Vasily Sergeyevich Kalinnikov:
Symphony No. 1 in G minor (with Score)
Composed: 1894 - 95
Conductor: Yevgeny Svetlanov
Orchestra: USSR State Academic Orchestra
00:00 1. Allegro moderato (G minor)
14:12 2. Andante comodamente (E-flat major)
21:41 3. Scherzo: Allegro non troppo - Moderato assai (C major)
29:23 4. Finale: Allegro moderato (G major)
The Symphony No. 1 in G minor by Russian composer Vasily Kalinnikov was written from 1894 to 1895 and first published in 1900. The symphony is dedicated to Russian music critic and teacher Semyon Kruglikov.
After contracting tuberculosis in 1893 while serving as conductor of the Maly Theatre in Moscow, Kalinnikov moved to Yalta for a more salubrious climate. It was there that he composed his first symphony. Upon completion in 1895, the symphony’s score was sent to its dedicatee Kruglikov, who was both Kalinnikov's teacher and financial benefactor. Kruglikov recommended the work to the country's leading conductors.
The symphony was premiered in 1897 at the Russian Music Society in Kiev. It was conducted by Alexsandr Vinogradsky and was received well by the audience, who gave the second and third movements an encore. The success of the premiere was followed by performances in Vienna, Paris, London, and Berlin.

A criminally neglected symphony. No wonder why Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff loved him so much.

You know, that's quite interesting. Could you specificate it a bit more in details, because Kalinnikov wrote most of his major works after the eath of Tchaikovsky. So, that's interesting, that Tchaikovsky had found his talent and skills already before these masterpieces composed -- if you don't mind, I'd like to receive more information about it from yours. Or do you mean Boris Tchaikovsky?

@@Ivan_Preobragenskiy Tchaikovsky did in fact recognize his talent just before his death, although it seems to have been in conducting. According to Wikipedia: "In 1892, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky recommended Kalinnikov for the position of main conductor of the Maly Theatre." Also, after Kalinnikov's death and on Rachmaninoff's recommendation, Tchaikovsky's publisher P. Jurgenson bought some of his music including the second symphony

As V. Paskhalov, Kalinnikov's biographer and friend, writes, "the theme of the Andante came to him as he lay sleepless and listened intently to the stillness of the night. Everybody is asleep, no sound comes from without, but the silence itself seems to vibrate. One hears the throbbing of one's heart and experiences a feeling of loneliness..."

Kalinnikov seems to be the greatest lost of the late Romantic and of Russian music. He has this unique enveloping style that makes like him so much. The magistral unificate combination of Dvorak, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky styles (with a very marked personality) and his fabulous use of the orchestral tutti makes clear that he had a genius mind

This is very beautiful so thanks for posting it. It should be much better known and played far more frequently in both concert halls and on the radio. Lovely first and second movements and a terrific final movement. Lush melodies throughout. Terrific dances too (all reminiscent of Tchaikovsky and Aram Khachaturian, his fellow countrymen). This is simply stunning in its artistry. There are two other very good versions of this on KZbin (one by Neemi Jarvi one by Osmo Vanski). All three are good. Wonderful stuff!

Tchaikovsky was certainly an influence (the two knew each other), but this was written well before Khachaturian. Given that Kalinnikov's reputation remained in the Soviet Union after his death, perhaps Khachaturian was influenced by these two symphonies and Kalinnikov's tone poems? It's an interesting thought.

@Queeen7q
@Queeen7q 2 жыл бұрын

@@SelectCircle Oh, now I got it. But I don't agree... An orchestra playing in Tutti a lyrical melody may sound corny, but it's quite common, and there's a lot of that in the romantic period. Kalinnikov has a lot of influence from the folklore, maybe that's why it sounds kind of common or not so innovative.
