I believe the last guy was a missionary and believed God would protect him. Admirable but yet those people were warning him. He needed to take that seriously. Those islands were super creepy. All bad. I wouldn’t go to any of them. Good reaction Kabir.
@chrishemry72 жыл бұрын
I don't think the mindset of any missionary is that "God will protect them". I think it is more of the idea of risking your life to bring others to the light, and if you die, then you die as a martyr. I think it is also worthwhile to mention that no matter how primitive a people are, they still have the same basic emotions of all other humans and will have some kind of restraint not to kill another person who is non-threatening. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for this man, and fleeing for his life twice didn't make him particularly endearing. Still, he died a martyr.

Last guy deserved it. He was there to convert the natives, AKA a missionary. Which... EW. (Whole "white savior", ethnocentric mindset here) Putting aside the gross egotism of his "mission" and him blatantly ignoring their SEVERAL warnings, just going over there would put those people at risk. They've have had little to no contact with outside people, which means little to no contact with various viruses and bacteria we are used to. You could probably expect something similar to what happened to the Native Americans after Columbus. Devastation. There's also the problem of exploitation that accompanies "civilizing" other groups of people. For the record, there has been peaceful contact with the Sentinelese before, but members of their tribe have been kidnapped and even killed due to expose by people who wanted to establish "contact". The tribe has been very clear about their refusal to see other people and as Ballen mentioned in the video, the island and surrounding water are forbidden from traveling by outsiders. JUST LEAVE THEM ALONE

I would not. I have my limits especially when there is proof/stories of those who went and did not come back. As for the last guy, he had a mission to help spread Christianity to those who might not been accustomed to the religion. I wonder if someone higher up gave him that assignment. If so, how did they feel and did they try to get another young recruiter to enter the Island, without telling the person what happened to the guy before. I think the second time he made it to the Island and the young boy that shot the arrow at him, and the bible prevented him to be pierced by the arrow, it was a sign. A sign that God will protect him since he is doing the greater good, or he was lucky and better not come back. I guess the Islanders thought who this guy is and why isn't he running away from us. The Islanders did not attack him right off because he was so brave. That is why he had the bigger calling to help these people and save them spiritually. I assume he wanted the fisherman to leave him so there is no chance to run away since there is no boat/rescue. His beliefs and the good word will protect him, and it was meant to be he either gets through to these people or he dies in the name of the religion. If a person (black) goes on the Island with the same yellow paint on their face, would the Islanders at least be interested in meeting the person. I do not know how they would communicate since they had their own language. Maybe a person presenting gifts to the Islanders like Matches, seeds to plant things, etc... Would the Islanders at least be interested and when the visitor is finished, then kill him. I do not know, if the visitor strikes a match and then there is fire, it might think this man has evil powers that they never seen, and he will be doomed. It reminds me of the story of the missionaries that went to the Hawaiian Islands, then the Islanders were getting sick and dying through the diseases the missionaries brought to the Island which the missionaries would have an immune system to survive a common cold. The Hawaiians who did not have outsiders come on the Island and they immune system waws not able to fight off these new germs and now they were exposed to the ills of these outsiders which killed them. I heard when the Islanders had a fever, they were so hot they went into the ocean to cool off. A lot of them died because associating with outsiders. I think through the years, more outsiders came on the island, U.S. military, tourism and there is less and less full-blooded Hawaiians. I know how precious their Islands, nature, the Gods and their beliefs and now outsiders have taken over, over-throne their Queen and now it's an American state. The Maui fires is not helping when there are stories of rich people wanting to buy up more of their land and kick out the Hawaiians even more.

Snake island you would need to be in a protective suit that covers your entire body is flexible enough to move in but strong enough that no type of fang can penetrate it. Including a helmet of some type to protect your head and face. Maybe kevlar. But honestly dont know if even that is strong enough, maybe kevlar with steel plates in every place possible while still being mobile in it. As to the last group. I mean come on. Hello if your going violence version you bring a gun and a few grenades, they see shit go BOOM in a big enough way they will shit themselves in fear. Or if you want to go in as a God you wear armor enough to prevent there spears and shit from hurting you then bring them various Forms of fire. Show them how to make fire from Rocks, or by spinning sticks together, show them your amazing magics and they would Bow to you.

That last guy wanted to share the word of God. How ignorant and arrogant. There is an understanding that having contact with these people puts them at great risk of getting diseases from us. That last guy's problem was that he insisted on forcing his religious beliefs on those natives. That's what can happen when you treat others like condemned souls because they don't practice your religion. They did the right thing in my opinion. He could have brought germs or viruses they've never been exposed to. As a Cree, I've heard all the stories passed down about how Europeans brought the same thing to America, but we were too accepting and suffered the consequences. Nope. Wouldn't go anywhere near those places. Chau was trying to convert the Sentinelese to Christianity. There are some people who are overzealous with regards to religion to the point that they will refuse to take no for an answer. I have no sympathy for Chau whatsoever. In 1974 National Geographic sent a film crew to the island. The director got an arrow to the leg. Skyrim joke "arrow to the knee" comes to mind. In 1981 the Primrose ran aground within sight of their island having struck a coral reef. People on the ship spotted them on the shore building boats and called for help. Weather conditions were such that the Sentinelese couldn't reach the ship in their canoes, and couldn't hit the crew with arrows. The crew would be rescued by helicopter. The Sentinelese would eventually salvage metal from the ship. In 1991 Archeologists were able to have peaceful contact with the Sentinelese, and successfully give them gifts, it was noticed that they had integrated metal into some of their weapons. In 2004 following the Indian Ocean tsunami the Indian government sent a helicopter to the island to see if the Sentinelese were okay. The Sentinelese loosed metal tipped arrows upon the helicopter.

I am a Christian, and I have a hard time believing that any legitimate missionary organization would have certified him. Right off the bat, he was breaking the law just by going to the island. Any missionary will tell you that kind of behaviour does not endear missionaries to law enforcement, and often gets them banned from entire regions. So, no to that. As a Christian, I get angry every time I hear this story, because this young man not only put himself in harm's way, but involved other, vulnerable people in his stupid escapade. 6 of them were arrested. Way to go, Mr "missionary". Maybe he should have sat down with the fishermen and talked to them about his faith? But no, where would the fame and glory be in that? Better stop now, my blood pressure is high enough already.

14:46 if I read correctly, John was a Christian missionary. It's not arrogance. He literally was willing to risk his own life to bring these people the gospel. He was not willing to risk the lives of the fisherman, otherwise you might have a case against him. This happened with a tribe in South America who killed the 5 missionaries that had come to reach the Waodani, but the wives of those missionaries went back and were able to reach those people with the same love their husbands were attempting to and now the whole tribe has progressed not only in how they live, but how they love because the gospel of salvation through Jesus was brought to them. Maybe that will happen one day with this tribe.

John likely would have also brought diseases to the tribe

It's hard to instill logical thinking in a Christian missionary.

You could have left off the word "missionary". Both are correct.
