1) To cover your weak spot while performing the technique. 2) To bring your leg back right after striking, defending your weak spot. Front kicks happen often in non-consensual fighting, so, be careful. Very much appreciated, thanks to all who made this.

Kagawa Sensei is showing the real or original way of kicking---not so high! because by kicking high you will open a wide gap at the groin which can be attack that is why he is emphasizing quick recovery of kick to defend the gap. Kick at hip level of your opponent-- on the bladder, floating ribs, and kidney areas.

Master Kagawa was right: a rear-leg yoko ger, ke kome is slow and makes us vulnerable. Instead, either a yoko geri keaage , as shown by himself , might firstly close the gap. In my humble opinion, a mid-level rear stomp kick would stop the opponent´s front low kick, andafter stopping the front kick, it can be converted, by an expert, to full ke kome yoko geri to the gedan section of the body. All the best, and best regards. Paul,69
