Kalamazoo River Smallmouth 2024

Fishing the Kalamazoo River in the spring is something I look forward too every year. The fishing this year wasn't as good as previous years, mainly due to low water levels, but I still found plenty of good fish willing to bite.

Great fishing video, the colors and video were crystal clear. And the fishing was great, lots of big smallies.

What branch are you fishing I fish in plainwell and certainly haven’t caught ones that good lol

I’ve caught some nice ones in Otsego before. Springtime is the best time for me in the river. I fish closer to Kalamazoo.

Would love to get my wife and kayaks on the kzoo river. Any suggestions where to put in? Thanks in advance!

I have only kayaked the kzoo a couple times but there are multiple launches. I've tried from Merrill Park in Comstock and went upstream and then back to the launch but you can go downstream to Verburg Park but that would be pretty short or you could continue to D Ave. where there is a kayak rental place. I'm not sure how that works so you'd have to check with them. They would also be much better at giving you advice for kayak trips on the river. The other trip I took was with Plainwell Kayak Company in downtown Plainwell. That trip was only an hour or two down to Otsego but that is another place to call about kayaking. I think they may also own the D Ave. kayak rental spot but they also offer shuttling service which can be helpful. It is a nice river to kayak and fish though so I hope you find something that works. There are spots to launch upstream near Ft. Custer too.

So what day was it? The 6th of April or the 8th of May? 🤔 So, what was holding all of those Smallies in that one area across form the little lighthouse?

That was the first and last days. All those fish were caught between then. Most of the fish in that area were caught off beds that I could see.
