The writers tried to get rid of Bonnie every year because the studio made them hire Kat Graham. Then in later seasons Ian, who plays Damon, threatened to quit if they killed her. The writers were assholes to Kat/Bonnie.

The mistreatment of Bonnie on-screen & Kat off-screen is deplorable. You should see some of the convention interviews done with the cast/producer(s) of the show. I remember one where they had Kat off to the side where you couldn't even SEE her... But the rest of the cast & producers were HIGHLY VISIBLE. 😡
