My mistake everyone. The term "Kali" used to describe a martial art is definitely something made up in the USA. The moves practiced in it are honed in the islands

um, arnis is what we call kali /eskrima in the northern ph its known more as arnis or eskrima than "kali". Im pinoy and this art has been in my family for generations so im not just talkin out my ass. Personally I appreciate what pappy did on the video I thought it very honest and a good tribute to the art. Thanks Pappy if your reading this good job again on the film =)

I'm not saying eskrima or arnis is a filipino-american art, I'm saying that the term "Kali" to describe the art was coined in America.

perhaps it is correct if we use kali as root word of the tagalog word kalmot- to scrape with the nails. But kali seems to be more correct to mean sword or a long bladed weapon. the tagalog word Kalis refers to sword. I remember the command use in the Citizen Military Training or Citizen army training it says: Handa Bunot Kalis! (Ready draw sword!)

Doesn't mean it is not authentic, as we all know Kali-Arnis-Escrima are all very similar in some ways, it just means that everyone needs to stop with all this "where did it come from" and "it is the mother of all FMA" BS. Just enjoy it for what it is - a truly Filipino American martial art.

". Even though Pinoy is now synonymous with being Filipino, it is still unmistakably a word created by Filipino Americans for Filipino Americans - there is no denying this truth. Just the same as Kali is a term used by Filipino Americans in the middle part of the last century to describe Filipino Martial Arts...

Who cares if they are. The point is I practice FMA because I think it works and I like it. The whole reason why people get bent over the whole "kali" thing is people saying it is the mother martial art when it's not. Kali is not a term pre the early 1900's to describe a martial art. Arnis and Escrima is a post hispanic term and Kali is a term coined in America. bdoi, your an American, right?
@theflyingempanada

bdoi, I am just saying that Kali is not a term that was coined in the Philippines. It is a term that was coined IN AMERICA by Filipino immigrants.
@theflyingempanada
@theflyingempanada 17 жыл бұрын
No I don't know what you mean. People in The Philippines KNOW what Arnis AND Escrima is. Heck, the Muslim southerners even know what these two arts are but they practice Silat instead, not Kali. How come no one knows what Kali is? Why is everyone in so much denial that the term "Kali", when used to describe a Filipino Martial Art, is something that Filipino Americans coined.

Ever heard of the term Pinoy? Well this word was originally used by Filipinos in America during the early 1900's to described themselves - they called each other Pinoys and no one in the Philippines knew what it meant - a word totally created by Filipino Americans. Fast forward to this day and of course everyone knows what "Pinoy" means and Filipinos back in the Islands even call themselves "Pinoy".

Oh come on. Don't put word in my mouth this is the exact quote: "Even though Pinoy is now synonymous with being Filipino, it is still unmistakably a word created by Filipino Americans for Filipino Americans - there is no denying this truth. Sure, so what do you think of Silat? Since there is really only an imaginary line between the Philippines and Indonesia, shouldn't we be really talking about Silat as the mother of FMA.

estoca cut the crop with this search google for "kalikalihan" and select the "About Kali" topic from ezboard thing, this is nothing! yeah your right many people in philippines doesnt know what kali means,i agree with that, but you know why? beacuse most of the locals prefer learning foreign martial arts rather than their own martial arts thats why they dont know what kali is, every country has their own martial arts but people prefer learning from other country,do you know what i mean?

That would be silly. Why do people always say this especially the militant kids in college who always get bent out of shape over it. Don't you know the past is what makes us, as a people who we are today? Hell, if it weren't for the Gringo Spaniards, we might not even be united as Filipinos. Manilenos and people from Cebu might be in different countries and we would be having a discussion over something completely different.

@BahoUtot its filipino. i thought kali was derived from the word kamot(ka) and lihok(li). bisaya dialect. and i agree w/ aykobass93. the baybayin letters shown was K-A-LA-I. should had been 1st letter w/o cross under and 3rd letter w/ a dot above.

You know what, since this is your reasoning let's just dissect all the Spanish words in Tagalog, ban the catholic religion, and start calling our country Maharlika instead of Philippines. Yeah we don't know what they called it before the Spaniards came, but we also don't know it was called Kali.

Nah I just knew you are American by your militantness. Most Filipinos don't care about any of this stuff ie. pre hispania, what the original martial art was and so on. No offense, but I think Filipino American kids are like this becase they never learned of their culture so they try to over compensate for it, which in times is a good thing. History is good, but making stuff up isn't
