I watched an interview with Julie, and she mentioned that during pre-filming, she had to feel comfortable with the hammer and considered them as her hand extensions. To do that, whenever she went for jogging, she brought her hammers along. It added to her weight while jogging plus made her used to with the hammers...

I like the take that she chose hammers as weapons because of the physical feedback to compensate for her deafness. I always had the impression, that she and the Baseball Bat Man are really close to each other and their non-traditional weapons indicated to me, that they don't have a traditional education and learned by surviving from a young age with weapons they more or less just found. The audio commentary confirms this. I love how Gareth Evans communicates such minor details without having his characters just blurting them out and how he gives some depth even to his evil minions. Baseball Bat Mans reaction to the death of his sister humanises her. She becomes a person who has loved, who was loved and who didn't want to die. This is what sets Evans violence apart from most other action movies. The action is extremely brutal and exciting, but the violence isn't glorified. When Rama killed the assassin in the end, he isn't shown in a victorious hero pose, he's just exhausted, staring into the distance, horrified by the violence, he inflicted. Evans stories are about people who try to escape from violence, but the only mean they ever had, is violence. So his movies - and also his TV show Gangs of London - become survival horror, where the only way out is further in, hoping to stay alive long enough to see the light.

Also, fun fact: the movement of Hammer Girl is actually inspired by Silat, particularly from the style of Cakar Harimau (lit. Tiger Claw). The director Gareth Evans really like this particular silat style and tried to come up with a weapon that can replace the "claw hand" used in in the silat style and thus decided to use the claw part of a hammer. Hence why most of Hammer Girl's finisher relies on the claw instead of smashing with the blunt side.

Silat fighter here - I love that you guys broke down that scene, and gave so much input. The Raid series is incredible in terms of realistic fight scenes! The individual move sequences usually all show high skills and plausible action/reaction. These are movies though, so the only really unrealistic thing in the fight scenes is the total duration of the fights (I'm sure you would never have Karambit Fight in a kitchen that lasts 7 minutes). Please keep going with these videos, which focus more on realistic scenes than on total BS from 80s Action Movies. Personally I take so much more valuable input from you guys when you discuss the realistic parts.

one of the things that i like in this kinda movies (the man from nowhere, the raid 1-2, donnie yen movies, tony ja movies and specially jackie chan movies) is that unlike amarican action when the character ALWAYS stands his ground or advances, the characters in these movies knows when to step back, when to jump back, when to switch to defence for a while or even when to run away for a few seconds

This scene we see the sign language with her brother so learn she is deaf. So her eyesight is her only way to perceive the world. Then when the glasses come off we learn her right eye has been destroyed at some time. This makes her pretty courageous when you consider that her left eye is all she has and if that gets damaged she is cut off from the world for the rest of her life, and yet she is out there constantly getting in fights on her missions. The glasses are her best way to protect all she has left, as well as covering her vulnerability from her enemies - they see that single eye they will be aiming for it.

I guess a great aspect of the scene is that unlike other one-versus-multiple fight scenes, it happens in a subway train so with the tight corridor the gang has to come in one by one. I was actually confused with her style of combat, because this was an Indonesian film and their wikipedia page said that they were using Pencat Silat, an Indonesian Martial arts throughout the movie. The moves looks so similar to Kali's stick fighting technique so I immediately assumed that they were using Kali in their fight scene, but after seeing some Pencat Silat practitioners in youtube, their movements were pretty similar to Kali, yet their style was more focus destroying their opponent were as Kali was designed to kill their opponent efficiently. Try reviewing the baseball bat guy in the same movie. His movement was smooth in combat.

@@ScenicFights Man. Keep adding real world demos like that Deadliest Warrior-style meat test and it'll happen before you know it. Also, idk where you guys are getting all these accurate props but it's great. Also, great use of chapters, please consider adding them to older videos. Also, this is great, this whole channel is a gold mine. Edit: Especially love the "weapon breakdown" and discussing the logistics of murder via general purpose handtool.

What's your favorite fight scene from The Raid series?
@mattconley28153 жыл бұрын
Oof, shoot, there's so much good (read: fun) to choose from. Had to review a few of em to really narrow it down. I think it's a tie between Mad Dog vs Andi/Rama in Redemption and Rama VS Hammer Girl/Bat Boy in Raid 2. Hammer Girl/Bat Boy have such interesting unconventional weapons, it makes that fight mesmerizing.

I have to say, this looks like how Logan is getting a bit more even after being put in some scary Jiu Jitsu positions, by putting Chad in some scary weapon positions :)

@@ScenicFights I subscribed only recently, but I've been a fan for a while, great stuff. I've watched so many movies yet I can't even think... wait.. Jailbreak, to me, is like, one of the underrated MA movies, even if it does come off as a ripoff of the 'Raid' movies.

What I like about that scene is that she takes an everyday object and turns it into a terrifying weapon. While the scene is not too realistic, I'd like to point a few things out that translate to real hitmen: 1) you don't need a fencing weapon, because you're not about to duel yourself. For instance, a Kukri is more a tool than a weapon, but it hits harder too than e.g. a bowie. If you try to stop someone from shooting you, it may actually be the better choice, but if you're expecting a knife fight, then the bowie would serve you better, given that you're skills are matching... 2) a murder weapon does not need to be fancy nor state of the art. If you got an unarmed and unexpecting target, why use a 2000 USD rifle, when a hammer or screwdriver will do just fine? IRL old revolvers, baseball bats, machetes, kitchen knives, garottes, screwdrivers, and even hammers have been used far more in gang wars than automatic firearms. Most of the time, they picked individual targets and hit them before they knew what was happening... 3) a hammer is easier to explain and less conspicuous to buy than a gun. Moreover, when you clean it and dispose of it, hardly anyone would call the cops, unlike someone who finds a discarded gun...

you're right about the hammer claw getting stuck there. experience tells us that too. here in the philippines we have a lot of cases where the knife gets stuck onto someone after getting stabbed and the assailant suddenly loses their weapon. most of them survive by running away with the knife stuck to them. when you stab someone, the muscles contract and the weapon gets stuck. now with the claw of the hammer that would get double stuck.
