew up on Long Island in NY like me, but I did not know him. One day I was walking down the street near my mother's home, when I saw the entire street blocked off for a funeral. There were military personnel everywhere. I just stood there watching in silence with all the other people from the neighborhood. It was very moving. Later they named the local post office in his hometown in Michael's honor. He is a hero.

Navy SEALs do missions or operations in every climate or landscape. Sea, Air and Land is what SEALs stand for. They are part of the Navy so they are stationed with a Navy crew overseas which is actually better because they can be deployed faster then most ground troops. Maritime is there specialty. :)

The US military has several branches of special forces. Each branch severs a distinct purpose. The Army Special Forces (The Green Berets ) purpose is to go behind enemy lines then organize and train resistance groups. Like the French Resistance in WW2. Seals and Marine Raiders are more strike forces. Sent in for a specific mission. According to a couple of SeALs the discussion between members while on mission is normal. Once un mission there no rank among them. Each member has a say from experience. The team leader will make the final call.

Danny Dietz was trying to reach his wife’s design paper. She wanted him to help pick out colors I think. He was from Colorado and there’s a statue dedicated to him. Michael Murphy who died trying to make the call was trying to buy an Arabian horse for his bride to be I think? Marcus named his son after his “redhead” friend Axe. It’s so sad knowing all those men died on that mission. Seals stands for SEa, Air and Land. So they fight anywhere. Seal Team 6 killed Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan. They are elite. Yes, a great movie. I wouldn’t have killed those goat herders but I would have tied them to trees and let them take time to get loose so our guys had a chance to get away. Or at least leave their hands tied behind them…tough I know but it would have slowed them down a lot and given our boys a chance. Good reaction!🥰

Try "Danger Close" about the Australians in Vietnam. I don't think it has been reacted to, or not often. The mission really should have been scrubbed at the landing. The ropes were dropped which they were not supposed to do. That was a big clue that some Americans were in the area. So even though the helicopters often did fake landings at othed points, the ropes were a dead giveaway. It was also a mistake to try to land the QRF at the same spot, especially without the Apaches. However, the reasoning was that they didn't know where the team was but that they might be near that LZ. If the ropes hadn't been dropped they might have made it. So it was a risk that didn't pay off. The actual ending was different. There was no battle. Marcus had been moved oit of the village and hidden in a cave, because the Taliban had come into the village for him but they were only just sent away without a fight. He stayed there for a while and I think was rescued from there or near it. Marcus was also very lucky. After he woke up in that cleft he was hiding in, he staggered around the mountain for a while and fell down a series of ravines. Somehow the Taliban did not notice him or at least did not catch him. Others did notice him, some of them the villagers. Had he gone done the other side of ridge, he would have probably been handed over to the Taliban right away.

So just scarf up when ya can and keep as much strength as possible Not a time for pride or etiquette lol In his case the food offered was genuine but he was “eating on training” as much as hunger

Operation Red Wings was in 2005. Unfortunately, even the latest and greatest in telecommunications still can be disrupted by the mountains.

for anyone wondering (like I was) on how they knew where each soldier was shot and how many times, they recovered the bodies and performed autopsies. Marcus said the only error was when he carried his friend he was not shot in the shoulder but in the head and was killed instantly. They didnt wanna go as far as showing his head exploding for obvious reasons

The crazy thing about this op was the rescue where the rangers landed at night in the same position where Marcus and his team was at in the beginning while there were no enemies for them

If you have not read the book, and you like books, then read this one. This book showed me that these SEALS are not not not ordinary people. If they are breathing, they can fight. Never seen anything like it.

For as good as he is at playing crazy characters (see 3:10 to Yuma) Ben Foster has the sweetest face. The thing about the argument about what to do is you can see everyone's perspective. None of them are just wrong. What a horrible thing to send basically kids into situations like this and expect them to know what to do. You mention this has been in the line-up since Hacksaw Ridge. I'd say in many ways this movie is as important and meaningful as that one, because any true story about people doing the right thing at great personal risk and cost should be celebrated. These villagers are the kind of people that make me feel like a monster by comparison.

I really liked him in 3: 10 to Yuma, but have you ever seen the movie Alpha Dog? With Emile Hirsch, Anton Yelchin, and (lol) Justin Timberlake? He's unhinged and terrifying in that movie, haha.

@@Timeisaflat_O I'll have to check it again, I haven't watched Alpha Dog in a long time and honestly forgot all about him. I remember JT's shudder at the poop on the floor, but that movie depresses me not only because of how horrible it was what happened to this kid but that then the horrible way his actor died just bums me out.

@@mage1439 Yeah, no doubt. Yelchin's death was an absolute tragedy. To be honest, I don't remember a whole lot about that movie apart from Ben Foster. He played Yelchin's brother (if that helps jog your memory).
