Nice video.. Fun fact -> deer are almost color blind; they check for movement. This is why they shake their heads.. The brain compairs the "pictures" and tries to find out, if something changed.. You can use any color.. Greetings from Germany

Thanks for taking time to explain the saddle.. hunted for many years and used about every kind of stand but never considered using a saddle until I watched this.. I’m definitely going to look into it.. I think it would be great for those times when it’s a very long walk to where you’re hunting.

I second this. Your taking it in anyway. Maybe a notch quickie on the tether and if you hit branches trow the lineman belt around till you move the tether past the branch?

Only thing I do differently is I have a automatic bow retriever hooked to my backpack and then bow. So as you pull backpack up it let's lime out so you can retrieve bow afterwards. One less rope to tangle on the ground works great.

i used to use sticks but after i started climbing trees for work a few years ago i started using the blakes hitch to get into trees. all i carry is my platform and bow and saddle. its not the best for blind hunts because i go out and put paracord in the trees i want to hunt pre season so i can just pull my rope up easily and not mess with a throwball in the dark which would be not fun to do lol. all together my setup doesnt weight much at all. main reason i do this though is because i only hunt public ground and i somtimes have to walk over a mile with big ravines i have to go up and down and less weight makes it so much easier. great video though looks like you have your system very well thought out. i might start bringing a pad like that cause thats a great idea.

Those Tethrd Fold and Go's works great as a shooting rail. I keep one on each side of the tree while gun hunting.

Good stuff your sharing, Kaitlyn! Paying attention to the details, and sharing with folks, is nice! Been using a saddle, original Anderson tree sling since 1984, that my Bride bought me! Fear of heights was the driving factor, and it was the best piece of equipment Ive had for tree stand hunting. Recently purchase newer saddles that a great, along with practicing the JRB Tree Climbing system. Safe, no slack, system. Check his site out, he has techniques for all types of tree stand hunters! If you don't mind the extra weight, get the jx3. It's the most comfortable saddle on the market. Also if you would attach the orange rope to you instead of the tree, then you would only have one rope to move up the tree

You have to loop it around the tree when you start or you can't pull everything up and let it hang right away

Great video Kaitlyn! If you'll allow me to suggest anything, use a linemans on the way up, it'll speed things up for your climb, rather than constantly readjusting and taking the load off the hitch

Hey Kaitlyn thanks for making this video. I just bought my first saddle and excited to give it a try. I hate heights with a passion and usually only use 2/3 of the extensions on ladder stands 😂😂 I see some people with fear of heights do better with saddles so I want to give it a go. Do you mind me asking how u fell at one point?

I fell because I climbed down to go pee, took the saddle off to do so, and didn't put it back on to pull my sticks. Practice using it from the ground first and you'll learn to really like them!

I hope I can get into some trees that have trunks that bifurcate. That with some back cover im hoping to stay around 10-12 ft and work my way up higher with time.

Yea I knew better, but I was in a hurry. Bad excuse lol. But nice I hope you like it. It took me about 8 full hunts to get super comfortable with it and learning what worked for me. If you have cover, 12ft is plenty high

Yo Kaitlyn. Ditch the sticks, go 2TC you are already putting two tethers on the tree. You will loose a bunch of gear weight. Good video

Great video Kid !! That was very informative. Just one thing I want to touch on about your tree selection. I may be wrong but I believe your are in Michigan? You really want to be extra cautious when you select your tree. I may be mistaken but it looked like you were in an Ash tree, if not my bad. However if I am correct then you really need to be cautious about being in an Ash tree because of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). If you are not familiar with that particular invasive species then you really need to educate yourself on it and the effects that they have on the Ash trees in your area and the areas you hunt. I believe there are like 36 states that are currently infested with EAB. I am a utility arborist and I am quite familiar with EAB. I just want to keep you and everyone safe when/while aloft in trees. If you can do one thing for me PLEASE at least look into EAB and the effects they have on the structural integrity of the tree...Just want to keep you safe so you can keep creating great content.. Ash trees make great trees to hunt in, unless they are dead from the border which will be clear from the lack of leaves in the tree, prolly not smart to hunt in any dead tree, genius

I look at all the equipment and wonder if there is a weight savings. Additionally, hanging on the side of the tree, even though you walk yourself to the opposite side of the tree as a deer approaches, well, I doubt the efficacy. Each her own, of course. Saddle hanging isn't for me. But thanks.

You can definitely simplify your set up way more than I do it. It's great for public land when you want to be mobile, but I do use lock ons for my permanent sets

One comment. Undoing your carabiner to clip your camera is not safe. You should never unclip your carabiner. Why not add another carabiner to secure the camera. One that is not part of your safety equipment. Another thing. If you want to get higher, there is no need to bring 5 or 6 climbing sticks. Just add aiders to your sticks. You might find you need 5 - 6 stick height when you get to the tree and only brought 4, or vice versa. Aiders give you the option without the extra weight of 1 - 2 extra sticks.

PLEASE READ THIS: Ascenders are not fall arrest devices. You shouldn't be climbing with them and putting slack in them like that. If you fall they could cut your rope, especially an 8mm rope. They are perfectly fine on a lineman's belt or on your tether when standing on your platform. I strongly recommend a belay device or friction hitch to climb the way you are demonstrating. Personally, I would just use a belay device on that orange rope you got, and just use it to climb. Ditch the loop and tie a triple lock carabiner on it for when you have to go around a branch. If your sticks give our or if you slip off one, you could just rappel down to the ground. I don't want you to get hurt again or anyone else to get hurt. I'm confused why you think ascenders aren't good to use? They're literally built for climbing. I never said they are 100% fall proof but neither is anything. Anything can technically break or go wrong. That's why you inspect your equipment. I do see your point on the belay though. This is just how I do it

When you put slack in your line climbing up you create a scenario in which you can slip and fall a long way and generate more force than it's rated for (shock loading). There's better ways to climb that are much safer

@@KaitlynMausOutdoors Your method is okay. The ascender + 8mm tether combo you are using to climb is where the danger lies. Just use a friction hitch with a tender or a device like a Madrock Safeguard in place of the ascender. It only takes about 4-6kn for an ascender to shred 8 to11 mm rope. If you fall from even with your anchor point (factor 1 fall) or above your anchor point (factor 2 fall) you could hit that number even if you don't have a whole lot of slack in your line due to the static nature of the fall. Slack is our number one enemy when going up a tree. That said, by all means, use your ascender on your tether on your platform to position yourself. I weigh 200#. You won't ever catch me on anything less than 9.5mm rope. My tether and lineman's belts are 11mm, and I use a Ropeman 1 on those. My rappel rope is 9.5mm. I mainly use a Madrock Safeguard on it.
