Here's a short video of a mini kata (Kaizen dai) that I put together for my intermediate students. It's built around the same hand positioning concept that I made instructional videos on in 2015 (Project 16: Hand positioning 1 and Hand positioning 2 can be found at www.gumroad.com/ante). Here you can see a simplified and compact version containing the most important techniques and principles from the whole concept.
The video also includes a functional application for each move, so that various habitual acts of physical violence can be addressed, while at the same time becoming familiar with the different hand positions (in relation to the attacker) that you can find yourself in. In the video you can also find training methods that will help you to put the techniques into a more realistic context.
It seems to be harder and harder for people, especially the younger generation, to memorise longer sequences. With smartphones, "all" information is in your palm with a few clicks, so there is less of a need to remember things. This obviously means exercising your brain less (or at least differently) than before. With this in mind, I think there is a need for really short kata, that are not too overwhelming for those in the beginning of their martial arts journey.
With the covid19 pandemic, it has become even more important to have something simple enough, that also beginners can do on their own.
