Kalaripayattu - Episode 6 - Indian Martial Arts

Learn about one of the oldest fighting systems, Kalaripayattu which originated in 1362 CE in Kerala.The word kalari first appeared in Sangam literature which described both a battlefield and a combat arena. Each warrior in the Sangam era received regular military training. The combat techniques of the Sangam period were the earliest precursors to Kalaripayattu. The martial art developed into its present form by the 6th century, during an extended period of warfare between the Chera and Chola dynasties.The Tamil sage, Agastya and Lord Parashurama are regarded as the founders and patron saints of Southern Kalaripayat. The martial art includes strikes, kicks, grappling, preset forms, weaponry as well as healing methods. Regional variants are classified according to geographical positions in Kerala. Kalari warriors stood up against the British in the early part of the 19th century and then the British banned its practice. In recent years, efforts have been made to further popularise the art by featuring it in international and Indian films.

6:20 it’s not Nepayat. It’s Meypayat. Mey means body and payat means fight. It is all about training with your body. It is the foundation of Northern Kalari which prepares a warrior’s body for encountering attacks. In Northern kalaripayattu reflex, flexibility and agility are having paramount importance. This is all about several types of hand and leg movements , stretches, animal postures, jumpings. There are several types of Meypayats that are being practiced in a Kalari. It may take around 5 minutes for a person to do one Meypayattu exercise. Through out that time, he or she wouldn’t get a second to relax. They have to concentrate not only their movements and body - eye coordination but also their breathing. There by they would gradually be able to develop stamina for fighting incessantly. In addition to that, Kalaripayattu is not all about defending ourselves from adversaries but to protect ourselves from any sudden falls or any accidents. A trained Kalari practitioner would be possessing premium reflex so that his subconscious mind would react against an attack against him. This is like you learn driving. After getting proficient expertise in it you would be able to change the gear or apply break using your subconscious mind when an incident occurs while you travel. Basically long staff and short staff training are intended for boosting your reflex. And above all Kalaripayattu has its own legendary healing mechanism connected with Ayurveda. It was intended for those warriors who used to get injuries while fighting as well as practicing. Now Kalari healing mechanisms are widely popular all over the world, particularly in the area of orthopedics. There are a lot to speak about Kalari. But it’s efficacy cannot be described in a KZbin comment.
