I practice Kali, along with Muay Thai and MMA, and I must say Kali is my favorite martial art. It's an excellent art that compliments all other arts one might train in. I have found myself using Kali techniques in boxing, wrestling, and Thai, all to great effect.

I keep going back and forth between doing Kali or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I’m 31 and I want to end my martial art journey with one of the two. It’s hard to choose. I found a Kali place but they don’t seem to spar so everything is based on theory. BJJ you can at least spar and you know it works. But it’s limited to 1 vs. 1 and no weapons.

dear evan,I was a kickboxer,judo champ,jiu jitsuan,and have done some muay thai,yet I STILL ADVOCATE FOR REAl world fighting that you need silat/kali or a good CQC because of weapons,impact ones as well as bladed,the real world is not a contest of skills in a safe environment,its dirty,vicious and nasty,theres no fair play-bjj could get u killed in a knife attack,last thing u want to do is grapple,having a gun?at close range a knife vs gun the knife wins,you could be stabbed multiple times before u got it out,also try bjj on multiple opponents,we have MMA people coming to learn some silat to deal with weapons-saying that military get their arses kicked by BJJ,ridiculous,they don't train to be grapplers,thats like them saying they beat u in a firefight-guru

Before a Foreigner learns Kali, they should know the History and learn the Culture and Roots and about The Philippines. Kali is an underrated Martial Arts like The Culture, Language, Food and Geography and Location of the Philippines, not all Foreigners know and have the Knowledge of the Philippines, they just take lessons and use the Art of Kali for Self Defense, since Kali only been popularize recently, it is actually an Ancient Martial Arts of the Philippines, not like any other like Karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Muay Thai.Jet Kune Do, which Sifu Dan Inosanto with collaboration with Sifu Bruce Lee a new form of Martial Arts and other Martial Arts, Kali is underrated just like the Filipino Food and culture it is not well known..The cradle and the beginning of the name Kali came from the word Escrima or Arnis. Historically started when Magellan the conqueror landed in Cebu, Mactan The warrior Lapu-Lapu resisted against the Spanish Conqueror Magellan and his Army and use the Martial Arts Escrima or Arnis ans sword the original name which is known as Kali in Bisaya in Cebu, He was the first Hero of the Philippines...

Everyone saying this is ineffective. Let's take this to perspective. Street fights are random.... But most of the fighters are inexperienced. And to use this form of martial arts or any other. Every single one of them requires the basics of defending and they train day by day to make sure they know how to execute the moves well. This for could be effective, just that it takes time,practice, and lots of training. Being able to defend sticks and punches going really really fast, then every form of martial art would be useless.

@Marian Kotúč Hahaha... please... bring your biggest baseball bat to one of them. Demonstrations and drills are NOT the skill. The skill enables the kill. FMA is not designed to score points or win rounds or induce pain. It's designed to "end" engagements in seconds or split seconds. Good luck with the baseball bat or the moron with a knife. Cheers!

Ayat Ti Ubing Spain conquered the phillipines DESPITE this martial art. So what in the end very few people know it at a level that is effective against a trained soldier or any nation. Let mma do the talking. Kali principles are straight forward and I notice a bunch of ok aikido and judo mixed in with the demonstrated techniques which tells you that this isn't your grandpa's kali. All martial arts have evolved along with all the information sharing going on these days. Spain 400 yrs ago was made up of very battled hardened soldiers who fought against tribes in africa, american indians and asians so at THAT time they were the shyt and no amount of kali was going to slow them down. These days spaniards aren't even a shadow of their former selves.

+ZFlyingVLover Spain conquered the Philippines mainly because first, through the influence brought about by Christianity. Second, there are many disputes between datus, and the Spanish use that to their advantage. Third, they have more advanced weapons. If they invaded Philippines at a time wherein both would use swords, bows, and shields, there is a high probability that Spain would lose against the Philippines.

Aulvikdngr 30 guys. Most of them with metal swords, spears, crossbows and armor. This was 1521 man. How much more 'advanced' could they be?! It's not like the philipines was isolated from the rest of the world either. You gotta face facts that these spaniards were tough sob's back then. They aren't now but back then they were the shyt and had to be feared. You gotta have balls to have circumnavigated the world in 1521!

Well Kali means simply "and art to kill".... that's the best description! It is a martial arts that is base on reality of your surroundings! Using almost everything as a weapon, is a reality! Bags, shirt, ball pen and even your cellphone! It may sound funny, but when face a kali practitioner, it will not look funny at all!!! LOL! Against the over-rated kung fu, my money is on Kali!!

Kali has some good techniques that could be useful, but at the same time you need to be a critic of what you are actually going to use, or might be actually life saving. Look at 2:12 in this video, that's just pathetic Kali, noone would actually attack you in such a silly manner. For mano a mano encounters Kali is a good option, but I've seen few instructors who actually teach you good skills for knives attacks. It's a matter of being critic of what you're learning.

Marian Kotúč a one blow knife stab is ussually the most fatal , the problem with fast phase multiple wound attack is that ussually the wounds are shallow and bloody mess , which making the attackers blade wrap in blood and difficult to hold the knife . In fact most of knife victims here in the philippines survive from multiple wounds . Thats why criminal here uses a icepick because it was less bloody .

This is cool and all, and I respect this art. But how about you display the art in actual use against people fighting back. In a real-life situation, no one is going to stand there and allow you to perform techniques, it just doesn't happen smoothly the way it's portrayed in this video. Sure, it's how you learn the technique, but after you master the technique against an individual allowing you to perform it, you then attempt to master it against an opponent fighting back. If you really want to prove your martial art works, present it in real-life use against a fighting opponent.
@Reporterfreebies
@Reporterfreebies 10 жыл бұрын
Kali martial art develops in you the weapons oriented mindset..... if you encounter a fight, you use whatever object you have as weapons... if you can pick up a stone then do it and throw it on the person's face... if you have scissors in your pocket or pencils, then use it because they have the same attribute as a knife...An umbrella or baseball bat have the same attributes with sticks.... the art of Kali is the art of dirty fighting...... and that is why empty hands fighting is taught last... you first learn weapons before empty hands because of the philosophy behind the art..... which is "Dirty fighting"... this is also the reason why Kali is an art that is obsessed with weapons....

That would be cool to see however I have yet to see hardly any arts truly do that on KZbin. I understand what you are saying but they aren't on here to prove to you how realistic their demo is merely to showcase the art. If you want to know how it works in a real situation, spar with a practitioner or go and train in the art don't rely on a you tube video.

When u start practicing any art, you would not ask questions like, how it would work when the other is fighting back. The practice of art is for the trainee to be prepared to react as efficient and effective. The same goes with our everday lives. My respect to all my brothers and masters.

Kali is (based on my observation) a type of Practical Martial-art. A type of more instinctive than creative. It is a very creative one but what i mean is it is what your body do with immediate response. Swift and Deadly. One of the trainers was a Filipino. He is or was a host of Forge In Fire. It is also a close combat type that requires very quick thinking/response in a very dangerous situation. We see lots of movements but if we face a real fight especially wit a group or trained killers or terrorists we should consider to make simple, swift yet deadly blows wit or without you holding a weapon. Kali is also do not require much flexibility but brain. It is used not to hit as hard as what other martial-arts but to hit only as necessary. As I was watch it, I tried some imitate some move is truly anyone can study it and use it in practical cases. To use the stick to fight some one with stick or a long weapon is the hardest training well that also apply in any martial-art. A Proud know Pinoy [developed] Martial-art.

I''m a Filipino and with all due Respect for kali , not all of it's concept are applicable in a real life situation . I've been into many fights in town and all I can say is that Kali or special training may not help you win a fight . Since in real combat everything is about survival , your enemy will fuckin kill you no matter what and choreographed movements are useless in real life fights.

one wouldn't survive even half a minute if he fights against a kali practitioner knife with knife....other cultures have their martial arts too. still i am proud to be a Filipino. we're just very unfortunate when it comes to politics!

It was developed in a very knife heavy culture. For a long time, pretty much everyone carried a knife everywhere. For fighting, for work. I think even now, more people in the Philippines own knives than guns. Developed out of necessity, it's truly an amazing art.

The Philippines has many dialects. The Philippine archipelago is composed of three major sections: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Luzon where many tagalogs lives generally call this art ARNIS, Visayas call this ESKRIMA, and Mindanao where the majority of muslims live, locally call theirs KALI. Which means the masters that developed some style like Combatan Arnis maybe originated in the Luzon region, Doce Pares Eskrima or San Miguel Eskrima in the Visayas region and Pekiti Tarsi Kali in Mindanao.

Tell me something new but have you actually talked to a Muslim from Mindanao and asked him what name they use to describe their respective art? It's definitely not called kali.
@nielsericcalasin2458
@nielsericcalasin2458 9 жыл бұрын
I did not said Muslims call their art Kali. I just said that majority of Muslims are on the Mindanao Region. Warrior Muslim like to use the kris in their combat. Uhmm you're from the Philippines right? Or you're just some know-it-all westener? Just look up Pekiti Tarsi Kali and Kalis Ilustrisimo. All of their forefathers originated in the Mindanao region. Styles in the southern part of the Philippines prefer using blades and bolo techniques unlike their sister styles on the northern part focusing on using sticks.
@spartanwarrior1
@spartanwarrior1 9 жыл бұрын
that`S not totally true and a general misinformer. their northern counterparts also preferrably use blades. it`s just not that well-known in the west. talibong and other blades hil from the north. i know best since my forefathers come from the north.. and it`s pekiti tirsia which is not from mindanao but from the island of negros occidental (the same region presas arnis comes from).

The words Arnis and Escrima are rooted in Spanish - a remnant of a time when Filipinos were required to be polyglots - fluent in Filipino, in Castilian Spanish, and even in English, in addition to the native language of their province! Arnis comes from arnes, Old Spanish for armor. Escrima (also spelled Eskrima) is derived from the Spanish term Esgrima that is the term for fencing. The word Kali, meanwhile, has many theorized origins. It is said to be derived from words in several Filipino languages which referred to martial arts in different regions such as kaliradman in Visayas and kalirongan in Pangasinan. It could also have been derived from the kalis sword (aka kris sword), or from the word kalis which means, “to scrape” in some Filipino languages. Depending on who you ask, the word “escrima” is sometimes used interchangeably with the term “arnis.” When escrima techniques are used with bladed weapons (instead of rattan sticks), the art becomes known as kali. Others say the difference in the names either implied the region from which the art originated or the time period when the art was developed. Regardless of the exact etymology, it was Dan Inosanto who popularized the word “Kali” to refer to the indigenous Filipino Martial Arts of blade and stick fighting.

This is almost pure Destruction Technique, very hard to pull off in a fight unless you have a high fight IQ. Fights to watch with destruction Technique, Chris Weidman vs Anderson Silva, Chris broke Silvas foot w/ a Destruction Technique. Yoel Romero vs Chris Weidman, where Yoel busted open Weidman's had with a flying tiger knee, lol, pure destruction. Tony Ferguson, one of the most complete fighters in the UFC, is able to mix in Wing Chun in his striking, he has a very high fight IQ and willing to mix and progress his technique, it makes him razor sharp and deadly. You need to have a good understanding of Martial Arts to be able to mix and learn while executing these techniques. Kali Empty hands teach you to fight in a telephone boot, high Technique and hand speed, mixed with traditional boxing South Paw and Muy Thai you could learn so much, remember to train alot, and have a calm mind, there is no storm, you are the storm.

I hate set pieces they are meaningless in a street fight. Real attackers don't offer you their arm to do fancy moves on them. On good for TV.

it will not work if you don't develop your attributes first like fast reflexes and intuitive reaction..... that is why you train with weapons first.. a stick travels 150 miles per hour.. if you can defend against sticks, you can easily defend against punches and knives and kicks.... watch Balintawak style of Eskrima in youtube so you would understand what I mean by fast reflexes and intuitive reaction....

Yes but it is almost impossible for the opponent to fight back due to speed and accuracy.Kali is the art of killing and used in street fights and defense only and it is used to quickly take out opponents.If the video showed a real battle it would just be blood and gore...

chinacane it will work that is why you need some drills like kali practitioners do you may not use all of its movement but you can apply some of it in a much effective way that is why you do some drills so your muscle memory will do it automatically where the situation needed it most

So most of you think it works. I believe it can offer some form of protection in the sense that knowing nothing can be worse, but also knowing nothing and running or not getting involved cos you have no fighting skills can be even safer. I've been in situations where kung fu gave me the confidence to ward off people and yes, I did use some simple moves and very easily avoided being punched, thanks to hours of training. However, I could have just as easily stayed out of that incident. What I do know is, there is no way I would have been able to do jackie chan moves on these street fighters, and that is my point.

Why use shit metal/punk/rock music? It has never suited fighting, UFC has also made that mistake of marketing it that way. Fighting is supposed to be an honorable and classy affair and as such only dance/trap/dub suit it.
