Kaiser High School

In the ahupuaʻa of Maunalua, which lies in the moku of Kona here on Oʻahu, stands the home of the cougars.
We are talking about Kaiser High School.
Repping the colors of blue and gold, Kaiser High School was named after the gentleman who developed the area.
Arriving in Hawaiʻi in the mid-1950s, industrialist and self-made tycoon Henry Kaiser continued his already successful career.
In 1961, after obtaining a lease from landowner Bishop Estate for thousands of acres in the area traditionally known as Maunalua, Henry Kaiser began to build, even dredging and filling in portions of Kuapā Pond which was the largest ancient fishpond in Hawaiʻi.
The subdivision development was named Hawaiʻi Kai.
In 1971, following the passing of Kaiser, Henry J Kaiser High School was founded.
The development name “Hawaiʻi Kai” continues to be used today, but that name only takes us back a few decades.
When we use its traditional name of “Maunalua,” that takes us back generations.
The name Maunalua means “two mountains” and it speaks of two peaks in the area.
Today, they are nicknamed Koko Head and Koko Crater.
The first of the two mountains is what is incorrectly known today as “Koko Head.”
What is actually “Koko Crater,” Kōhelepelepe, its traditional name, also known as Puʻu Maʻi, stands today as the second most popular hike on Oʻahu.
It’s actually the remnants of an old railroad and bunkers that were built by the United States government during World War II.
Koko Head is actually the southernmost point of the ahupuaʻa.
Traditionally named Kawaihoa, meaning “the companionʻs water,” Koko Head is the boundary to one end of Maunalua Bay, while Kūpikipikiʻō, known today as Black Point, stands as the other boundary.
