The officer was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the stolen truck was killed. He didn’t just run a red light, he stole the truck and at one point was driving on the wrong side of the road. However, many states don’t allow PIT maneuvers in excess of 35 MPH. So this incident was very controversial.

Actually there are some jurisdictions that if the vehicle they are pursuing is driving fast and reckless enough they will let the driver go. This is sometimes done to avoid innocent bystanders from being injured or even killed.

April 10, 2020. After fleeing from law enforcement officers over an estimated 20-mile stretch of highway, Justin Battenfield, 34, of Van Buren died as his vehicle left the roadway in a crash along the 72-hundred block of Arkansas Highway 255 in Fort Smith earlier today. An Arkansas State Police patrol car was involved in the crash leaving one trooper injured. At approximately 6:30 AM, an officer of the U.S. Forest Service initiated a pursuit of a southbound vehicle on U.S. Highway 71. The officer had reportedly witnessed the vehicle fail to stop for a traffic signal and pass through the intersection along the highway shoulder. As a Sebastian County sheriff’s deputy joined the pursuit, Battenfield reversed direction, traveling northbound along U.S. 71 where state troopers took the lead in the pursuit north of the Witcherville community. Moments before 7 AM Battenfield, still fleeing from federal, state, and county law enforcement officers, turned his vehicle eastbound onto Arkansas Highway 255 where he encountered an Arkansas State Trooper who attempted to stop the vehicle by means of a Precision Immobilization Technique. The maneuver led to the trooper’s patrol car and Battenfield’s vehicle leaving the roadway and overturning. The trooper has been hospitalized in Little Rock with non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic accidents are weird. I have responded to wrecks where I approached the scene and didn’t think there was a chance of anyone surviving only to find the occupants with minor to no injuries. Then there were the wrecks where I pulled up and they appeared to be a minor accident only to find that one of the occupants died.

You're right, best practice is to leave the patient in the vehicle until Fire and EMS arrive to extricate properly. Unless there is fire or possible fire. The deputy's car was smoking so they rushed to get him out. Fortunately the smoke decreased and there was no fire because they should have pulled him further from the vehicle before they started treating him. As for the driver of the pickup, the deputy wasn't going to get too close until he was reasonably sure that he wasn't going to come at him with a weapon. Did you notice that he wasn't just standing and looking, he had his weapon drawn and was covering the driver until a second man came to check the driver while being covered?

Kabir, actually here in the US some states or cities have rules that govern whether the police are allowed to continue a pursuit and are sometimes ordered to stop pursuing them. When the pursuit goes into a heavily traffic area or a heavily occupied area, they call it off as collateral damage could be too great and the general public is in danger if the chase were to continue. So, yeah, they keep going knowing that they could possibly get away with it.

Modern trucks have pretty good engines and power trains. It's amazing at how improved these newer engines are compared to just 20 years ago. They can get 150+ more horsepower out of a smaller engine than the older bigger ones. Like for instance, my 2016 3.5L V6 Ecoboost makes 365 Hp, while my 1999 5.9L V8 made only 290 hp, I think . Suspension technology is also much better than it used to be. Even though these trucks look top heavy, the suspension can pull off some pretty good maneuverability. But obviously not at 100+ mph.

I don't know about Arkansas car chases, but it's probably not a common thing there, at least to this level of chase. In Calif, it's more regular, to where the police usually back off by this point and the helicopter takes over. It's risky to keep following this guy, but it's the officers' discretion unless protocol or Chief commands otherwise. Also, you may already know this, but here in the U.S., it is a law for all other drivers to yield to the sirens, meaning get out of their way asap, usually pulling over to right, but sometimes on freeways it's hard to hear sirens until they're right up on ya.

I believe the police officer survived, the truck driver was killed. There has been a lot of controversy over the pursuit rules.. does it endanger people more if they let the guy go,, or does it endanger people more if the police stop them by all means.. In some states and cities it does happen that the police will call off a chase. If they are in heavy traffic areas, they will stop the chase rather than endanger their lives or the safety of innocent people.
@omarcanales1836
@omarcanales1836 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what I was thinking of when he was saying you aren't going just stop chasing you. In some cities, they will. If it's deemed that continuing pursuit poses more danger than just letting the guy go, they'll have to stop chasing. I can see why this was controversial. May not be a popular opinion but non of this was worth pulling him over for a traffic stop. The amount of damage this cost to the tax payer was not worth that running a red light ticket. And if this was about safety, well look how it ended. Someone does, might have been his fault but doing a pit maneuver at 90 mph, I find it hard to believe the police didn't think that there would be at least major injury. Non of this was worth it. The cop could have been killed. It is pretty fucked up how no cop makes any effort what so ever to even check on the guy. I can only assume they must have been able to immediately see this dude was very dead. Otherwise it's kind of fucked up. You killed him for running a red light. Poor choices were made here by everyone.

Not to mention that American cars are also usually bigger and heavier than cars in other countries. Crashes that involve SUVs and Trucks (which happen to be the two most popular car categories in America) are much more likely to be fatal due to not only their size but also their higher center of gravity (which increases the likelihood of rollovers). Very unfortunate.

They're *quicker* than people give them credit for, but they aren't faster. Not by a long shot, physics gets in the way and the manufacturers set speed limiters on them for usually one of two very good reasons; one, long driveshafts have a resonant frequency that they shouldn't pass or you run the risk of it whipping and subsequently leaving what's left of the undercarriage when it snaps free. Two, speed ratings on available tire sizes are often enforced by ECU limits because some idiot will undoubtedly try and sue a manufacturer when his R (106mph) or S (112mph) rated swampers start to fly apart at 125mph.

The Arkansas State troopers are completely out of control. There's another recent video where a ASP cop was trying to stop a pregnant woman for speeding. She slowed down, put on her hazard flashers, and kept driving looking for a safe place to pull over. This is what the Arkansas driver's handbook tells you to do. But the cop decided she was "fleeing" and pitted her car, flipping it over. She sued successfully and settled for a large sum.

The thing most states forbid Pitt maneuvers if the speed is in excess of 35 mph because anything over that is likely to prove fatal to the driver of at least one of the vehicles now don't get me wrong this guy was running and he wasn't going to stop but there are ways to go about that yo the truth is that there were multiple times when we saw people out ahead of him waiting at stop signs to join the chase why didn't they just deploy spike strips yeah that's my immediate reaction why didn't they deploy spike strips this paper reports the trooper survived the driver of the truck did not and all it was was he ran a red light and wouldn't stop.

People can say it's his fault but doing a pit maneuver at that speed, the cops knew full well that would kill him. That's why they didn't even bother checking on him. They already knew. Now he may have committed a crime, but that's why they have courts of law. Cops should never have the authority to straight up kill you. Now if this dude was wanted for something serious, maybe I'd understand but running a red light? This was poor decision making from both sides. Although one side is guilty of running a red light and the other of killing a human being. Which crimes more serious?

@@omarcanales1836 I agree with you yes there were things they could have done but there was never a good reason for them to run a pit maneuver at 109 miles an hour because you're right they knew that was a death sentence they knew it.

I would assume the pickup driver didn't stay in his lane thinking it might discourage police from overtaking him. Swerving could be strategic. Not saying it's a good idea....

Well, the referenced video description lists a excerpt from the Sargeant's point of view. Stating that the pickup driver was fataly injured and that he received "multiple serious injuries" but does not explain further.

Given the reactions and actions of the officers standing by, he was likely visible through the (now missing) rear window and in a state that would be called "incompatible with life". And yet they still cover him, just in case... even though looking at the dynamics, that he wasn't ejected means he was belted in, and belted in means the belt tensioners fired, holding him bolt upright while the roof load exceeded design contraints, so there's a decent chance that his neck had an unnatural angle to it, or brains were visible.

After the chase involves heavy traffic and innocent lives plus congested areas then the police should back off rather than endanger multiple innocent lives

To be fair i dunno if that was a PIT maneuver. That truck was trying to stay in front of every cop that approached him. You can hear the radio say "i'm gonna try and get up in front" then he goes for it and the truck turns into him as if he were still trying to fend him off or run the cop off road. Maybe im wrong but if that was a PIT maneuver the cop took it mid body of the truck. Way too far up.

The guy is going between lanes so the officer can't get in-front of him so they can't box him in that's why a pit maneuver is used . I enjoy watch your channel have a great day

typical police regulation recommends that an officer not attempt the PIT at speeds greater than 35 miles per hour (55 km/h), and requires careful choice of location, considering all possible effects on other traffic vehicles and pedestrians. so at 109mph the officer was 3 times over the limit for a pit maneuver.

When I follow a vehicle that flees it's approached in one of 2 ways. They'll pull over after a few minutes then comply to the stop. Or, they'll risk innocent lives and have to be stopped at all measures. Its realized that mistakes happen so when you stop, it's taken into consideration for a misdemeanor. The stopping part is the key in consideration. Ya run, every felony is thrown your way no matter what. Why? Because you deserve it.

3:16 I think he is simply using the middle of the road. I don't think he is drunk. Using the middle makes it much harder for the police to pass. 8:33 A really high speed chase like this don't happen that often. But I don't have the figures. Probably figure one of these a week somewhere in the US. Slightly slower speed happens all the time. In fact the speed limit on rural interstate in Texas is 85 mph anyway. If Arkansas is the same & passing slower traffic is supposed to done 10 to 15 mph fast . . . Well you can be close to that legally. 17:29 They have drawn down on the purp. If I recall (seen this one a few times) there was little need to check on him. He was pretty mangled up. The police office did survive in pretty good shape.

I think that police should be allowed to use PIT maneuvers safely. Suspects aren't going to just stop in the middle of a pursuit. They put innocent lives at risk. They can't just be allowed to run for miles and miles!
