Wrong... one of the books didn't have a proper ending; the reason being that when the book got revised the ending got taken out. The first editions of the book had the proper ending... the second edition and those beyond didn't. Kakashi apparently got his hands on a later edition, the one WITHOUT the proper ending.

I read a fic where when minato was jiraiya's student he used to proofread his work and when minato died the hokage asked kakashi if he wanted something from his sensei's possessions, kakashi picked up a battered icha icha and when he read it he saw the crises folds and stains during when it minatos . It reminded him of good times. So he read it over and over again and it kind of became a habit. And in another fic it stated that kakashi thought it's better to be known as a pervert than a friend killer .

Jiraiya also said that it wasn't published and the first copy was given to Naruto, and then by extension to Kakashi (the same one that was also used to decipher Jiraiya's message after his death cuz it was the ONLY book with the "ta" in the title)
