I don't know if you are reading this but if I could remake Bioman, here's what I would do: I would keep the first 10 episodes the same as I assume they introduce the show, characters and villains and are fresh for that time. Like you suggested, the Biomen would refuse to replace Yellow Four but, in the next episode, realise they need too. The next 2 episodes would also play out the same. In Episode 14, there would be a bounty hunter from space who tries to kill the BIomen but fails (no mech battle). The following episode would be another with the Big 3 but after that Doctor Man decides to start sending other monsters instead for the next 3 episodes but since they do even worse and are a waste of resources he decides to keep the Big 3. Episodes 19 and 20 would also play out the same. The episode after would be when the Big 3 decide to assasinate Doctor Man. Taking your suggestion, during that episode they try to kill Bioman themselves. At the end of the next episode, after another fight, Doctor Man returns to laugh at them. Then, the following episode Silva appears. His first 2 episodes would play out the same but the episode after the Biomen decide to train after yet another fight with him and do so throughout the next episode before finally defeating him. The episode after would be the one where they fight ghosts. Then, Shota Yamomori's episodes would also play out the same. The following episode, Zyuoh would be killed in battle. Monster tries to avenge his friend next episode but is also killed. For the next 2 episodes, the (former) Big 3 are killed off along with Farrahcat. Doctor Man creates a new Big 3 but they only just manage to escape the battle. The episode after, Shota returns to help them defeat the new Big 3. For the next 4 episodes, the remaining Beastnoids are killed off one by one. Doctor Man then realises that if he wants the Biomen killed he must do it himself and so in the next episode finally faces them. After a fight with them, clinging to life, he summons the final mech but he and his mech are destroyed, ending the series.

Fun fact about that, Dr Man’s story is similar to Master Orgs. Dr Man went on to play the Emperor in Dairanger and then his costume ended up being used for Master Org in Wild Force.

I personally think Bioman's ost is some of the best I've heard in a Sentai series. I'm a sucker for electronic 80's synth sounds. I will agree though that some of the tracks were used at the wrong times.

Nothing wrong with liking it. I do like some of the music, it's just that nothing stands out to me on its own compared to other shows. Usually I rate the soundtrack of something based on what tracks I can recall in my head days later.

Surprised you didn't like the opening theme. It's one of my favorite sentai opening themes, although I do agree it's not the best when used in battle. Sad to hear the show is a bit formulaic and doesn't have much of a gripping plot, and I was also surprised to see that you missed mentioning the search to find the lost American pilot episode of the show, (Bio-Man) or the dub from the Philippines. I'll admit, it was odd that when I got to watching your winspector review this one came out the next day. Makes me hopeful that you'll do a review for GAVAN, Spielvan or Solbrain, or maybe even TurboRanger, if any of those have full subs. I know Gavan does

Lost American pilot? Never found anything on that. I know Saban tried to bring Bioman over but it failed. Did he actually create a pilot? As for the dubs, I usually don't talk about them. Nothing against them though. My next Metal Heroes show will be Solbrain as I have to start watching that this month in order to talk about it at my panel at NDK in a few weeks. I'll most likely tackle Gavan next year unless B-Fighter is subbed in full before then. Not sure if Spielvan has been subbed. Turboranger has only had its first 7 episodes subbed, so it is going to be a long time before I get to that one. I will tell you right now, if the sub version ends up anything like the raws I watched years ago, it is going to probably be a 1/5 star rating.

Yeah, the lost media wiki has an article on Bio-Man because they actually completed a pilot like the Cybertron one but it's lost in some storage. They even just found the promo art for it this year so they're getting somewhat close!

Granted Bioman was popular in France, they followed up with Bioman2 which was really Maskman. In the end Saban was given a shot to bring Super Sentai to America and in the long run hit pay dirt.

I do do research on the series I review, hence why I talk about the production side if there is any information available, but for some reason I already had it in my head that Bioman was the first show to kill off a ranger. Thus, I would have never looked that up otherwise anyway.

I've already done tons of research on the franchise years ago. However, I have tried to avoid details on every little thing for the series I have not watch as I do want to go into them without knowing everything about them. I think I did confuse the first female Sentai death and first death as a whole though. Nevertheless, oh well, it's not my first mistake and it most certainly won't be the last.

I just finished watching Bioman yesterday and after watching your video. I FLAT OUT DISAGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!! First off I enjoyed nearly every single episode since a majority of them are either 2 parts or are single episodes that challenge the Bioman both mentally and physically. And due to the series already being 20 minutes I was able to watch all of them In just 4 DAYS! (And they were a pure joy!) Second I also disagree with you on the characters and the battles. Since nearly every single character is given a huge amount of time on screen and I enjoyed the villains just as much as I like the Heros. None of them felt One dimensional and that's due to the Mech battles. because unlike the other super sentai series it allows us to actually see the Big 3 actually do stuff and not just standing around barking orders. and It gives a real reason for having mech battles since they always felt like there were there to pad out episodes or to sell toys. so I like that the formula was different for this one. Heck, I even Silva I like since he's like a hard random anime encounter like in an RPG since the Bioman barely survives against him. Third I Absolutely adore the music! Especially the main theme since I never skip It. and I love all of the none mech battles since there was always the theme playing in the background most of the time. and I found all of the effects and fights to be convincing. (Though It maybe because I was only able to watch the episodes in 240P.) And Lastly, I disagree with you saying that there is no emotion since I found nearly every episode has some sort of theme tied to human emotion. The greatest example being Doctor Man, since while we don't see him leaving the base leaving that often, we know that he what's an heir to the throne and when he discovers his lost son Shuichi he goes out of his way In disguise and realizes that it's his son, and he tries to have him join the empire but his son refuses. And due to that he still has a human heart, The Big 3 then tries to kill him only to realize that they destroyed a clone. and Doctor Man erases there memories and we actually see them terrified of them having their memories erased. and latter on Doctor Man makes himself fully mechanical just so he would not have any human emotions. which makes the finally a true highlight for me since by the end Shuichi wants his father to come back but there was nothing he could do and when he blows up. (I felt that.) So No! I didn't find this show to be boring. Since I found this series to be Fantastic from being to end. sure there where at times where It kinda drags it's feet especially at the middle and latter part. But there was not a single episode I disliked. and I enjoyed every single character to even the minor characters. to the mech battles, to the main battles, The Themes, And especially The main Theme song. This show is EASILY A 5 out 5 grown-ups in spandex if you ask me. (But hey it's understandable. cuz I'm glad that I really enjoyed it for the past 4 days.)

I partially grade a show based on how many episodes I can marathon at one time and I found myself unable to get through more than 3-4 episodes in a sitting as opposed to the 12 I recently did with Denziman. Easy episodes 46 - 51. Because it felt like a 5 part finally. And to me it felt very good since I got to know a lot about the heroes and villains. And to me that's all I want. In a show. I'm glad that I discovered your videos. And I can't wait for you to review return of ultraman. ❤I love Bioman.👍

Funny how harsh you are on the one person on the show who actually had a long and storied career as a martial arts film actress. Yukari Oshima was pretty much as Prolific in HK Cinema as Jackie Chan was in the late 80s/90s. Pretty harsh on the whole series as a whole. This was also the first sentai series to make it out west (at least in europe) which led to interest in other sentai shows. I wouldn't rank it at the top but yea I think 2 stars is too low especially for how it grew the fandom

Fair enough, but I've seen so many Sentai series that I just found this one to be flat out boring. I give it credit for trying something new, I just felt it failed extremely hard. When I find myself not wanting to watch like 10 episodes in one sitting, there is something wrong, especially when I could barely make it through two at a time. As for Yukari Oshima, she wasn't even really a character as she had no arcs, no stories, she was just there. I can't give praises to her when she did absolutely nothing but fight.

Well, I did see it in the late 90's as a kid so I might be seeing it through a different lens. To a lot of people these shows were their introduction to martial arts and as you mentioned in your other reviews, choreography matters. I think regardless of the lack of arcs for her characters you can see some effort in the stuntwork and as a fan of martial arts in tv and cinema it's a good thing to see. Not trying to invalidate your opinions, just want to give a different perspective. You've actually convinced me to buy this set and revisit the series as an adult (Only way I've seen this is through rebroadcasts on bad dubs sometime in the late 90s / early aughties). Looking forward to seeing your other reviews

May I ask what you would've done to improve this show, particularly in the field of character development?

Well like I said in the review, I would have added more backstories to the characters. Show us a few of the rangers' families. Show us what made red become an astronaut. What his dreams would have been had Dr Man not attacked at the time he was going to go out into space. Hell, I don't even think that is ever mentioned beyond the first few minutes of the first episode. They could have also gone into more on how pink was a sickly child and what she did to overcome that. For the villains, after it is believed that Dr Man has been assassinated, it should have been a full on arc, developing the stories behind the three generals on their creation and what led them to kill their creator. Have them fail for several episodes, realizing they are nothing without him, which is when Dr Man returns laughing at his minions and praising them for learning their place in life. I also would have done more multipart stories and not every battle would have a mech battle.

It’s okay. My cousin growing up in the 80’s corrected me that Tommy and Burai are not the first sixth ranger in power ranger or super sentai. The first sixth ranger is in Bioman. I grow up watching power ranger and super sentai in the 90’s starting with both Zyuranger and Mighty Morphin Power Ranger. So I was misinformed.

Lack of character development, the villains were meh, and the fights just weren't all that exicitiing to watch. I found myself struggling to binge more than 2-3 episodes at a time, which to me determines whether I'm enjoying a show or not. Usually I can watch anywhere from 5-10 episodes in a sitting.

for suspense purposes, if i were to remake bioman it wouldve been that they dont immediately find yellow four replacement. make the search more challenging and i wouldve wanted also for dr man’s evil empire to insert a fake yellow four before eventually the true yellow four jun emerges. youre right she just died in the previous episode then the following episode her replacement emerges. crazy.

If I were to remake Bioman, I would coincide the death of the original Yellow Four with the initial defeat of some of the Beastnoids which required them to be upgraded including the Big Three, maybe have it coincide as well with the arrival of Silva. I would also place it at the midway point in the series so that we have a great run with the original character, something huge and game changing happens at the midway point in the series for all parties, and it makes her death more impactful. Also, the necessity of needing a replacement Yellow Four should have more weight to it. In addition, maybe foreshadow who Yellow four is in an earlier episode by saying she's the original Yellow Four's cousin or younger sister. It then would make sense that this girl also has the Bio particles in her genes. It also creates some lingering issues over whether this new yellow four is simply a replacement that can't live up to her sister's memory or does she decide to be her own person and honor her sisters memory. Also, The death if Yellow Four should be at the hands of maybe Silva. I don't know, I kinda like the idea of the team being nearly destroyed by the combined effort, but it's the original Yellow Four that sacrifices herself to weaken the enemy. Have the new Yellow Four have a initial motivation to get revenge on both Dr Man and Silva for the death of Her predecessor.

While I applaud Bioman for doing something different with the 'monster of the week' concept, I have to say it was to me it's biggest weakness, as Bioman always performs their finishers on the same monsters over and over again, I'm like what is the point as it doesn't even kill them. There's even a few episodes where they try to make a more powerful finisher, which they again use on the same monsters over and over, and it still doesn't kill them, and really what is the point!

Despite its somewhat formulaic nature, this is one of my favorite Sentais from the mid 80s. And I love the opening theme and closing themes. And Bio Hunter Silva's theme is straight up badass. I loved that there was a team of generals and lieutenants that fought the team rather than a monster of the week. It made things a lot interesting overall having a steady set of recurring threats rather than some throwaway monsters.

7:27 I have two theories on that and one you may think I'm crazy. Maybe she had ties to the Yokuza and that's why we don't hear about her or two maybe is a real Yokai like a Kitsuna and that's why. 16:15 is it just me or can anybody else see these two goof balls being in G.I. Joe and/or Transformers because they look like characters from those shows? But then again Toei was working on half the animation with the American studio on both at the time. 23:10 LOOK OUT GAMERA!

I've just finished reviewing Bioman for my Super Sentai Marathon and it is just as great as I remembered it. As watching this after the previous seasons really made me really like the changes it did such as adding a 2nd female member to the team, the improved fight choreography and Mech battles as this was the very first season for me where a lot of the Mech battles played out differently which definitely helped preventing them from feeling stale and predictable like with the 5 previous seasons. I love the dark feel and tone as it was noticeably more darker compared to the precious shows but without undermining the silliness. I really enjoyed themes such as Humanity vs Technology, and the villains were great too with Dr. Man probably being my favorite Main villain in these showa era seasons. Not only that but this season has actual story arcs that span over multiple episodes and so the filler is dramatically reduced, but the filler episodes where still interesting enough as they focus on each member of the team. Making this one of the few rare Sentai Shows from the showa era where I found myself enjoying nearly episode. And the show very much feels like it came out from the 1980’s where as some of the previous seasons still felt like they were influenced by the 70’s. And watching this after the seasons that prodded it only made me appreciate it even more. I maybe wouldn’t say it’s the most perfect season as the main heroes are still kinda like the previous teams in that they remain the same from start to finish, and the show kinda drags in a few places. But other than that I found Bioman to be a very strong season, and it’s easily my favorite season of Super Sentai from the showa era so far. So I’m really looking forward to Changeman to see if it will be just as good or not!

While zyuranger ran for 43 to 44 episode that was with there version of the introduction of the green zyuranger being a six episode store ark. Versus the Americanized green with evil storey ark which was condensed down to 5 episodes.

Oops by bad I have not 100% watched all of zyuranger since 2016. The american dubb is about ten episodes longer at 60 episode if you dont count count the first shot original version of day of the dumpster that was not aired original because test audiences had issues with . The American dub follows the story of the original sentia store the parts they did not flat out censor our remove but told it drastically different order chronological from the original zyuranger from the majority it that was can up till episode after doomsday. I got to say zyuranger has one of the boldest darkest most sad and depressing finale plot twist explaining why bandora became the way she is. Which there was no way in heck saban was keeping that in the american dubb .Saban even cut out that the Goldar and scorpina characters were dam married in the original zyuranger. Which I think could of been kept in might morphine season 1 and still kept the story acceptable for an American child audience. Excluding of the screen beasality bit we don’t see in the original sentia.

Probably not. Not because I have anything against collaborations, I just don't think a TV series review in my style would work with a collab. If EZ Rider is ever up for a collab though, perhaps even on just the Dynaman parody dub, then I'd have no problem with it. In fact, I'd be willing to collab with nearly any Kaiju/Toku reviewers that are open to it (and I've already done a couple of things with The Kaijuologist).

Yes... someday... hopefully this year. I think. :-) Well, I want to, but right now I've got a lot already, so Black is probably going to end up much later. To be honest, I didn't plan on doing Dyna, Bio, Change, and Winspector when I planned Black. Plus, with the school year starting back up next week, things are going to slow down. I've gotta work on my NDK panels first, then Battle in Outer Space for hitting 2000 subscribers (which I will probably hit in the next few days), then I need to start on Halloween Month's videos so I can have at least one video a week in October. Lastly, I need to start watching SOlbrain for my NDK panel, so that will probably be my next Toku review depending on the Dyna subs. Yeah, it is a lot. I really do want to watch Black though.

Kaiju no Kami True Dairanger was a very solid show, so was kakuranger. Also I wanna thank you for getting me to relize how good of a show dairanger is, because when I first saw the show i didnt really think much of it and thought it was just ok. That was until I saw your review and you pointed out all the aspects of the show, I didn't notice and came to appreciate after rewatching it. However, I still find Ryu's story with his father a little rush.

I definitely do wish they fleshed out the bit with Ryo's father more, but they probably didn't have time to do so since these shows have to be written and filmed really quickly. Thus, Toei has a lot of generic scripts that can be used for any Sentai show, they just need to write in the characters. It's the reason why we always see a yearly idol episode or a fake wedding one, etc.

Kaiju no Kami I always thought that Goggle V and Dynaman were pretty obscure and unpopular in the community but I'll admit that the only 80s sentai I have ever seen is Liveman (it was my first sentai so I may have a positive bias towards it but I really enjoyed it).

I haven't seen Goggle V yet, but the group subbing it is almost done, so I might give it a watch next year. Dynaman is a blast though. It still has some issues like no development for the rangers, but the episodes are fun and energetic.

I’m writing this comment about an hour after finishing my rewatch of Bioman. A few years back I had watched Bioman and my opinion of the show was very negative. However, after rewatching the show my opinion has definitely changed in a more positive direction. I’m gonna list IMO the shows pros and cons. Pros: -Jun is great, she’s honestly the best ranger in the show just because she gets fleshed out way more than the others and she usually has the best focus episodes. Plus the episode with her old olympic trainer was great. Seeing her sacrifice her dream of being in the olympics to be a hero was great. Also her dynamic and interactions with Hikaru are great especially considering this was the first series to do it. -The overall lore of the show is really interesting. Soda clearly took a page out of Denziman and expanded on it by making it an actual focus in the show. -Doctor Man, despite his ridiculous name, is one of the most well written villain leaders in Sentai. Not only was it refreshing to have a villain leader who gets his backstory revealed in the middle half instead of the tail end of the show and I absolutely adored the storyline with Suichi and Go’s father and the way his arc ends on an ambiguous note making it up to the viewers if he truly redeemed himself in the end. -The lack of motw was also refreshing to see. I enjoyed the aspect of having the generals carry out the plans of the episode rather than sending out a motw. And the mechs that replaced the motw were also great. Not only did they have some pretty amazing designs but they give off terminator vibes with the serious killer robot vibe they give off. -The mech battles in Bioman were entertaining to watch. Majority of the time the actually play a role in the plot and we actually get some pretty good camera angles and directing in a lot of the fights. None of the fights ever felt repetitive the way other Showa mech fights are. -Silva, while it is undeniable there was room for improvement in his writing, was still entertaining nonetheless. I love how in every one of his appearances he just comes in and says ‘you know what? Fuck it. Imma go be a dick to the Bioman just for fun’. -The overall drama of Bioman is leagues ahead of every show that came before. I think the writing truly shines here the most in creating compelling drama in the series. -Monster and Juo are an absolute treat of duo. I think anyone who has seen Bioman can’t deny that these 2 are fun characters. Seriously any episode that focuses on these 2 is always going to be a fun ride. Cons: -Every main character in this show is heavily under characterized. Go only really gets fleshed in the last 2 arcs when his father is introduced. Shingo and Ryuuta both feel like archetypes rather than actual characters. Shingo is the ladies guy archetype while Ryuuta is the funny guy archetype except both of them kinda fail at being that. Hikaru does get some good standout moments in the show but for the most part she’s either crying or getting beat around by the villains whenever Jun isn’t around. Pebo is useless for most of the show as he never really does anything other than info dumping and upgrading the Bioman’s tech in the training arc and he was absolutely insufferable in episode 7 because of how much of a brat he acted. I’ll at least give him props for growing a pair of balls to face Silva during his introduction arc. -While I praised Doctor Man and Monster, Mason and Farah were just boring. Mason was sort of interesting when he wasn’t showing blind loyalty to Doctor Man but after he was reprogrammed I lost any sort of interest in his character. Farah left little impression on me which is pretty disappointing considering Zenobia was great in the season prior. -Mika, just Mika -Any episode that isn’t advancing the plot, focusing on Jun/her dynamic with Hikaru, or has Monster and Juo as the main villains is soooooo boring. Especially in the episodes before Jun was introduced when Mika was still around were hard to sit through because of how boring they were. Not to mention the wasted potential in not making the episodes after Mika’s death and when the big 3 betray Doctor Man an arc was disappointing. Overall I’d give Bioman anywhere between a 3.5-4/5 G.U.I.S. The show just has too many issues that hold it back from its full potential. As for my favorite episode, it’s a toss up between Silva’s introduction arc, the episodes with Shouta, and the episodes where Go’s father is introduced.

Apprently, the whole decedents thing came from the original concept where the rangers were meant to be descendents of Japanese folklore characters. But then news of Biotechnology at the time led to the more sci fi approach the series had Also originally planned was for a cyborg hero type character, but that was changed to Bio Hunter Silva (aka the most badass sentai villain of the Showa era)

The original yellow four actress left the show when she found out she was pregnant. She left tp have her baby and get married and I think decided to retire as an actress to focus on her family.

This is the best Sentai Series ever!!! Next is Maskman!!! Was able to meet Pink 5 last year and excited to go back to Japan. Whatever you say, Bioman will be forever ingrained to us kids in the 80’s in the Philippines. And of course, their merch and toys are highly collectible here.

Funny how Dr. Man is Professor Bias-lite years before Liveman was a thing. And on a sadder note, I have a negative history with this season. Two years ago I did a lets read of a Super Sentai and Power Rangers crossover fan fiction. In addition to the author not bothering to hide his preference of Sentai over Power Rangers, to the point characters from the later would say on multiple occasions "You Sentai guys are so much better than us" he was also a big fan of this season, talking it up like it was one of the true greats of the franchise. But worst of all, Jason and Trini were Rangers characters that made it into the story, and the author rewrote their personalities to make them clones of Shiro and Mika. Why he turned Jason into Shiro II I can only guess at, but I do know why he changed Trini into Mika II. Are you ready for this? It’s because both Mika, and Trini’s actress Thuy Trang died. That’s right, he tried to equate the death of a real person and the death of a fictional character because of the actor’s departure from the show, and tried to pass it off as a Gokaiger style TRIBUTE! Learning other people find it merely boring instead of solid gold like the fan fiction author is just a bonus at this point.

Spoiler warning for previous seasons wasn’t bio yell the third ranger to be killed of in the series. However she the only female ranger killed of in the Japanese dubb. Excluding Spoiler for lost galaxy the first English ginga pink Ranger was only killed in the America dubb because she had the disease that killed l Jim Henson. She recovered but it was literally not till the American finale episode that why she randomly comes back to life and reappears during the last couple of minutes.
