The song has a great melody, but even more interesting is that it is very honest in its criticism of small town life. It seems to be in fashion, especially recently, for country stars to idealize rural life as somehow morally superior to an urban existence. It is a breathe of fresh air to see such candor about how the cultural expectations of "country folk" can be stifling and oppressive.

And it did receive repeated airplay for a while. But it is a disappointment how it wasn't a smash hit or even a blip on the radar beyond country radio. Kacey deserves huge success. no it isn't about being a lesbian it's about a woman in love with a man watching him with his lover who isn't her. She's saying she wants to be more like his partner because that way she would be with the man who she's in love with. The idea being that the singer wishes she would have more of the other woman's qualities so the man would find her more appealing and pick her instead. Its seriously a beautiful heartbreaking song about unrequited heterosexual love.

Nice to hear someone sing about the reality of small town life. Everything now seems to paint this picture perfect country life of beer, lifted trucks, and cut off jeans. When in reality, this is often what really goes on in the smaller, middle and lower class places around. While it's not all doom and gloom in these places, it is still nice to hear someone sing about the more realistic aspects and just real life in general instead of making life just seem like a constant party.

Still sounds just as amazing as it did thr first time.

I actually think of it the opposite. I was so happy to escape that safety net and mundane simple life back then but. I think there's something beautiful about people who are living a really content, peaceful, simple rural life. After living in a hustle urban culture for so long and trying to keep up, it feels like a lot of people have lost their purpose. Idk it's kinda a nostalgic feeling for the simplicity of my childhood and I think fondly on that. Some people are just experiencing as adults too :)

I actually live in the town she grew up in and graduated from. So many people i've seen graduate have just gone the same path as their parents, the town is so unaccepting to diversity and differences, and has very little "economical" growth. My parents split up when I was 5, all but about 3 people from my graduating class are married engaged with a kid on the way or more than one already, everyone I know goes to church (almost) every week, I have friends who lived or currently live in trailer parks, and everyone who's even attempted to move away has come back around a year later and are now living the same as everyone else where I live, there are people hooked on drugs and overdosing, and there are ones who get drunk and end up as crosses on the highway - including someone in my class less than a year after graduating. I've watched all this stuff cycling around my whole life and I've always wanted to move away. Always. Then this song comes out and it just validates everything I've always known and it makes me cry because it's so true and even now it hits a chord way deep down in my wanderlust fueled soul that makes it scream to flee.

Lana Del Rey is a really good comparison to Musgraves in this period of her career. Unfortunately, Musgraves seems to have gone all-in on the pop route and lost most of the charm that made her early stuff touching and relatable.

I hadn't heard this song in ages and it reminded me of why I fell in love with Kacey's music. But it also saddens me because at the time, I thought she was going to change the face of Country music and finally destroy the brainless, empty pop trash that permeated the industry. With her latest album, all she did was become another Taylor Swift and sell out so blatantly that it just about breaks my heart. What a shame.

This will probably go down as one of the best country songs of all time. Beautifully heartbreaking and so relatable with just genuine, raw lyrics. It's really a complex song if you think about it but she pulls it off with such simplicity which is so hard to do. Everyone can relate to this song in some way. We either know people who are afraid to leave their comfort zones and just get stuck and then they look at us as if we're crazy for leaving. Or we ourselves are stuck in that rut and just content with settling and we can't find a way out. Most country songs just glorify small town life but she speaks to the reality of what it can actually be like and it's not always pretty for some, and you have to really respect her for that. Most definitely among the best songwriters of this generation of any genre. She's what makes me still love country music so much even though the genre has drastically changed. She's just herself and that's something that's so hard to find in artists today. Proves country isn't just all about partying, tailgates, and trucks.

Expectations, pressure and the illusion of life. This song is like the painting on the wall we all aspire to. Behind it all there's a mass of paths taken and not taken. Regrets and fears and worries about the future. "It ain't slowin' down" Whoever helped write this song is right on it.

she has done a master in lyric and songwriting!! that chorus cmon!!! and this americana quality of the videos!! so kacey!!!, the message of the song is so hard and criticizes society and the way we are "supposed" to live and "what is expected" from us.... in the chorus when she sings brother hooked on mary jay mother hooked on mary kay daddy hooked on mary thats sooo hard, the broken merry go round is people in this broken society scheme which they cant escape somehow, i felt it that way i love the message and the song
