I think sourcing an RPK would be a better option in terms of dollars spent and logistics. Gives you the capability of accurate sustained fire over an AK/AR and still plenty of 7.62x39 around, though the price has increased. Also with the after market you can kit it out for night time without too much hassel. I think a base AK over a base AR makes less sense these days due to the gun and ammo cost. However if you need a "SAW", its cost and performance efficient to go with 7.62x39. 124gr pills vs 62/77gr.

You had me at the hardbass intro, stayed for the realistic POV on running AKs. I have a GF3 AK I bought about 5 years ago. I've put some rounds through it, run some drills (not as intense as y'all) but I bought it as an alternative after having an AR that I built and did not have a good time with. Most of the ARs I've shot were either overgassed or built poorly. I shot an AK at a group meet before I bought mine and was hooked. I love the way they shoot. After having shot my AK with guys running ARs at a training (and getting complements running a bone stock AK) I'm 100% confident I bought the right one. One for the road: As far as availability of parts/ammo goes I have two things to add 1) AKs have been increasing in popularity and US-made parts are getting easier to come by, just look at PSA making AKs that are flying off the shelves. 2) It's also a gun that can run and run and run even when dirty, just take use the ones in Afghanistan as an example that's arguably the worst conditions to be running anything with moving parts and it handles it. Nyet, Rifle is fine.

Classes are good but even training at the range is about as good, as long as you do it with purpose and don't just plink around. If you're serious and motivated you can teach yourself to be very proficient without any classes. That said I've taken a couple classes and want to take another one, maybe this summer. I really need to get my ace in gear myself and get shooting more. Been slacking for way too long.

I agree that I would tell someone to get an AR first. Parts compatibility is king. And 5.56 is still more common than 7.62. Once you have a few ARs and are looking for something new, AKs are a lot of fun. I like having both.

I've wanted to buy an AK for several years... but I always end up spending the money on more 9mm and .223/5.56 because I cant see me legitimately utilizing more than one rifle when my 2nd AR build was literally my "grail gun" because my first one was a super cheap budget build and full of buyer's remorse.

I would choose an AR but like he said my Aks are so cool. You can't get that same feel and vibe from an AR. Like I tell my buddies ARs are Legos but lack character. Aks are a mix of blacksmithing and gunsmithing to do anything with them but they have a ton of character and often are representative of the owners and their personality.

I’d chose an AR over an AK… most of the time. They both have their strengths. I’d take an AR if I need to be on my feet and on the move. If I need to defend a position or I need something that hits harder (like a support role/gunner), I’d take an AK in 7.62x39.

the AR is a fantastic platform, I grew up shooting it, and all my friends had/have them. I was an infantry rifleman in the marine corps in my early 20s, where I shot the piss out of the M16. However, after two tours to Iraq, I gained a lot of respect for the AK and as it stands today I have made it my go to rifle. is the AK better than the AR... in most ways no, but I still favor the AK.

In regards to to both channels "aK vs AR" freedom rants. Coming from civilian training experience,Starting with the AK. I have finally came to the conclusion,AR is best in all realms. In every single aspect besides operational reliability,The gas system and bolt carrier group do cause serious reliability issues. But that sacrifice is well made,You guys was talking about 7.62 My thing was I couldn't give that round up,So I got My AR chambered in 7.62 That's my primary upper, just like risky said 5.56 is so common,I got another upper with 20in 223. Wylde barrel. Now I can fire both 223 and 5.56 I put a 13x on my dmr 223 upper. 2 pins I can switch out. Another big thing is weight,Both rifles easy to over due it if not on point with weight add ons. I unfortunately have 11lb beast,A lot on it. I like trench grenades idea of taking of the light during the day.

For 5 going on 6 years I ran only AK's. They're great rifles, I stand by them and will always keep a couple on hand. That being said parts compatibility is very important, I have parts and the means to service my AK's but I just got my first AR and it's so easy to shoot. I bought a complete BCM upper and slapped a complete Aero lower on it, it still needs a thing or two but it's awesome. Being an AK guy and loving how they shoot having shot mine for years. No shit one of my AK's has 12k rounds on it and it still shoots good. It's different handling an AR, they are way easier to shoot especially at extended ranges, just today i took my 14.5 BCM out to 500 yards withouth any issues with just a red dot, fucking incredible, anyone would struggle a bit to stretch an ak in 7.62 out to that range. Love the AR platform. My answer is own both. They are both middle ground powerhouses.

But I think they're the most solid and therefore the way to go for serious use (nothing wrong with running Pmags at the range, IMO).

AR may be more accurate but i dont see it being more reliable unless you got a dumpster bin ak. Even aside from that, 123 grains hits different than 62, so they dont exactly lay down the same lead. All gear things aside, if im facing down a hostile and am putting a pair of rounds on target, id rather they were 123 grain projectiles than 55 or 62.

I'm not really into either AR/AK, as I'm a Bullpup dudebro. ...I prefer the overall shorter package, with a bit of extra weight, to maintain the 16" barrel. However, if I were to choose one, it'd be the AR platform: as I feel AK's are too front heavy, & if society were to fail, I don't want to rely on tools to fix a [AK] firearm, I want my stuff plug & play like an AR!

My SHTF rifle is a Tavor, I just really like how it is balanced. Despite it being heavier than an AR I can hold it up on target for longer much easier due to its balance. Only two complaints about it: FRICKING heavy, and the bolt hold-open device is a chinsy plastic awkward POS. Overall though I dig it. In general I like ARs the best though.

@@clamum9648 Yep, we're in the same boat. I don't think I've checked out the Tavor yet, bc if I did see one at my local store, I probably would've bought it on the spot. ...That's how I came into owning an AUG & Hellion.

AR and 1911. Why? Ive got more than one and no one at all near me has an AK that Ive been able to get into my hands to shoot. I know ONE guy that has one. The rest all have ARs.

The Magpul AK mag hype is total bullshit. I’ve hooked more doorways, car frames and barricades then I can count. Leave them loaded all the time. They’re good to go. Dudes need to run their gear instead of their mouths.

Is there a telegram channel? I went through the whole discord bullshit to register and nothings popping up under the channel except welcome, rules, and announcements. Nothing there. I hate that fucking app

Your 4 ar's and 4 glock 19's idea is a good one but allow me to suggest another thought process. If as Chrisky says we're building a warlord mentality "you didn't prepare here's a basic rifle if your gonna help" type stuff those new comers are going to need to know, at least surface level, how to run sigs, and berretta's, and norinco's, and browning high powers, and m4 clones, and g36's and FAL's.

A norinco with a sling and the ten round detachable and some 30rnders in the the bag/pouch is a lot more lowkey than an ar with chest rig and half of amazon hanging on the handrail 😅. Dint get ke wrong i have both minus the amazon gear but time and place for both.
