Amen brother. This video reminds me of my deep belief in the psychology fact you’ve shared back in the Stage Academy course. “The brain is excellent with patterns. If it senses the same thing going on, it turns off.” I’m at the point in my life where continuous improvement seems to be a 15% a day instead of a 1% a day. And majority of the improvements I experience follow the same routine, which can be draining. Trying new things never hurts. It’s how we truly continue improving, because we’ve branched out to hiking other mountains. And sometimes it’s a new scenery that’ll get you excited.

Great message, and it's great to hear your honesty! I don't know if you can always say one day you will wake up uninterested in your field. Sometimes all you need is a pivot. For myself working in data science I used to be interested in mathematics, then it was programming and now I am more interested in the management and communication aspects of my career. I am sure that will pass too, and then I hope I have the courage to change as you put it, but perhaps just to explore a different facet of how I can be great in my field. Or maybe that is myself not having the courage to start at the bottom again? Who knows, thanks for sharing as always.

I'm 63, worked in the dental field for 44 years. Retired for about 18 months, but inside of me felt a calling to do more would be in my future. Honestly, I wasn't sure what that would look like. About 2 months ago I started working for a media studio near my home in a front desk position. I am being stretched, learning new concepts, yet still bringing my skills interacting with people to the table. Even tho the pay is less, I am fulfilled in other ways. You won't ever know all the answers of new chapters in life, but go for it anyway. Step out, find out.

If you don't feel economically insecure for the future, you can start a chapter whenever and do whatever you like, knowing that you and your loved ones will still be secure. Those teachers in your example who stopped improving and enjoying his lessons probably doesn't want to give those lessons too but he has to. Freedom comes with power. The maximum limit of that power is measured with the least thing you have that stops you doing what you want which can be lacking health, money, peace of mind or etc... If you can perceive and achieve what your idea of freedom is, even failing at anything is enjoyable.

It takes a lot of courage to change career path. Mainly financially secured people or daredevils allow themselves to try it. For less couragous I would recommend shifting more time to your hobby first. And later with enough experience figure out how to transform it into new career. And of course, try new things to find new hobby, little plan B. Starting new chapter sounds dramatic, but does it really need to? And Vinh, when I hear about you ending teaching I feel sad, so much fantastic knowledge and skills to be lost with time. So as literature Hero's Journey says if you feel like it's the end of the journey in this path, teach new discipline to take over that path. And with clear heart start next journey.

I had never heard that term before but I have been a fan of the idea. I feel that if you enjoy anything or it interesting you want to know more and should want to apply that, whether learning from others or innovating, constant self improvement is the way to go. I'm interested in so many things that small improvements in any of them makes me happy. I understand that I can't master everything all at once and that getting better makes the effort worth it. The things you have mastered become meditative practices. That what I think anyway. In other words: I concur.

I haven't been passionate about programming for a couple years now - I've been doing it because it's something I'm good at that pays the bills. I think Kaizen will affect how humans think about themselves, like a habit. Because if a person carefully decides to stop and start something else, then that is also a Kaizen. And I'm sure someone with this habit will have the courage to start something new because they believe that it will improve their life.

Sometimes I want to know why we don’t feel fulfilment anymore. If you’re continuously improving and getting better, why stop? There has to be an internal or external reason, right? Internally, you shouldn’t feel like you have perfected it, because that’s impossible. So it makes me wonder, how can I feel and see that day (i don’t want to improve anymore day) coming?

The human brain chases novelty. One day, you get bored of doing the same damn thing again and again, no matter how much you loved doing it when you started.

Vinh, it needs feedback. From experience, I, or anyone, could spend many years improving myself in one area, and without the feedback that I am improving, it will destroy my enthusiasm to continue to improve no matter how much passion I have. It relies on other people. Often those people don't care, they are not interested in amateurs. It is extremely hard to get an feedback for what I want to improve because often the audiences are already too preoccupied with giving feedback to those others who are more successful. Continuous improvement does not work without positive feedback.

The thought is terrifying to me to be honest. The line of work i studied for requires you to be up to date. If you havent worked in the branch for a while you are no longer relevant. I've only worked in that branche for a few months before choosing a different branche. But if the day comes where this no longer fullfills me i have no clue what options there are for me. I would have to go back to school again probably

Vin, I want you to imagine a scenario, What would happen after you stop doing what you have accomplished. The expertise you have gained and shared with the rest of the world ? The world would forget you and your contribution and move on. But will it help a young lad , no very confident wanting to learn this skill ? Think. I would suggest you to start searching for a suitable successor who would keep your legacy and also take it forward. Watch Kungfu panda for more clarity. 😊

What a great concept. I think as I begin to mentally apply this to my own life two things come up- do I keep working on something I don’t want to do anymore simply because I don’t want to do it OR do I complete the work on those things on principle knowing that the object isn’t really of any interest to me, but the ability to work through the boredom actually improves ME? I have no real interest in wrapping up my degree right now though I’m so close to finishing, however, I know that completing that degree will instill in me a greater ability to persevere and do it for myself and my character more so than for the career advantage since I’m not even planning on staying in the field anymore. Really good food for thought today. Great post!
