Kaleidescape was founded on the premise of delivering the very best movie server experience possible. It starts with their no-compromise belief in keeping the movie lossless compared to the studio master so you can get superior video and audio than you would from the best BluRay. Layer on top of that a sorting and search capability that is best of class, and you’ve got the Kaleidescape solution.
Kaleidescape is the best movie server that exists for home theater enthusiasts. However, these are very expensive compared to an AppleTV, Roku or Nvidia Shield. But if you have the budget and want the best, this video is for you.

We think on-demand streaming platforms are really cool, and while they certainly allow access to tons of content, there are some compromises. We all know how difficult it can be for everyone to agree on what movie to watch. Finding the movie is the other problem we run into. With multiple subscriptions to different services, movie choices are spread across several platforms, making it difficult to easily browse all of your available content when deciding what to watch. While some services such as Apple have attempted to solve this issue, none have come close to Kaleidescape’s solution. Browsing the Kaleidescape store for what to watch almost reminds us of simpler times when you could just browse all the wonderful movies for rent at your local video store. This simplicity is part of what makes the store so special.

After watching movies on streaming services for months, I decided to pop in a 4k movie disc with Atmos to test some changes I made and I realized how bad audio is while streaming. My system just came back to life again. I really hope Kaleidescape becomes more mainstream and affordable. I'd love to own one but for now used 4K discs on ebay will have to do.

With the inevitable end of physical media for movies, we need more platforms like this competing for our business so that the prices can start to come down to earth and be a real option of the the majority of us HT enthusiast... I don't want to have to sacrifice audio and video quality when watching movies, but I also don't want to have to take out an equity loan to have an uncompromised movie watching experience. : (

@@AudioAdvice You would think if way more people could afford the device, then they would make up the cost of investment with all the move rentals and purchases that they would be gaining. Because for me the real hurdle is the thought of paying $6,000-$12,000 for the equipment, and then also still having to pay $8 for each rental and $30-$40 to own these digital movies. That's a big ask unless you are a very wealthy person IMO. Lol

Great video. I've been watching this product for years. I was very glad when they finally added rentals this past year. I am basically looking for product exactly like this. One where I can download a rental or a purchase in the highest quality possible. Only, as most people, I feel the pricing on the Kaleidescape is way over priced. I am willing to spend a premium it is just feels like theft. As they also get a cut from each movie sale or rental. I would think they would want to lower the pricing so they can get one of these in as many homes as possible. Giving more opportunity to have people purchase and rent from them. I will still be waiting...

Hey PS. I wrote a bit above about some of the benefits of a Kaleidescape system, and am happy to go through them with you on a call if you are interested. While the PQ/AQ are outstanding, it's really the sum of all the features that provide the value to our community. Easy to purchase content, more 4K content than is available on disc, everything in one place and always lossless compared to streaming, and all the details that go into rock-solid hardware that is designed for years of trouble-free use are just some of the value that often gets skipped over when just comparing it to another player. The company has done a lot over the past year, lowering our disc-to-digital pricing to help new and existing owners import their current physical media collection, having weekly movie sales that let people buy their favorite blockbusters for $10-$15; and launching new products like the compact Terra that offer some of the full-size Terra's fan favorite features at a lower price point; you really need to check out the platform as a whole to fully understand the value we provide. If you do have any questions, feel free to reach out to me at: training@kaleidescape.com and I'm always happy to chat. Brett Bjorkquist Kaleidescape

I've been a Kaleidescape owner for a few years now and I have to say it is hands down THE BEST way to watch movies. Yes the system is expensive but so worth it in terms of actual content. To watch movies in lossless format is an unbelievable experience. It looks and sounds just like the film did in the theaters. The addition of Rentals recently only added to the overall experience. I like the car analogy mentioned below. You think your car runs great until you get in and drive a Ferrari. The difference is literally night and day. Yes and No. While you can build a comparable hardware setup on your own for far less money, the real unique selling point of the Kaleidescape system is the movie store which has all the content licensed from the studios for digital download at this extremely high quality. In order to feed your own NAS you will either have (somewhat illegally) ripped your BluRay-discs with the well known software tools or you got the content from "the internet". I don't mind if you do, but when you are for example docking your 100m+ Megayacht with 100+ connected movie players in Singapore, which does not condone content piracy in any way, you want your media collection on board to be absolutely legal.

You’re also off that BD’s max capacity is 66GB. Some movies are on triple layer 100GB discs for the UHD version. Disney though has really cheaped out by capping at their 4K discs at 66GB. More of an indictment on Disney short changing their disc customers. At $6K it’s a strong pass. If it was $2K I might take a chance but I can buy a lot of discs for that price not to mention getting a premium player like the UB9000 too.

Then in the store, you will see the cost to upgrade them to their system. We see these ranging from a low of 4.79 to a high of about $30, with most falling at 8.79 for HDR. We have not figured out any pattern on the pricing as sometimes it is under $5 to go from DVD to HDR and other times it is much more. Hope this helps. Hey K-CAS. From a physical media collector or someone with a more technical background that treats the collecting part as a hobby in itself, I understand. For many though, they enjoy watching movies, want to enjoy them in the best quality possible, but don't have the time to spend, the technical knowledge, or the interest in building a machine they have to manage themselves. Calling them super rich or lazy isn't a fair assessment. We don't all wrench on our own cars, grow our own food, or multitudes of other similar analogies. The PQ/AQ is one benefit of Kaleidescape, but it's the ease of use, the fact that anyone can pick up the remote and use it, the award winning cover art and navigation, and the daily work that the engineering and content team put into the product that drives people to Kaleidescape. Even those that have an IT background and have built their own servers before, often end up with a Kaleidescape system once they've gotten a chance to play with it because they can respect the work that goes into it, and recognize it can't just be compared to a disc or stream. There is also the control system integration that ties in lighting, shades, electric screen masks and anamorphic lenses, options not really available on any other platform, or in order to do it you'd spend tens of hours for each movie trying to add in favorite scenes and other features that make the platform unique and provide the recognized value our community puts on the product. Here's two examples of people I met after they bought their systems. They both have built DIY systems in the past, but as jobs got busier and families grew, they decided to jump into the ecosystem, and loved it enough to volunteer to talk about it. Matt Blair: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqXWloF5d550fac Travis: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipzcp5p8es99fbc FYI, I head up education and engagement for Kaleidescape. If someone is happy with their current platform, that's great as the goal is to enjoy the movies however you want. Kaleidescape employees are passionate movie, TV, and concert lovers, and we invest a ton of time and resources into providing our Kaleidescape community with the best product available. I know it isn't the price point everyone would like, but this isn't a huge, faceless company, it's filled with people working hard to build a product that offers owners the best quality content, a larger selection of 4K content than is available on disc, a content team that manages relationships with more than 50 different studios and hand creates favorite scenes and lighting/aspect ratio triggers for movies, plus an engineering team driven to continually create new benefits for our clients like rentals, PVOD, as well as automatic notifications and support if anything goes wrong with a client's system. These are real benefits expected of a premium product, and you can often find myself and other employees answering questions at night and on the weekend in various forums; it's simply a different level of passion and service than you get from a disc player or DIY ripping product. I hope that provides a bit more insight into the price, and while I never say anything negative about anyone choice in platform, I believe Kaleidescape provides a solid value for those looking at the overall experience, which is why you see so many users and reviewers constantly talking about why they love Kaleidescape. @@AudioAdvice well that makes sense because the larger the screen the more artifacting becomes apparent...devices like these would only benefit people running 130 inch 4k projectors...and even then, you wouldn't see the difference between using a high end 4k BluRay player. Another good comparison would be to rip a 4k BluRay lossless in the x265 format. You would have a smaller file size but probably wouldn't see a loss in quality. But the size of your collection means you would need to spend almost 70K to get the storage space in the Kaleidescape system. Please reach out to our team at www.audioadvice.com for more questions

@@AudioAdvice - thank you so much for the reply… Yes, quite large, and still growing… though a lot slower these days. (Been collecting since LD , DVD, 2K and 4K (and even HD-DVD!) My ultimate concern was how to participate in the trade in program… I wouldn’t want to repurchase all these titles at anything but a couple dollars each. Otheriwse it doesn’t work. Fortunately only 1211 are 2K of which 832 are 4K… so, I was thinking 2 servers and one player… I’ll connect to see what could be done. Thanks

@@mikewinburn Mike. That makes sense. The typical upgrade cost to move to HDR is usually $4-8. Sometimes 15-17. Normally that’s the only option which would in theory for the ones that way increase the storage size need.

As mentioned, it's designed to download movies, but also provides a secure A/V over Ethernet connection from the server to a Strato C player. That way you can watch multiple movies in multiple rooms by adding a Strato C player locally or in a distribution configuration.

Fair point. Kaleidescape has always been the premium product. Like many premium products, they have gone to incredible lengths to address every detail and make it a great user experience. But it historically has been out of reach for most people. However, more recently they have been working hard to create options at lower price points which we appreciate. The problem with Kaleidescape, in my humble opinion, is that its future is highly dependent on the relationship between the owners and movie studios. If key owners are accused of anything in their real life, it could lead to studios immediately severing ties with the company and taking back what K-Scape customers have already purchased. It's a good product but its future is not guaranteed if we're being honest. But if I am worried about losing a few thousands-worth of movies I have already watched, then I guess I am far from the target customer of this product.

Actually there is more risk with the huge tech companies where you pay the same price for a movie and it is stored in their cloud. With Kaleidescape, the movie sits on your Kaleidescape server. If things blew up you would just unplug it from the internet and you would be fine. Thanks for watching

This is right up there with having a CD carousel with 300 CDs. Today I have a Tidal account that makes a physical CD player and discs pointless today. Similarly this service / hardware made sense a decade ago when people had DSL or otherwise slow ISPs. Today people can get 10Gbps home internet, I have slower 2.5Gbps (2500Mbps) home FiOS internet, meaning people like myself have zero desire or in particular a need to download to a local "NAS" aka Kaleidoscope server movies. It adds one more level of needless stuff in your house. Personally I own several thousand discs and they're all sitting in boxes, an overwhelming monstrosity. I've trimmed it down to a couple thousand movies that I repurchased through other streaming services. This company needs to offer a live streaming service or they'll go bankrupt. Potentially losing several thousand dollars worth of paid movies doesn't sit well either.

It is a luxury product, designed for the very best picture and sound, but if you have a huge bluray collection already, they do have a cool way to add them to the system. You purchase a cheap bluray reader, then they can satisfy the studios that you own the content. You can then do what is called a digital upgrade. In many cases (except Disney franchise) you can take an SD dvd even and pay $4-8 for an HDR version.

I do not get why this needs proprietary hardware instead of being just a digital store, that is, beside milking customers out of every penny... $18k for the basic setup?! Do you have any idea of the level of home server you can build for that price AND still have to spare for physical uhd blu-rays? One can just rip the disks and archive them into their server if they care about instant access...

Garbage. For their pricing the storage should be included in the purchase of media for free. As you increase your collection, WBTW is how they should make money, you will automatically be upgraded with increasing storage. At $4,495 for the 6TB player and as much as $37 per 4K HDR movie it's just not an option.

Don't call it garbage because you don't like the prices. Mass market consumers [who usually only care about price] are NOT the target demographic, for a Kaleidescape system. This platform is marketed at passionate home theater enthusiasts who want the very BEST possible source, for their system. As great as 4K Blu-ray can be, it's not always the absolute best. NO other company is doing what Kaleidescape does [within an all digital space]. I am very grateful, for Kaleidescape and their platform. Without them, streaming would be the only option there is (if physical media ultimately disappears). SCREW THAT!!! P.S. Movie prices on the platform are determined, by the studios (per their agreements with Kaleidescape). Only Warner Bros. and Paramount require the pricing, to sometimes be priced over $30 (initially). Most other studio titles are under $30.
