I always liked Herman Prey, his voice would give me goose bumps. He came over as a kind and sensitive person. He had a great sense of humor. he was sincere, and without any ego. The music was his great love and I will miss his sensitive and warm voice. Brava, Herr Prey und vielen Dank fur die music.

Den Hermann Prey habe ich als Kind im ORF- Wunschkonzert: "Sie wünschen- Wir spielen, Das Rot- Weiß- Rote Wunschkonzert", vor ca. 40 Jahren das erste Mal gehört. Er interpretierte das deutsche Volkslied: "Im schönsten Wiesengrunde" so innig und gefühlvoll, dass es mir bis heute noch in sehr guter Erinnerung geblieben ist. Ich war ergriffen davon, wie Hermann Prey dieses Lied gemeinsam mit dem Tölzer Knabenchor gesungen hat. Wir waren 1998 gerade bei den Mörbischer Seefestsspielen, als wir von Wiener Kreisen, es waren ältere Damen, von seinem Tod erfuhren. Wir waren sehr traurig. Seine vom ihm interpretierten Lieder bleiben hier wenigsten erhalten! was beim Wiederhören eine Freude ist!

I had the pleasure of meeting H. Prey and his wife on several occasions, in NYC, in Florida, and in Germany. He was a very wonderful as unassuming and sincere human being, and, of course, a baritone with an exceptionally warm and beautiful voice.

I wholly endorse the positive comments made by other contributors. I've sung this cantata many times, but have never achieved HP's beauty of tone and immaculate phrasing. Fischer-Dieskau and Janet Baker are marvellous, too.

This is very well done, and Prey has a very lovely voice. But-there is always a “but”!-after listening to the most sublime baritone voice I’ve ever heard, combined with his perfect technical control and absolutely otherworldly musicality, I can never again experience such a deep reverence for a baritone singer’s art after hearing Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Of course, *this is entirely my own experience, and I wish to take nothing away from anyone else’s beloved singers,* because the human voice evokes such a personal response in every human heart.

Thank you for posting this solo cantata sung by Hermann Prey. I had the vinyl years ago with cantata 56 on the flip side and enjoyed them both very much. My other favorite rendition of this cntata is the Baker/Menuhin. I love them equally. Thanks again!

Usually, the oboe was played by Helmut Winschermann himself. He was a great player.

Helmut Winschermann, the conductor, 1920-2021, was also a famous oboist, but he had already been retired from oboe playing around 1987. Who is the oboe player here? Does someone know it?

The oboist is Liviu Varcol who did study with Helmut Winschermann in Detmold.
