That line, "Just because someone stumbles and loses their way, doesn't mean they're lost forever," is such an iconic Charles line. It's like the thesis statement for his entire character. It's maybe THE core belief that he is based on... empathy. Bottomless, boundless empathy. Him getting to hear that from himself in this movie, and thereby course correcting when he was off his own path, was such a powerful moment.

Rogue was completely cut from the theatrical version, so there was less injury to Kitty, no scenes planning to and then rescuing Rogue, no second death for Bobby, no scene of Kitty rescuing Magneto since she was still keeping Logan in the past, etc.

Great reaction like always. Day's of Future's Past was essentially a soft reboot. It erased, with the exception of First Class, all the events of the movies that came before it. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the original X-Men trilogy, and The Wolverine were all erased from the timeline. In the new timeline only First Class, Days of Future Past (the 1973 events), Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, Logan, New Mutants and both Deadpool movies exist. That's why Cyclops and Jean are alive when Logan wakes up in the new future because X3 never happened in the new timeline. X1 still has to happen to some extent. Rogue still gets her white streak, which was caused by Magneto's machine.
@loudboy317

@@MarcoMM1 It didn't completely erase X-Men Origins: Wolverine. His childhood and the war montage all happened before and during both First Class and Days of Future Past. Wolverine may have already quit team X by the time this movie took place and we know the weapon X experiment still happened since he has metal claws again in Apocalypse. The Nagasaki flashback scene in the Wolverine is the only part of the film that still exists in the timeline. The only thing that's erased is that fight scene between Wolverine and the 2009 version of Deadpool.

As a fellow Cherik shipper, it’s honestly insane how this movie develops their relationship. It shows that a full 10 years after the beach incident, Charles is a depressed alcoholic in self-imposed exile in his house and Erik has wound up in federal prison with a life sentence. No couple has ever handled a breakup worse than they did. They were down so bad for each other! And then in the dark future, they’ve finally put aside all their differences and working together in perfect harmony - even in the middle of a life-or-death rescue, Erik even steals that little moment to show off and impress Charles when he says “in other words, a door” and Charles’ smirk in response is priceless. Then Erik’s last words express hope that he and Charles might get some of those lost years back, as he feels it was a waste not to spend his life with Charles this time around - in the end, that’s what he most wants to happen when history is changed, even more so than the salvation of mutants.

Quick heads-up: A few of the characters from the very start of the movie (including the girl that creates portals) are in a show called "The Gifted". I think it's only a couple of seasons long, but might be worth a watch if you really like the whole X-Men universe (I really enjoyed it at least). It's not canon so you don't have to worry about timelines and stuff like that Great reaction as always. Hope you had a wonderful week off. See you for the next one

A lot of people push for The Rogue Cut, but I understand why Rogue was edited out of the theatrical version. Getting her included in the plot feels like a side-quest from a video game that diverts attention away from the main plot. The movie does try to provide a reason for it by injuring Kitty, but she just ends up gutting it out in the theatrical version and they never go to rescue Rogue. So the fact that the theatrical version managed to cut Rogue out without rendering the movie incoherent proves that her presence wasn't entirely necessary.
@paulkondon
@paulkondon 2 ай бұрын
yeah, I didn't see the Rogue cut for a long time, and I thought it took a long time for Kitty to hang on while rescuing Rogue. She probably knew she would die, especially after Rogue took her powers in her weakened state. It wouldn't matter, because the timeline would be wiped anyway, and it would require retconning Rogue's loss of power from the "cure" in X3 to be temporary in the same way as Magneto's apparently was. It was easier to not bother with fan-servicing Rogue's appearance, and leaving her possibly still powerless in the cameo at the end.
@mamandes

Exactly! I like added scenes as much as the next guy, but, when you watch the movie from beginning to end, the Rogue scenes really slow down the pacing of the movie, not to mention that cutting back to the future so much distracts from the narrative flow of the movie, IMO.

I agree with everything you stated. I just think that they needed to somehow another make it where Rogue was included (either physically or in words) so that it would make sense that the sentinels were gaining the abilities of other mutants, because mystique can only look like them.

While I did enjoy the movie itself, the one thing that I never understood was the premise of Trask using Mystique's power to create the ability for Sentinels to adapt. Her power isn't adaptation or replication. She can only mimic the physical appearance of a person, not copy and use their powers. Still, the movie is fun

@@scotiej the Rogue Cut explains this, though - the Sentinels’ creators held Rogue captive in Cerebro, so Charles couldn’t find her, and incorporated her power into their construction. This is why the Sentinels don’t become a global threat until after the events of “The Last Stand” - it was Rogue’s capture that enabled the Sentinels to reach their full potential that was begun by Mystique.

The X-Men timeline is *supposed* to be as simple as "Every movie released before this takes place in the original timeline, and every movie released after this takes place in the new timeline." But there are a lot of details that don't line up, especially given how much is retconned. The big one for me is that the scene where Logan wakes up at the end of this movie wouldn't actually look or play out this way given the events of Dark Phoenix. So, you can imagine these stories taking place in the same timeline or not, but you really do have to ignore continuity if you want to not drive yourself crazy (lol).

Just think about all the scenes in the future after Logan went into the past. As soon as Logan would have arrived the future would have changed into what we saw at the end because Logan already changed the past = no fight against the Sentinels cause they were never developed. I dont complain its just never think to much about time travel in Hollywood Movies, they never got it right so far in any Movie or Show. Anyway, great reaction from you. Have a nice time.

First Class is my favorite X-Men movie and Logan is probably the best. This one is up there, though. In the comics, it was Kitty, not Logan that went back. But Logan is the star of these movies, so... Also it was Senator Kelly not Trask that was assassinated. Peter's last name is Maximoff. When Marvel sold the rights to Fox, they sold all the related characters. In the comics, Wanda and Peter were originally members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with Magneto. But they later joined the Avengers. So they were a grey area. That's why Quicksilver was in Age of Ultron and quickly killed off but also in these movies. Magneto was their father at one point, but their origins have been retconned several times over the years. Currently, Wanda and Peter aren't even mutants. The little girl in the princess costume is probably Lorna Dayne. She's Erik's daughter in the comics. She has been romantically involved with both Bobby and Alex.

None of the timelines *really* make sense but generally speaking: Original trilogy is one cohesive timeline. Days of Future Past follows First Class just fine and Apocalypse starts to fill in the blanks of what happened in the "good ending" timeline that Logan made but doesn't remember at the end of this one. Which means the new trilogy is also its own cohesive timeline. I think Dark Phoenix is then supposed to continue Apocalypse? But things that happen in it contradict the sneak peek of the future we see in Future Past so it kinda turns into its own standalone (which I doubt was on purpose, someone just didn't care enough) Origins and The Wolverine sandwich the original trilogy neatly. Then Logan is probably technically supposed to continue that, so that the whole Wolverine trilogy takes place in the same universe as the original trilogy. But it could debatably be its own standalone as well. Or possibly imply that the movies are in-universe fiction. Deadpool 1 & 2 were their own continuity but then Deadpool & Wolverine implies it takes place after Logan and in the same timeline. Which, no, doesn't make any sense at all, but whatever. It was a blast of a movie and having fun is all that matters to me when it comes to superhero media tbh. And that's the summary of the X-Men timeline. TLDR: Who cares, the creators certainly didn't, lol. ETA: Dammit! I forgot Deadpool 2 also lowkey implies that its part of the same universe as First Class which means it makes even less sense to take place in Logan's universe. But you know what, I think the Deadpool timeline operates on Who Killed Roger Rabbit rules, aka: It works as long as it's funny.

I understand why folks like the Rogue Cut, given that it's nice to see Rogue, extra scenes are fun, Bobby's second death looks cool, and the parallel scenes of both Eriks walking down a hallway is visually stunning. But, when you watch the movie from beginning to end, the Rogue scenes really slow down the pacing of the movie overall, and cutting back to the future so much (like, a lot more than the theatrical version) distracts from the narrative flow of what the 1973 characters are doing, IMO. Also, I'll never get over the logic problem of needing Rogue because Kitty is hurt and can't keep it up, but there's enough time to fly from China to New York *and back* before Kitty succumbs to her injuries. I don't care how futuristic that jet is; that timing just does not makes sense.

Canon between the first three X-Men films was always very loose, so it can be easier to think of them as their own branches of a common core timeline. Or you could just ignore the inconsistencies between them (the official stance of Fox and, now, Disney) in which case, yes, this movie altered the timeline into a revised timeline, erasing the events of the first X-Men movies. It's not a split timeline, though, the old timeline is gone and replaced with the new one (Marvel has many kinds of time travel, only most of which split the timeline). It's not explicitly stated, but I would think that, knowing Logan would one day wake up with his memory of the new timeline replaced with that of the old timeline, Professor X will have made a backup copy of those memories to give back to him once that happened (with Logan's full knowledge, of course). Logan losing his memory seems to happen to every version of him in every Universe and often multiple times to a single variant, sometimes of his own volition. Sometimes he just goes feral for a decade or two, losing not just his memories, but any semblance of humanity. Eventually, though, his memory always returns (his healing factor does work on his mind, it's just slower than with physical injuries). I _think_ the 2023 version has recovered all of his memories, the last 50 years of which become memories of a timeline that never existed by the end. Assuming Charles gives him back the 50 years of memories from the revised timeline, that would mean that Wolverine finally has _all_ of his memories including double memories of those 50 years (a total of 228 years of memories, most of which are violent and painful, losing nearly everyone he ever cared about).

Okay, as promised, here's the EXTENSIVE breakdown of why this movie is terrible, and the worst of all the X-Men movies. Stick with me. It's a voyage. (I'm too mentally and emotionally exhausted today to focus this into a completely logical and flowing order, so I'm just going to bounce from thing to thing sometimes.) - NOTHING about this movie makes sense. Continuity, plot, ideas, characterization, utilization of characters, storytelling, logical consistency with the franchise, logical consistency with itself, comic accuracy..... Failures across the board. - Right out of the gate, THE THING this story is supposed to be about is an apocalyptic Sentinel war that leads to this dark nightmare future. THAT'S the thing we're fundamentally here to see. That's the promise of this story. Never once do we actually get to see it at all. As much as I love Patrick Stewart narrating things, vaguely TELLING me about an epic terrible nightmarish Sentinel war is NEVER going to be an acceptable substitute for actually SHOWING me the goddamn apocalyptic Sentinel war. It's the most egregious failure of "show, don't tell" that I've ever seen. Or.....didn't see.... That's catastrophically awful storytelling and ESPECIALLY catastrophically awful filmmaking. The wasted spectacle of what we never got to see is fucking MIND BOGGLING. Some of the craziest most iconic stuff in all of X-Men is battling armies of 20+ foot tall giant mutant hunting/kidnapping robots. - The closest we get to seeing proper Sentinels in this movie is when they show us these derpy looking plexiglass Sentinels that look like Dyson vacuum cleaners, and are only like 13 feet tall. And they only give us like 4 of them. That's like a movie where you expect to see like 30x Dwayne "The Rock" Johnsons, and instead you get 3x Peter Dinklages. (Technically Dinklage is 3.5 inches too tall compared to The Rock for the comparison to be perfectly accurate. So actually the disparity is EVEN WORSE.) And seriously, Google "Dyson Ball Animal 2". Tell me these so-called "Sentinels" aren't designed to look like Dyson vacuum cleaners. - The whole plot revolves around getting Mystique's blood. Mystique's blood EXPLICITLY DOES NOT DO the thing that this entire movie's premise is built upon. She's a shapeshifter who can ONLY change her appearance. She CANNOT replicate people's powers. Getting her DNA would only lead to shapeshifting robots AT BEST, not robots capable of copying people's powers. That's a VERY basic fact that they establish MULTIPLE times throughout these movies. (CONTINUED......)

- And THEN I heard they were making a "Rogue Cut"!!! I thought "Wow! Cool. They realized that this movie doesn't make ANY fucking sense, and they're going to do a Rogue Cut. Because.....studio meddling or something must've ruined this movie to make it THIS BAD and complete gibberish. So they're going to go back in and add back in all the Rogue scenes that this movie ORIGINALLY featured, where the whole movie revolves around getting ROGUE'S DNA, because Rogue absolutely DOES have the power to copy people's powers! Wow! That makes so much sense. Hopefully they fix all the other stuff in the process!" But no. Nooooooo. Nope. Not even a little. They didn't fix jack OR shit. They did NOTHING that mattered with Rogue. The whole movie is still fundamentally complete gibberish. What the entire fuck? How does THAT happen? How do you make an entire cut of a movie focused on the EXACT character who could make this plot work, and then literally not do that AT ALL? Is that the weirdest most oblivious coincidence, or is that them intentionally dicking with people? I don't know. It still resulted in a terrible movie. - This movie has goddamn Bishop as a character. Bishop - whose entire shtick is being a time-travelling badass from the future, who has come from the future to change the past, to save the future. THAT'S HIS WHOLE THING. And it's a time travel movie about changing the past to save the future??? SURELY this is going to be fucking awesome, and Bishop is going to be the crucial epic hero to the story, right? What do they do with him? Nothing. He barely says a word. Mostly stands around in the background like furniture til he gets uselessly murdered by these lame-ass so-called "future Sentinels". - The "future Sentinels" are shitty knock-offs of The Destroyer from Thor. Big tall grey robots whose faces open up to shoot lasers? SERIOUSLY? That's JUST The Destroyer, with a much worse character design. They genuinely look like they were trying to wholesale copy The Destroyer, but they were going from memory and all they could remember was a vague scribbled sketch of it. There ARE "future Sentinels" in the comics. In fact there are PLENTY to choose from. There are "regular" future Sentinels, which are like super badass advanced versions of the absolutely iconic modern day Sentinels. ANNNNND, more crucially, there are two iconic major X-Men villains that are "future Sentinels". One is the big, ominous, nearly unstoppable, Hulk-sized, almost seamless, white robot named Nimrod, WHO IS LITERALLY THE MAIN VILLAIN OF THE 'DAYS OF FUTURE PAST' FUTURE in the comics. In DOFP Nimrod is just one singular terrifying unstoppable nightmare robot. But in Bishop's future, Nimrod-series Sentinels are all over the place. Not having Nimrod in this movie is fucking crazy. Not having Bishop and Nimrod battle in this movie is baffling. And if you don't want to use Nimrod, there's an EVEN SCARIER future Sentinel - Bastion. Bastion is Nimrod fused with Master Mold. (Master Mold is 80 foot tall mega Sentinel that manufactures regular 20 foot tall Sentinels in its chest.) Bastion is a Sentinel SO advanced that he seems human. He has the ability to turn organic things into tech, and turn humans into Prime Sentinels - basically they seem human til they're activated, and then they turn into robot "zombies" with Sentinel abilities (lasers, flight, etc), but human sized. He can infect the world with hidden Sentinels. Like WHOA, they had some fucking terrifying options for future Sentinels, and even just the bare bones baseline of a more advanced version of the regular iconic comicbook Sentinel would've been better than these knock-offs of The Destroyer. - Magneto's powers are COMPLETELY inconsistent. The dude is under the Pentagon in a room that is CLEARLY made of rebar-reinforced concrete, and wired up with lights, and just a few feet down a short hallway to a metal elevator...... He's fucking SURROUNDED by metal. He can't escape? Why? The movie pretends he's trapped. In the previous movie we see an entire scene specifically stop and focus on showing us that Magneto learns to control a massive metal radar dish from like 2 miles away. Okay, so MAYBE for some reason I'm supposed to ignore every other movie (given how this movie is incompatible with the facts of every other movie in the franchise, maybe that's a valid argument). Fine, let's ignore Days Of Future Past. Like 15 minute's later IN THIS SAME MOVIE he's levitating a WHOLE FUCKING SPORTS STADIUM, probably at least half the size of the ENTIRE Pentagon itself. - Not the movie's fault, but this movie is one of the last misguided vestiges of depicting Quicksilver as being related to Magneto, because it came out shortly before the comics got rid of that retcon and clarified that Wanda and Pietro aren't related to Magneto AT ALL (and they're not mutants either). (CONTINUED AGAIN......)

- The Quicksilver scene in this movie is AWESOME. Why is it like 30x better than EVERYTHING ELSE in this movie???? It seems like a cameo from a completely different and wildly superior movie. It's so good that it's jarring compared to everything else about this movie. 🤷‍♂ - Naturally, WITH THE ENTIRE FATE OF THE WORLD AND ENTIRE FUTURE AT STAKE, they just break out Magneto and then send Quicksilver home. They send home the ONE character who's SO goddamn fast and powerful that he's basically GUARANTEED to be able to save the day, regardless of what happens. They don't send him to go do something else important. They send him to go home to live in his mom's basement and commit petty crimes for fun. Why. Why? WHY????? Is EVERYONE in this movie on stupid pills? - Halle Berry was in this movie as Storm. You know what they did with Storm? NOTHING. Same thing they did with Ice Man, Sunspot, Colossus, Bishop, and Blink. They used them as background furniture until it was time to unceremoniously kill them off. Storm, Ice Man, Sunspot, and Colossus are SO meaningless that they're basically treated as generic Electric Lady, Ice Guy, Fire Guy, and Metal Guy. Blink at least got to shine A LITTLE BIT, and show off how awesome she is. Like WTF? Why have all these iconic characters and do basically NOTHING worthwhile with them. Why bother even paying Halle Berry for this? - These are NOT Kitty Pryde's powers. Sending Wolverine's mind through time? What the shit????? You have literal Charles Xavier sitting RIGHT THERE. If you're gonna give someone weird mind powers, why not Xavier? Kitty's powers are just walking through walls. What THE FUCK happened here? Kitty is supposed to be the time travelling hero of the DOFP storyline, so it's nice they included her, but like THIS???? You have actual literal time traveler Bishop, and HE'S not involved in the time travel? He could've brought some sort of "Time Cerebro" from the future to upgrade Xavier to send people back in time to their old bodies. He could've just handed Wolverine a time travel device. He could've brought time travel devices for Wolverine AND Kitty, so she could go be the hero of the story too, and we finalyl get a Wolverine and Kitty story (Wolverine constantly ends up in an "adopted father"/mentor role for young girls - Jubillee, Rogue, Kitty, X-23, etc. It's his lot in life. They just always see him as a father figure/mentor/protector and gravitate towards him). Kitty is historically kinda the one who is like his MAIN sidekick, and she's arguably THE most important person in his life. Like he REALLY sees her as his daughter. Even moreso than X-23 or any of his other kids. - Mystique is Sherlock Holmes. Literally. In the Marvel Universe, Raven Darkholme was born in the 1800s (or potentially earlier), and during the Victorian Era she took on the form of a man and became the World's Greatest Detective - Sherlock Holmes. The most legendary master of logic and reason. Her lover/wife, Destiny/Irene Adler (who shares the name of Sherlock's ONLY notable love interest) wrote down and sold all of the tales of their cases, depicting herself as both love interest Irene Adler AND his partner Dr. John Watson, and publishing the stories under the name Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Mystique has one of the most awesome backstories in all of Marvel. Not only did First Class completely ruin her backstory by making her some radon stray orphan girl who shows up and lives with Xavier, in DOFP they make her a full-blown complete moron. Two of the people she knows best, who she knows are archenemies and don't work together anymore, AND A GUY WHO IS LITERALLY FROM THE FUTURE, have all teamed up to tell her to knock it off and NOT destroy the entire future. ......and she doesn't have the tiny shred of common sense it would take to go "Wait, if THESE two are teaming up and agreeing on this, AND there's literally a guy from the future who knows ho bad I fuck everything up, clearly I SHOULDN'T do this?" How dumb can a character be? - Also, JLaw phoned it in. She CLEARLY didn't want to be in this movie. The Mystique make-up looks godawful, and Jlaw seems bored and flat the whole movie. MOST of the actual acting from "Mystique" comes when she's transformed into other characters. (CONTINUED AGAIN AGAIN, one last time.......)

- Now this isn't THIS movie's fault, technically (more just an indication of how utterly half-assed these movies are), but Wolverine's fate at the end of this movie, where he's pulled out of the river by Stryker, but really it's Mystique, doesn't match up or make sense with the next movie AT ALL. - Why send Wolverine to a time when Mystique is hard to find and unreasonable? You can send Wolverine anywhere to anywhen. Why not send him to a time when he can easily reason with Mystique and explain the situation to her? Or send him to a time/place where she's unconscious and helpless, and killing her is easy. OR just send him to YEARS before it becomes a pressing matter. Why send him to a time and place where she's hostile, hard to find, and it's a race against the clock? That's IMPOSSIBLY fucking dumb. - The ending pigeonholes the entire rest of this franchise. We see all these characters alive, well, and happy, so now either: 1. None of those characters can died or be meaningfully hurt for the rest of the franchise, because they all survive happy and healthy til 2014 OR 2. The franchise IMMEDIATELY becomes an even WORSE incoherent clusterfuck that makes no attempt to make any coherent sense. Guess which one they go with! - This entire movie only existed as an attempt at franchise maintenance - trying to clean up the time line mess that was X-Men Origins Wolverine. All this movie did was make the mess MUCH worse. - It's supposedly been a decade+ since the previous movie, and these actors have only aged like 2 years. This series keeps going like this. Every movie is a decade later. 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s..... Attempting to close the loop and meet back up at the original X-Men movie that these movies are supposed to be prequels to. Dark Phoenix is supposed to be set 40+ years after First Class, but the actors have only aged 8 years. X-Men is set in 2000. So Xavier and Magneto have to age like 40 years in the remainder of the 90s to suddenly somehow become Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan. They've made ZERO attempt to try and make that make ANY amount of sense. ........ I'm 90% sure I'm forgetting some stuff, but that's a lot of it. I don't care enough about this movie to actually hate it, but this is the only movie I've ever been mad at while watching it in a movie theater. This movie is just really REALLY bad and really REALLY dumb. Like I don't think I'm asking THAT MUCH to expect basic logic, and to see the iconic giant robots wreck the mutant population in the event that the whole story is supposed to be about preventing. Those feel like EXTREMELY basic expectations, no?

1. We do get to see Mutants fight Sentinels in multiple scenes 2. You misunderstood what her blood was for. Her DNA was not used to be put into Sentinels so they can "change" powers. Her blood was the key to understand how this process of adapting works. Her DNA had the ability to change into something else. That was what made them learn how to replicate that. And not easy peasy. It was still hard work and years of research afterwards. Which you can see by the fact that in the 70s they looked like Dysons as you described it. 3. Magneto could have easily broke out of the Pentagon but there was no need for him. He didnt break out of his glass prison in the og trilogy either did he? He is playing metaphorical chess. Not football. He is patiently waiting. 4. You can not blame the movie for relating Quicksilver to Magneto if the comics retconned it AFTER it came out. And even if. Comics contradict themselves all the time. There are still a million comics where tjey are related. 5. They send Quicksilver home bc they literally dont need him anymore. All they need are Erik and Charles. Their plan is to convince Mystique to change her mind. What was Quicksilver gonna do? Convince her but fast? 6. In the Comicstory it is Kitty who travels back in time. They wanted to give her that power and be the hero to pay hommage to that. Also: The movies are inspired by the comics. Its been like this since the dawn of comicbook cinema. They are NOT the same as the comics. If the movieuniverse decides to give Kitty a new power they damn well have the right to.

KL - I'm going to post what is likely an unpopular opinion now. I would enjoy if you would watch The New Mutants. Setting aside any debates as to its quality, it is technically part of the continuum and deserves to take its place. And to those who think it sucks, remember: sometimes, a reaction to a bad movie can be as entertaining as a reaction to a good movie.

When I first watched this movie I loved it so much for all the sequels. The comics takes place after Dark Phoenix comics. Dark Feonix ended at Uncanny X-Men comic 128. Days of Future Past was comic 129 and 130. I have Dark Phoenix comics and Days of Future Past comics as well but they are not that name in the comics
