My ex stopped eating pork after this. We lived in BC at the time all of these horrors came to light. He denied that there was any correlation between this story, and him stopping eating pork. And he honestly didn't believe that there was. When I pointed out, a few years later, that anything suspect would long be gone, he slowly started eating pork again. I said nothing.

The area where the infamous pig farm once was in Port Coquitlam is now a condo development. There's even a brewery there. Pickton once approached my Mom in a bar in the downtown Eastside. Once her friend showed up, he quietly slinked away into the night.

I'm a Canadian, and former sex worker, and this is a prime example of why stigma and criminalization of sex workers is so dangerous! Every worker is a person, regardless of how she earns money. If not for stigma, this entire thing would never have happened after the first woman went missing.

If you'd like a deep dive on this story, the Last Podcast on the Left did a 4 episode series on Robert Pickton and it's very good. The entire story is just wild.

Also a tad bit of additional information, prostitution is actually legal here, there's extreme laws against rings or pimps, but if someone wants to sell their body we don't really care. I'm kinda glad because I feel it probably prevents some sexual deviants from boiling over, however it is a very dangerous lifestyle.

If there’s a sudden increase in women disappearing, it should have been looked into a lot sooner and not dismissed. Being a prostitute or drug addict doesn’t make a person less deserving of human kindness.

Makes me angry when police dismiss or gaslight a woman in the ER. Physical proof that she was violated. Yet, action and a search warrant wasn't issued, until a man came forward with words only. Then, they decided they had reasonable suspicion. 😮💨

Lack of evidence? If they found bits and pieces of the other twenty, isn’t that enough evidence? There were two or three scripted crime dramas that had episodes based on this-the one in Criminal Minds springs to mind, probably because it was the most spot-on. Damn. I used to like Gummi Bears. Didn’t know they were made of squished critter. UGH.

1) The police didn’t investigate or believe this kind of murderous serial killing because that’s the kind of thing that only happens in the states, right? Not CANADA! We’re better than that! Never here! 2) Do you now understand why the death penalty is an appropriate punishment in many instances, Kabir?
@radbunnie22973 жыл бұрын
Actually a lot of horrific crimes happened in Canada 🇨🇦. A lot of serial killer in the 1960s through the 1980s one of their cities was label serial killer capital.

The arrogance of the "not CANADA!" mentality is something to behold. Not saying you have that, but a sizable chunk of the Canadian population does, and meanwhile f*cked up shit goes on often enough in precious Canada.

You act like horrific crimes don't happen here. They do. We are.not immune to it. Also we do not have the death penalty here anymore because we were worried about the fact that we might convict, sentence, and execute the wrong person. Usually you get 25 to life here (after 25 you go through the parole board)

Honestly it’s not often I side with law enforcement but if the people going missing are hardcore drug addicts, you gotta assume they took too much and OD’d?. Nobody investigates the deaths of hardcore drug addicts. The police don’t care about them. Sad but true. I know this from personal experience. I’ve lost 3 friends to overdoses.... You call the police and they’re passive. It’s no big loss to them. You call an ambulance and it’s not a priority. Your friend is dying in your arms and it’s NOT a priority. If I was a cop however and these girls all were seen at the same place before they died, drug addicts or not....that’s worth investigating

Its understandable from both sides. Someone going missing regardless of who they are should always be a priority. Sex work is a sin and any women putting themselves in that will always be perverse and wrong, but that doesn't take away any of their worth. However, It can be much harder to keep eyes and search people who aren't well established in society and lot of the times they do end up dropping off the radar. It is very sad.
