That was really good, so glad you did this film otherwise I'd have to do it myself even though I don't have the patience for editing but at least I'd get 3-5 minutes before KZbin took it down. Also, not good on commentating on film, like Cuba Gooding Jr in this (sorry, wrong Jr, don't think Cuba has ever kissed and disposed of a dead body with Val Kilmer... allegedly!). May have meant Robert Downey jr. Wish my mum was as into film like your's is, mine still can't figure out how to get a VHS tape into a Blu-ray player!😁

Val Kilmer was a force of nature in this movie. Robert gets a lot of the accolades for this movie, but Val was right there with him with the sarcasm and humor.

If you want more like this, I'll put in a recommendation for 'The Nice Guys', another Shane Black movie that's tonally very similar. Love 'em both, and it kinda undeservedly tanked at the box office, so will do my part to get the word out...

The kid at the beginning playing young Harry as a magician is Downey's actual son Indio. When Harry reads the pages provided for him at the audition, his character says "you can go spit," which is something that Murtaugh says in the Lethal Weapon movies, and that character's partner dies. It's a pretty well-known story that in Black's original screenplay for Lethal Weapon 2, Riggs died at the end, so this is probably a little nod to that. When they dump the body from the lake on the side of the road, all they're worried about is making sure Harry isn't framed, so a bus stop is fine. They want the police to find the body, and there's little to no reason the police would trace it from a random bus stop back to Harry's hotel room. As far as the plot goes, I think you were mentally trying to make it more complicated than it is (which is also technically what Harry does). Harlan Dexter has an estranged daughter who wants her share of her mother's estate, so when she comes to Los Angeles to fight with her father about it, he has her committed to a mental institution, and hires a look-alike to pose as her and go in and drop the lawsuit. Unfortunately for him, the real daughter's boyfriend decides to come visit, and Harlan knows that he'll notice the look-alike is a fake, so Harlan has the real daughter killed and dumped in the lake. He also attempts to have his goons take out Perry (with the fake stakeout in the park) and kill the look-alike (who in her normal life, wears a pink wig), tying off all the loose ends. Harry and Harmony mistakenly believe Harmony's sister was talked into playing the part of the fake daughter (because she wants Harlan to be her father anyway), but she wasn't. She simply saw Harlan sleeping with the fake daughter (who she thinks is the real daughter) and takes her own life because it means he's just as bad as her existing abusive father. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang ended up being one of the last great roles in Val Kilmer's acting career before it was transformed by throat cancer that destroyed his vocal cords. You list off some of his biggest movies, such as Tombstone (1993) and Heat (1995), but another really excellent (but quite serious) movie he made right around this same time is Spartan (2004), which was written and directed by famous screenwriter/playwright David Mamet. He is also brilliant in his very first movie, which you did list: Top Secret! (1984), which is popular on reaction channels. It the second directorial effort by the team behind Airplane!, another over-the-top spoof movie (in this case, lampooning Elvis movies and WWII films -- not that you'll need to have seen any of either to get the jokes...you'll get that it's riffing on Elvis and WWII just knowing history).

Also, it's frequently not up to the actors whether or not they can improvise. Many directors, especially if they're also the writers, really want the actors to do it word-for-word, even if it sounds improvised. I think if people knew what was ad-libbed and what was word-for-word in movies, they'd be surprised a good third of the time.

Thanks for the info dump as always Tyler! Yeah, the story in this was a little confusing to follow for us during the first watch but reading over the plot helped a lot and then editing this really cleared things up for me at least. 😊

I love this movie! Robert and Val's acting and chemistry is so good, but it's also just a very well written and directed film. It's crazy to see RDJ's career trajectory after this though, really happy things turned around for him, well for all of us really haha. Great reaction as always, and cool to see your mom as a guest! Of all the fun little moments in all the Shane Black scripts I just can't help but be impressed with having a scene with a drunken actor mistakenly breaking into someone else's house in a film that is the beginning of a comeback for a talented actor who...pretty much did the same thing in real life. That's extra meta. Unless the script was written with Downey in mind, you gotta figure that Black added in in after the casting.

I love this movie so much. I watched after watching Iron Man wanting my Robert Downey Jr. fix lol. I won't lie I was a bit confused after watching the first time and didn't know what to think of the movie. Watched it again a couple days later and after noticing things I missed made the movie so much better and this is now one of my favorite Christmas movie to this day lol.

If you Ladies like Robert Downey Jr. , I would highly recommend "Tropic Thunder". It is a brilliant and singular comedy. "Air America" is another great one, also featuring Mel Gibson. 👍 And if you're in the mood for more serious fare, "Less Than Zero" really showed off his acting chops early in his career. 15:39 This whole sequence is Classic. "Why in pluperfect hell would you pee on a corpse?" 🤣🤣🤣

It’s not an action thriller, but it’s got an Iron Man connection: Chef. Lead actor and director is Jon Favreau, supporting actor John Leguizamo, and an excellent cameo with Robert Downey, Junior. There’s actually a number of cameos by name actors, including Dustin Hoffman and Scarlet Johansen. Sofia Vergara is the romantic interest.

Very nice reaction - yes, you two should do more together; this was lots of fun to watch - if you liked this movie, see The Nice Guys, another film in this mode from Shane Black - and don't feel bad if you had trouble following the plot - with movies like this it's kind of an intentional running gag how impossible the storyline is to follow - The Big Sleep is probably the prototype, a classic noir w screwball comic overtones, and I think even the director said he didn't understand it fully lol - you might want to see that, and then watch Long Goodbye and Inherent Vice, in that order - each movie's responding to the others before it, and all are classics - all riffing on Chandler and Faulkner

Your Mom seems nice. Thank you for sharing your family with us. I've never seen this movie. I've heard the title, but I don't know anything about it. Well... I know a bit more now. I don't think I could actually watch it now, though. It's got a close up of one of those square-root-of-64-legged creatures. (Can't say the name, or the algorithm will helpfully show me additional images that it thinks I might like. I'm like... seriously? Augh! All this 'smart' stuff is just so stupid.) But... getting back to the film. Yeah. I do like Robert Downie, Jr. I've truly enjoyed his work in the MCU. I actually cared about Iron Man. I like Michelle Monaghan, too. I've only seen her in two movies. Eagle Eye (with Shia La Boeuf) which is a surprisingly good action/mystery/thriller kind of thing. That, and Source Code, with Jake Gyllenhaal, which is a sci-fi action, mystery, thriller kind of thing. Both are very good. Both, I think, are rather underrated. At any rate... thank you again for letting us meet your Mom. She seems nice. So, Mom, Dad. Whom else will be joining you? I'll be along for the ride. I hope you have a pleasant week before Christmas, and two weeks before you have a Happy New Year!

Seeing as how you really enjoyed this great movie, I would highly suggest watching True Romance(1993). It stars Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette and Dennis Hopper, along with a fully stacked cast of supporting actors. Written by Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary, Directed by Tony Scott. It isn't a who-dun-it but it's certainly a thrill ride of boy-meets-girl.

There's another movie in this Universe, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It's a great film. It was supposed to be the same characters, but Kilmer was injured, and Downey was Iron Man. So they used Russel Crow and Ryan gosling. It's a fantastic film. You should watch this one together. Personally, I think Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the better movie.
