Interesting video. I began this sport/art in 2002. Took it one baby step first, baby steps became kid's step, then teen's steps and eventually full grown and full fledge adult's step. Today, I can throw myself in any given move/technique/drill and go from there, no longer lost, no longer lose all time. BJJ is now my 10 000 piece puzzle, love it. I still hit walls and blues but they are more rare with time, and I build myself out of it, and discover new phases to train and drill.

I think also that sometimes (and I fall into this category), people just want to be reassured that the instructor is ok with the rate at which the student is progressing. I know that my progress is slower, and will continue to be slower, than most people at my gym, and I'm ok with that, but at first I wasn't sure if my instructor was ok with that, which made me question whether I should be training. Lucky for me, it's now clear that the only thing my instructor expects is that I pay attention and train to improve.

I’m not necessarily thinking of quitting but changing gyms. The current gjj gym I’m at don’t spar I feel because I’ve sparred for 1 year prior to attending this gym I want it more now and it’s a learning curve to discover more of this amazing art.

They don’t spar/roll? That’s crazy! We roll at the end of every class! Gotta work out your techniques in love rolls to gain true mastery!
@KamaJiuJitsu6 ай бұрын
Believe it or not (I’m thinking “not”), “sparring/rolling” has its purpose, but sparring/rolling doesn’t work nearly as well as repeated positional training with resistance. The key, is to get in “reps” in a position/sequence, not the randomness of simply sparring/rolling and getting your 10,000 reps in with each position. Sparring for instance, might get you just 5 mount escapes (with full choke in) in an hour, while just 20 minutes of working mount escapes with choke in only, will easily net 25 hard reps. Imagine how many reps you could get in with 60 minutes of this… probably 100+. Now repeat the process over the course of a year of just drilling like this and i will 99% guarantee you, you will DESTROY someone who simply rolled/sparred during that 60 min/day for a year. My 2 cents, if it’s even worth that much.

It's sometimes hard not to quit especially when frustration kicks in. I've trained martial arts for 44 years now...last 5 to 6 bjj and now a 4 stripe blue belt and I suck at jujitsu I'm a karate guy....but my goal is to learn bjj but I struggle
@KamaJiuJitsu Жыл бұрын
It is always a struggle. So I just got used to it. All of a sudden, other “struggles” are no longer struggles.

In general, I really like this channel because of the very insightful perspectives it gives on jujitsu, which I've just started about 2 months ago in my 40s and am freaking loving to death, and life in general... But someone not wanting to do jiu jitsu anymore doesn't mean they're a loser or a quitter, and it's not as if jiu jitsu is the end-all be-all to everything in life. Perhaps, with their own life circumstances and with their idiosyncratic interests, jiu jitsu has just become flat out boring and a waste of time for them. They'd rather put their energy towards something else that they find more useful. That's a totally legitimate point of view for many and it doesn't mean they're idiots or losers. In other words, people can quit jiu-jitsu for completely positive and healthy reasons, and that doesn't necessarily take anything away from jiu-jitsu. Otherwise, I love the content and thank you for all of the awesome videos.

I can’t recall if I phrased it in the way you’re interpreting it. If I did, I apologize, because that certainly wasn’t my intent to label someone who quits Jiujitsu a “quitter.“ On the other hand, if in fact, I did NOT phrase it that way, Then you need to stop looking for things that aren’t there and jumping to guard errr, conclusions.

Awesome advice. I have been struggling the last 8 years from back injuries (2 herniated discs L3/4) and have been in brown belt purgatory for the last 5. It's hard to progress and frustrating especially when I'm sidelined from this injury for weeks and even months at a time. I could hardly get out of bed let alone get on the mat and train. And when I do, I'm back to square one as far as skill level and cardio. I can't tell you the number of times I wanted to quit. This most recent injury has gotten me on that train of thought again of whether or not it's worth my time (I'm 53 years old). But I will say it does help by affirming those 'little victories' and making small, achievable goals for yourself.

Maybe turn down the volume on the background music a tad? I only comment on youtubers that I like btw and I'm not trying to troll! Your awesome!

While I understand that everyone has their own journey; Jujitsu is so subjective in the sense in the point you made about a student not vibing with the instructor or gym. 3 people can start at one gym and 2 get promoted faster than the one and take them all to a different gym and it be the reverse. It's also a business; Meaning that some promotions are to lock certain people in. It's an informal process. I'm just there now to be the best I can be, if I get promoted, great, if I don't ill hang in there. I also think that different instructors teach differently. I'm a white belt and it's fun. I don't think anyone should ever stay at one gym for 6 to 7 years still at a white belt when they're training their buttons off. That's a reflection on the teacher(s).
