LMPROVE YOUR SIDE KICK - YOKO GERI KEKOMI
@educatedcanadian740810 ай бұрын
I wss trained under one of the best striking dojos in Canada and they never corrected this kick. Or the hook kick. It was the snapping side kick. I can rechamber it to the head 2x but there is far more power in yours and I've seen Joe rogans spinning back kick which is this exact kick. It requires more hip mobility and abductor muscles to do but thanks to Nat Hurn your student i actually had to go to him for strengthening of the abductors and I've fought mma and didn't have this ability. Thank-you so very much for sharring. I feel I owe you

LMPROVE YOUR SIDE KICK - YOKO GERI KEKOMI
@educatedcanadian74087 ай бұрын
It's the angle of the supporting leg I've had to train to correct it ro be almost 180 dg facing the opposite direction. That's what helped open up the hips etc to throw this properly . Before I was crossing the feet and flicking it up there, head height but maybe not enough power. But now I've corrected it thanks to sensei john and Nat. Honestly it was his flexibility program where I learned to face the wall and turn 180 dg away from it with kicking leg only, bend knee etc. It looks alot better now. Thanks

This is really good and I like that bag exercise. The turning of the supporting heel is commonly emphasized but I've never seen it mentioned how the resulting foot position creates a more stable and powerful kick. Nice one!

Sensei John, you have beautiful form, and your kicks have a lot power; side kick have stopping power and can break ribs.
@steoveno10 ай бұрын
Only discovered your videos a week ago and they are excellent. Brilliant form. Would you consider doing a video on the side snap kick (kiage)? It's one that features heavily in kata, unlike the thrust kick, yet it is rare enough to see it executed correctly. Moreover, I also struggle to see it's practical use (unlike all the other kicks)! Oss

Sure I'll do that soon. 👍

A video on yoko keage would be great. I find it such a difficult kick to get anything like good form with. So many people seem to do this as a sort of weird side on front kick.@@jkgardiner

When you add some traveling (momentum) to the kick like Bruce Lee did in “Enter the Dragon”, this is a devastating kick. In my dojo, we are not allowed to deliver the full power while doing kumite, only to touch the opponent slightly to demonstrate the technique. Great tutorial, as always. 😊👍

Thank you. I did a Bruce Lee style kick at the very start of the video. 👍

I personally believe Yoko Geri Kikomi works better than Kiyage . When it comes to JKA or WKF kumite , kikomi is useful. What do you think ? I'm 3 rd Dan instructor from JKA Sri Lanka . By the way , your videos are exceptional. Short and cover essentials ❤
@jkgardiner10 ай бұрын
Yes I do prefer kekomi, keage I would use as a gedan kick only.
@prasadmunasinghe365110 ай бұрын
I wonder how to use Keage as Gedarn kick . It is an outward kick, isn't it ? Basadai also Carry the gedan kikomi instead

do you want to have the heel facing the opponent after you lift up the knee before twisting it horizontally also for mawashi and ura mawashi ?or do i do it like in his video he combines the kick throwing and the leg on the ground rotate ? kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGiynaaoebmIh7c

What about Yoko Geri keage ?
@jkgardiner10 ай бұрын
Will be a separate video, the kicks are delivered differently and will have different points to discuss.
@MA1980c9 ай бұрын
Why is Yoko geri rare in WKF and JKA kumite? I've seen it as a surprise tactic, but thats it.
@jkgardiner9 ай бұрын
Because unfortunately it rarely scores. I really like to use it as its great to stop an opponent coming forwards.
@MA1980c9 ай бұрын
@@jkgardiner So it's not out of fear that hitting with the heel will result in an excessive blow?
@jkgardiner9 ай бұрын
Not generally no, in WKF they wear a body protector now as well.. a lot of good techniques aren't used because they just don't tend to score well, mae geri is another one.
@MA1980c9 ай бұрын
@@jkgardiner why are judges reluctant to score them?
@jkgardiner9 ай бұрын
@TaeKwonDofilm because the faster techniques score first, kizami zuki, mawashi and ura mawashi geri. In JKA style kumite mae geri is probably more common. The more popular techniques are also clearer to see scored, a long jodan mawashi geri is clear when it scores but a front kick to the body it's harder to tell if it was blocked or not. That's just my guess anyway.
@ljubisaspasojevic106610 ай бұрын
Keage has no practical use. It was mae geri to the side and some masters wanted to make something new at any cost . You will not find keage in any karate school from Okinawa.
@jkgardiner10 ай бұрын
Yes keage comes from the other styles where they would do a mae geri in kata, kushanku for example, shotokan's Kanku dai uses the keage instead, so in application i have this in mind. Often mae geri is the better kick.
@ljubisaspasojevic106610 ай бұрын
@@jkgardiner mae geri is always better than yoko keage. With yoko keage you can only hurt yourself, your foot onto the elbow of the opponent for instance. To my experience i can not find any real usage of this kick.
