Use the foam pad for the dog. When I do overnights with my dog, he is a much happier camper if he can get some good sleep on the pad. He is about 80 pounds, has a great coat and really doesn't seem to mind the cold. The only time he wants to snuggle up is down into the mid 20s. Matter of fact he puts off a lot of heat when the tent is closed up. He wears a backpack too as I don't feel like carrying all the food he eats. Pro tip, use the dog backpack as your bear bag when hanging food for the night as bears love dog food.

I have almost 20 years of experience hiking & backpacking with 2 different Golden Retrievers. Suggestions: Off leash training, then you can use trekking poles. I still tie her in campsites or she would have her nose in everyone's cooking pot! Separate food and water bowls. They usually say a dog can carry approximately 20% of body weight. Water sources for Kali were abundant on this trip but carrying extra water for the dog is important especially in warmer weather. On another note I ended up buying a small free standing tent to cope with tent platforms. Interestingly I scattered the ashes of my first hiking dog on Mt. Liberty and counted it on her 48 list. Kali looks like she will become a great backpacking buddy.

WOW I thought Kali was a small dog until you picked her up! Smartwool is the best for sleeping, hiking, chilling in! You did a great job of putting the tent on a platform! Sometimes I even had a piece of paracord tied around a big rock! Thanks for sharing, your videos are always so well done!

On my AT hike last year I stayed at Liberty Spring Campsite. That was a chilly morning. Probably 40 degrees. Only a month earlier I was in NJ and NY in the first week of July sweating my ass off. That morning at Liberty Spring I got up and packed real quick and saw the sunrise from Liberty peak and on to Zealand Falls Hut. Probably my favorite day on trail. Actually Eliza Brook Shelter - Liberty Spring - Zealand Falls Hut - Pisgah Hut (I also liked seeing it in a previous video) were all really good days. Ah man, now I'm super reminiscing. I really hope you get a chance to get the thru-hike in next year.

Fall is a wonderful time to go backpacking! Little to no bugs, cool temps, and amazing scenery. Once upon a time I was hiking down a 14,000' mountain in Colorado and I passed a guy and his dog. The guy was wearing no pack, and might have had a camera or something in his hand. His dog on the other hand was wearing a pack that looked to pretty much be stuffed to near capacity. And I don't remember the dog being a large working breed or anything of the like. I don't know, maybe his dog loved carrying stuff for him.....or maybe he was just a jerk.
