(Sorry I'm a few years late) Fun Fact: Doge (The Shiba Inu that says "wow") is actually named "Kabosu", after this fruit.

Sudachi(酢橘) means vinegar citrus so , I wouldn’t normally eat it on its own. And Kabosu is the fruit my dad uses when making サワー ( pronounced like the word “sour” and is an alcoholic beverage with any kind of citrus fruit juice) I think both aren’t very common for eating for say but , the Kabosu you had is too underripe. Kabosus are usually orange as you acknowledged that I think contributes to the missing flavor. (Sorry for the not so good English. As you could probably tell I’m not a native English speaker and I’m sure I have plenty of mistakes. Please let me know.(´-ω-`))

I grow both, but I prefer the Sudachi. I use them the same way as a lime or lemon - mixing it with vodka. Kids also like them if you dip the wedges in sugar. A big advantage they have over lemons and limes is that they are much more cold hardy, so you can grow them in zones that are impossible.

Yep, we grow the sudachi in zone 8 in Oregon and Washington. Bob Duncan grows dozens of Yuzu sudachi trees on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

I'm really enjoying the Japanese episodes. So many culinary gems there. I wouldn't mind living there for a year and just snack around the place. :D

those citrus seem to have some interesting flavours! I'd make fruit infusion out of it, especially in this hot Australian summer!

For whatever reason, the better quality Sudachi seems to include a few juniper branches in the package. I don't know if it's because more competent growers decide to dress up their product a bit or if packing it with juniper prolongs the shelf life.

I bought a really tiny sudachi tree last year, but it died. This episode makes me sad it died. At least my yuzu tree is doing OK.

There's also a species of fruit with the scientific name, akebia quinata, or chocolate vine, that's native to Japan and eastern Asia. I'm not sure if they're in season, and frankly they don't look very appealing, but it sounds like something you should try out.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 7 жыл бұрын
I really wanted to try it, but sadly it wasn't in season. Its eaten as a vegetable from what I understand, but it looks really strange.

sudachi would probably be great in mojito, in place of the lime

Have you tried the manganji pepper? It's a sweet pepper that is often called the king of Japanese peppers. Just curious.

Hey Jared! I'm gonna be in the Philippines next month and I want to try and find as many exotic fruits as I can! Do you have any tips, like where to find fruit stands that have uncommon fruits, or which fruit I should definitely try to find? Or any other good tip, I'd highly appreciate it!! :)
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Calvin! I was there around this time of year. I would just hit all the markets you can especially if you are visiting different regions, there was a lot of fruit there that I only found in a particular area; take a look at the intros of my videos in my Philippines playlist, I mention the location where I found each fruit I found. Davao has a reputation for being the best place for fruit, especially durian. Although you will still find a lot of the fruit that grows there available in major cities. My absolute favorite from the trip is the Marang, definitely give that one a try. Good luck hunting!

Hey can anybody tell me the difference between a Sudachi and a Calamansi? Both look the same but comes form different countries.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 2 жыл бұрын
They look similar but are different citrus species. The flavor is different, sudachi is stronger and more harsh, better for cooking. Calamansi is like an orange and lime in flavor, can be used like a lime.
