Fire tips! Been surfing for 20 years, made a few changes and ripped my last session. Psyching out of my mind!

When I was learning to first catch waves, I had the all too common problem of being too “stiff” on the board, and losing my balance. I learned to absorb the movement of the board into my knees, so that I could keep my upper body relatively stable (and thus keep my balance). When I started to try to learn compression and extension, I mimicked this technique, compressing and extending in such a way as to NOT put force through the board so that I could stay “loose” and balanced. It wasn’t until I had failed to utilize this faulty technique for weeks that I just decided I would try to pump so hard that I would submerge the board (I was just messing around and experimenting). When I put this much force through the board (similar to the “jump” recommendation in Kale’s video) I felt the board rebound off the water and interact with the wave in a new way, completely unlocking this skill and my bottom turn and speed pumps, transforming them from something more passive, to something more active and engaging with the wave.

Unfortunately I don't have a choice, I only get to go surfing once a week, if I'm lucky twice a week. But I live minimum 1hr away from the nearest surf beach and have a full time job :( but just in a few months I feel like I'm getting my skill back. But still having the same issues I had over 10 years ago

Excellent advice kale but here in Guernsey Channel Islands your lucky if you get beginner surf more than once a month- sometime three days on the trot then nothing for a month or more. Added witn in the summer 90 or more boards in the water at any one time. Very frustrating. But I perseve and progress slowly so must complain

One of your best videos so far. You’re definitely improving the quality of your tutorials Kale! It would be amazing if you could talk about front foot positioning. How to consistently hit the sweet spot from take off. I land with my front foot too far forward 90% of the times. And no, I do not hold the rails. Not sure how to correct that! Anyways, thanks for your videos. They are an awesome contribution to the surf community 🤙🏽

Hey kale, i have been thinking a lot recently, and i thought about putting weight to my body (not like eating a lot but more like special weights) and try surfing with that, so that when i am taking them back off, i will be faster and literally way lighter especially in my movements. A little bit like the old monks used to do put metal rings on there arms for training to be faster and stronger. But i am not sure yet if that makes sense, i would like to hear your thoughts on that

I suggest surfing smaller waves until you develop the confidence to go out in bigger surf. That's what I'm doing. It's helping my paddling, which is crucial because bigger waves move faster. I'm still scared to go out in the really big stuff, though. Maybe my suggestion should be ignored. haha

Surf more. If you can't surf more, then paddle your board in a pool to build up your paddling ability so you can be strong when you surf in the ocean. If your local pool won't let you paddle, join a masters swim program and ask a coach to look at your stroke. That helped me immeasurably.

Look into a "fish" surfboard. It has lots of volume, and therefore easier to catch waves and stand up. It also has the height, and width of a shortboard. This is a key part of it too. Kinda like a cross between a mall. What do you think @kalesbroccoli?
@mr.slater4577
@mr.slater4577 3 жыл бұрын
I'd still recommend a Malibu style foamy or at least a 7'6 hardboard with enough volume for you bodyweight. A common mistake is to get a board too short. You can step back on a Malibu to get it turned and still get plenty of waves. The time standing on the board is the "quality time" to learn an progress
