Here's the fourth kata (Jiyu dai ni) in my mini kata series, that I created for my beginning students.
In the previous three videos (Kihon sho, Kaizen sho and Jiyu dai ichi) I've made an effort to link the applications to moves that can be found in traditional karate kata. This time form follows function, so the moves are not that easy to recognise. The kata has moves that can be hard to grasp without first learning the corresponding application with a partner. Even if the applications are fairly simple, the kata in itself is more suitable for intermediate students.
The beginner friendly but functional applications cover the following habitual acts of physical violence: lapel, throat, neck and hair grabs, rear naked choke, guillotine and bear hugs. In other words, it continues from where Jiyu dai ichi kata left off.
It seems to be harder and harder for people, especially the younger generation, to memorise longer sequences. With smartphones, "all" information is in your palm with a few clicks, so there is less of a need to remember things. This obviously means exercising your brain less (or at least differently) than before. With this in mind, I think there is a need for really short kata, that are not too overwhelming for those in the beginning of their martial arts journey.
With the covid19 pandemic, it has become even more important to have something simple enough, that also beginners can do on their own.
