The early Dr Who seasons (Doctors 1-9) are like watching a Science Fiction play due to the BBC's very VERY limited special effects budget. A BIG suspension of disbelief is needed to accept that you're looking at alien technology & not spraypainted cardboard & home supplies. The Disintegrators of the Dalek in early versions just scream "Painted Plunger," the writing isn't necessarily bad, but for the amount of imagination you need to use to accept the "special effects" it's basically a High School stage play.

3:47 One reason people say to start with New Who (9-?) instead of Classic Who (1-8) is that the New Doctor Who series run on the tv and come in nice box sets, while Classic Who is quite annoying to access. My personal favourites of classic who are Doctors 3, 4, and 7 (I watched a fair part of it on Dailymotion and KZbin 10+ years ago. It's all long gone from there now.) The other reason is that especially the really old ones are quite different in both style and production quality. They're basically two different series connected by lore. (It's several decades of changing styles of tv series.) So people saying "start with the series that is easier to find, doesn't have random gaps during the first few seasons where the original episode recording got overwritten because tapes were expensive, and is in a more familiar format" makes a lot of sense. But if you want the full experience, it's all fun.

The reason people say to start with the Ninth Doctor is because the modern era started with him and the season count started over. They're NOT saying to skip Doctors 1-8 because they're bad, however. They're saying to skip them because they're a pain in the ass to get ahold of in order TO watch them, and to just start with Nine to save yourself all that hassle. I personally didn't enjoy the classic era, but that's because it's a different writing style and intended for a different type of person than me, and I'm glad there are people that DO enjoy the first eight Doctors. Regardless of any of that, though, I don't think I'll be able to change your mind. If you gain one thing from what I'm saying, let it be this: *just because you don't like something doesn't make it objectively bad and you shouldn't word your opinions as if it does.*

In regards to Doctor Who, everything from Doctors 1-8 is part of the classic show, though 8 was solely in a movie I think The current Doctor Who series starts with 9, played by Eccleston, who was only the Doctor for one season before moving onto 10, where every Doctor so far after has gotten three seasons I think the reason people say to start with 10 is because David Tennant is generally considered to be the most universally beloved Doctor, and because Eccleston’s time was so short, which really sucks as I honestly believed he played a really good Doctor all things considered

Doctor Who can be split into two or three different sections. The classics from 1963-1989 (1st-8th Doctors) with 800+ episodes, and the reboot from 2005-2024 (9th-15th Doctors) with 300+ episodes, and then the spinoffs (Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, K9, Class). People recommend at least 9th/10th Doctor to 13th Doctor because those are primarily written by Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat. And the classics are not necessary to watch, but I've heard they are good just maybe a little dated compared to modern renditions. Also, each episode is between 40 minutes to 1 hour long, so it is a big time commitment.

Yeah, it's not that the old Who is _bad,_ it's that old Who is *_extremely dated._* The very first episode of Classic Who has the Doctor kidnap two human teachers to show them that time travel is real, all to prevent them from calling the cops because he and his granddaughter were living in a junkyard at the time. And I'm pretty sure the escalation goes: "your teachers followed you home?! We'll have to force them to leave! They won't leave? Might have to kill them, then. Oh shoot, they want to call the cops? Fine! Let's introduce them to cavemen!"

So the reason why you should watch Doctor Who from the ninth doctor onwards is because the stuff before is basically considered its own series called Classic Doctor Who. The 8th Doctor was an attempt to reignite the series from when it was cancelled back in 1989. The 9th Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston, was the Doctor for when the series official relaunched back in 2005. TLDR; People recommend watching from the 9th Doctor because there is about a 20 year gap due to cancellation.

They serve pasta in an upside down wine glass with a small mountain of parm on the bottom of the glass (technically the top). Some of the _best_ Doctor Who episodes are the ones like Heaven Sent, the Zygon two-parter, World Enough and Time, and The Doctor Falls. It's the ones where the Doctor is put into a situation where the reputation he's built up over the millennia is irrelevant and he's forced to rely on his wits.

The thing about the whole watch from Dr 10 and up is it's not the quality of the storytelling that goes on it's literally the quality of the images you can easily see and watch doctors 10 and up because the first nine or from very early on in filmmaking some of the first and second doctor episodes are literally in black and white I know that they've retroactively gotten some of the first doctor stuff to be in color that's why I'm saying only some of the first doctor in black and white.

Also the "reboot" started with the 10th Doctor, after a 20 year hiatus with all (or at least most) new writers, directors, actors, sets and CGI, but the lore is mostly the same. The "new Who" is also a lot easier to find whole, whereas some (10 ish episodes) of the original Who is animated recreations of lost media, and a few are from VHS tapes (from air) of lost and found episodes.

@@RHM087 There's actually a really cool museum in Leeds called "the Bradford media museum" that's about the history of British TV and it has a place where you can watch old archived shows including doctor who. I'm not 100% sure if they have every season or not (I remember watching one in black and white) but it's still fun to go and learn. However, I still found the older episodes quite boring as it wasn't what I expected since I'm just a very casual fan so don't know much of the show's history.

Attempted to go to school for zoology (psychology & biology) & also volunteered with the university's scat detection dog program with the intent to move to Nepal after graduation to work with the Red Panda Network. I had a puppy I was training to eventually do scat detection with so that it would be easier to map & routinely measure the genetic diversity of protected areas, how large each individual's territory extends to, the individual's diet & ability to access balanced food sources, etc. There is a lot poop can tell a lab about an animal!

About the “start at doctor 10” thing. 1-8 are much older series. 9 is where “new who” starts. So it’s really only one doctor who’s considered not great. But people still like him. And the cool thing about Doctor Who is you can jump in at any doctor’s first episode and just start watching. Personally my watch order was 10, 12, 11, and soon to add 13 when it comes out.

For doctor who it depends on the show runner, thatbu were descruving fully sounds lime Moffats writing style for 11 and 12, but Russel T Davies who reot the first 4 seasons of New Who is much better imo. Also about the skipping doctors thing, its kind of broken up into two parts, the original series that started in the 60s and ended in the 80s, which ahs a ton of lost media and isnt always easy to track down, and then the revival form 2005 on. A lot of people have only watched rhe revival (ive onyl watched like ahld of season onr of classic so far) so to them theyre only really telling you to skip the 9th doctor (even tho i rlly like him)

I'd just like to pop in and say that the description of Doctor Who given seems to really just be describing how it was under Steven Moffat, AKA the same guy who did BBC Sherlock.His stories were very doctor-centric, whereas Russel T. Davies's stories moreso used the Doctor as a storytelling medium; several episodes barely feature them at all. I would say in general, please give the 9th and 10th doctors a chance if you haven't. That's the start of the revival era, and serves as a soft reboot for the series, effectively functioning more as a standalone sequel than a direct continuation. What you're describing as the problem with doctor who's writing is something that a lot of people *who are fans of that era* similarly posit as a problem with 11-12 (though 12 is better with it and did deliver one of the best stories in the show, "Heaven Sent") (13 is a whole other can of worms)

regarding the doctor who bit: we also think that. the effect that Moffat & his cowriters had on doctor who writing is pretty consistently hated. i didn't watch any of 12 or 13, and I hated most of 11's run too, primarily because they had steven moffat as head writer. he's good for bottle episodes, but he should never have been put in charge, it just turns into an "I'm the doctor, fear me" wank session (h bomber guy talks about moffat in his video on why sherlock is garbage, if you want to see more impassioned ranting)

it's a shame because moffat CAN write well (episodes like blink are proof of that) but Man he cannot write overarching plots to save his life. he's always writing himself into a corner and pulling a chekov's gun out of his ass at the last minute (which isn't really a chekov's gun to begin with because it wasn't mentioned beforehand lol) if the normal-sized mechs run by shrunk-down people were introduced in, say, episode 2 of season 6, the twist ending of how the doctor survived that season would probably be far less stupid.

People aren't saying "skip to the tenth doctor" because all the others are bad. It's an OLD ass show that stopped running. It predates everyone having VCRs even and the network didn't have all the originals, so it's not even possible to watch it all. "The ninth doctor" is when the show was picked back up in the early 2000s, it's the start of what's essentially a completely new series and doesn't require prior knowledge. The Ninth doctor is an edgy asshole with a leather jacket who spends most of his series acting like an old veteran with PTSD, it's done questionably well, but it leads into David Tenant. People will say the recommendation is about the writer Moffat, but honestly, it's just because he's David mother loving Tenant. He successfully picks up that sort of PTSD storyline and takes it somewhere emotionally with occasionally over the top acting. It's worth noting that the first chapter of the new series treats daleks like a freaking ghost. The Doctor doesn't like talking about them, thinks they're gone for good, but fears they'll return. They knew old fans were expecting them. After they finally burst that bubble however it stops being some mystery, I mean why the hell would it be?

I haven't seen the og 1-8 but 11 is about 50/50 for story telling, 12 was acted well, but given terrible scripts, anything past 12 is trash, haven't seen what they gave to Tennant after bringing him back as the doctor.
