Kamala is playing it wicked smart. Walz is actually extremely mainstream, his policies are right down the middle of America. His personality is PERFECT for Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. He's a great messenger, his speech is plain spoken and substantive. He's a genuinely LIKABLE guy, not by leftists, radicals, or whomever, but by average Americans. I know, I'm one of them. Frankly, I think Kamala LIKES being around him, trusts him, and thinks he would make a great partner and POTUS if needed. He's not a pundit pick, he is an Americana pick.

@@dotsmada2855 I'm just saying Walz's "progressive" positions are SHARED by the majority of Americans. 91% of Americans SUPPORT legal protection of the right to vote; 88% of Americans SUPPORT the right to privacy including the right to make reproductive decisions independent of government interference. 84% of Americans SUPPORT religious freedom, with religion being not taught in schools, with separation of church and state. 80% of Americans support universal background checks and assault weapon bans. 80% of Americans say a convicted felon and sex abuser would NOT get their vote for elected office. 67% of Americans and 52% of Republicans support government actions to address climate change. So-called "progressive" positions are actually MAINSTREAM and supported by the majority of Americans. Don't forget the Bipartisan Immigration Bill is supported by the Harris / Walz ticket and was KILLED BY TRUMP / Republicans. Walz (and Harris) is a moderate NUMERICALLY.

Listen to Klein's interview with Walz. Remarkable. Shapiro was the more calculated choice, Walz the more inspired choice. I admire Harris for making it though I am more worried than I was yesterday about winning (PA 19 EC votes). If Harris wins the Walz (and Shatz) program is the way forward for the Democrat Party: build more HOUSES in Blue cities, stuff like that. A real gamble but a wise one. Klein is generally right on most issues in a complex, slightly against the grain, listen to thorny truths we progressives may not want to hear. I took his program about Biden needing to step down in February to the Bank. It really changed my mind.

Like many folks in Minnesota I am a Scandinavian-American. So I don't see the relationship between Socialism and Capitalism as an either/or choice. I see it as an and/also option. The reason why Scandinavia has such a great economy and why their populations’ rate happiest in the sociological datum. Is because their Socialism compliments their Capitalism and their Capitalism supports their Socialism. American's should stop thinking of these two economic options as an either/or choice. When they could also be a very effective and/also option.💙

US citizens for the most part have no idea all the basics they depend on except food are all socialistic endeavors. Corporations, who control our government officials, actually write our federal and state legislation for the most part. They made socialism a scare tactic just as they did communism to control the worker population without rebellion. Americans are indoctrinated from birth into the harder you work the more you'll be rewarded (rarely if ever happens) and work is priority one (how else can you meet your family's needs). If you have a financial struggle it is because you have poor character, your economic standing is your value. Add to that; education taught from a particular perspective, lack of interest, literal exhaustion and a very dangerous situation arises. The Biden administration has made the first real gains for the majority of citizens. The same citizens who pretend he is Satan incarnate. I myself am frustrated and baffled by my fellow citizens.

Walz is authentic. He is 3 dimensional in his thinking -- perhaps 4 -- He knows how to motivate people toward the positive. He represents one of the necessary pillars of democracy: high quality education for all. Harris represents the other necessary pillar of democracy: the same law and justice for all. Together they support each side of the coin we call Democracy. In the words of Leonard Cohen, "Democracy is coming to the U.S.A." "America, the cradle of the best, and of the worst" (L. Cohen). The people of U.S.A. have never had such a contrasting choice. If you want Democracy, vote for Harris and Walz. If you want "1984," vote for the 1 dimensional preditors -- the robber and the shape shifter.

Particularly as a fellow Banana Slug (Kresge/Cowell 1971-76), I am DEEPLY appreciative of the depth of knowledge and humanity that you bring to your work. The interview/conversation with Tim Walz was SO refreshing; I cannot wait for the Vice Presidential debate - not for any hoped-for deflation of Vance (I know that you value his and a few colleagues' commitment to some form of economic populism, if that impulse still functions for him), but just to have the world witness a truly human, thoughtful person attempt to deal with Vance as a fellow human being. I know you don't need any encouragement from me, but... DO keep up the great work you are doing. Ben Golvin from SF...

People are sick of the mad circus that revolves around Trump. The Donald Trump Show. It seems useful to have someone onboard who's able to blow the whistle and cut out the nonsense, and do it in a way that doesn't add to the divisiveness. The objective is not to antagonize the people on the other side but to present them with options. That doesn't mean everyone will take them. Reminding people of their agency is itself important. That should create space for talking about policies. To say, these are the issues that real people care about and here's what we're going to do to address them. Safe isn't what you should go for. Neither is perfection. You just need to be effective in the areas that matter the most and communicate them clearly. A prolonged crisis of trust calls for transparency, authenticity, honesty, and integrity.

The left still doesn't understand Donald Trump. Which is hilarious. A decade and they are still confused. But if you watch the Republican party closely, the Congress Republicans. It makes sense. You have to see through the distraction . Through the rhetoric. Like did anyone report on Donald Trump condemning apple for not making apple products in the United States? That be something that came from the Republican base. Instead they report on the distraction side of trump. Which is intended to be the distraction. It's behind trump that you have the base.

i agree that walz has that midwest school teacher down to earth genuinely happy everyday non-elite guy. he choses language that is simple and relatable. to frame abortion rights as simple as "mind your own damn business" and calling trump and vance weird is language that especially works for younger voters. more recently they've also adopted "creepy". no, harris did not pick a younger version of biden, rather she picked a younger version of bernie sanders who can tell jokes and have a sense of humor

I can appreciate your challenges with Shapiro, but if he had been the VP selection, would you have actually not voted for the Harris ticket because of his presence? This is now a purely philosophical thought process because Shapiro is not the VP, but it might be worthwhile thinking through it. Would not voting for Harris have resulted in a less hawkish (I presume Gaza is the major issue in that) US government even if that "not vote" action resulted in a Trump victory? Would the alternative to Harris be a "better" situation?

If this entire ordeal has taught us leftists anything at all since Biden's horrific debate with Trump, it's that it _is_ possible to bargain with and influence mainstream politics. The best way to do that is _to_ register as a Democrat and vote in every primary. _That's_ how we make sure we get fewer Josh Shapiro's and more Tim Walz's. If we take away our own stake in the party, that vacuum is inevitably going to be filled by someone who may not share our values. And they may have _much_ more outreach.

What Ezra is talking about in Vance’s appeal as described by Carlson is a form of “costly signaling”. It’s a common anthropological principle wherein someone loudly expresses a view that brings condemnation, or courts martyrdom. What costly signaling does is to get people to say “well they must really believe it. Who would voluntarily accept such costs if they did not?”

I'm glad she didn't do what the elites, mega donors and MSNBC clearly wanted. Usually they are wrong and out of touch. This pick of Walz energizes the base and brings Dems together. Shapiro wouldn't have done that. It would have likely just made the previously mentioned folks giddy. I think Harris-Shapiro ticket would have still won, but Walz was the better pick.

Walz is a superior pick to Shapiro, even if Shapiro had no scandals (ie: Greenberg murder, paying SA claim with tax dollars, being pro charter schools, student protestors are like the KKK, derogatory comments about Palestinians, etc.). Shapiro is a city boy and I don't see how he would relate to the working class, every-day Joe. Plus, his Obama emulated speech makes me question his authenticity. Walz is the guy you want to have a beer with ;the guy you'd feel safe around; they guy who really has your back. He's not career politician and the slimy type like Gavin Newsome. ... Harris is a genius for this pick, esp. in the face of the pragmatist who myopically only want to win PA and the in face of those who would race-bait with antisemitism with any chance they get. Bravo, Kamala. You've a backbone.

Go after companies sending our wealth overseas. Make apple make it's products in the United States. Stop bailing out large banks. Make a healthier really balanced healthier economy . Lot of the wealth went out and up from COVID. To the top. Democrats answer is more social programs. Republican base answer is take it back. Don't forget bidens platform of bringing chip manufacturing back to the u.s. Tarriffs. None of that platform Biden claimed actually came from Democrats. It was the Republican base platform that was pushed by trump. It wasn't the democrats. They were identity politics and lost the working class which voted Republican. The working class started voting Republican because they realized it was actually the Republican base that supported them.

Let me briefly explain the independent view from my perspective as a independent. And why I am probably voting Republican. The cultural war has been a giant mess for near a decade. I want to go back to normal. We have a month for pride. One day for veterans. That's just whacked. There is homeless people everywhere. Increasing under Dems. That's just whacked. The drug epidemic has worsened. People are worried of their kids picking up dirty needles at playgrounds. That's just whacked. Can't bring your kid to a playground or a park? The pride parade have half dressed some naked people and said to be family events. That's just whacked. It's not exactly a family friendly fair. A girl here overdosed they found her washed up on the river. That's just whacked. And she's one of many. They have so many illegals in this country it's overloaded social services and they don't even know where and who they all are. What happened to the 400 terrorist linked people? No one knows. That's just whacked. It's all completely whacked. Then the vp running for president is "twerking" at her rally. Is that presidential? No. That's just whacked. Maybe she really did fall out of a coconut tree. Now we have the middle east possible war, our troops overseas being killed by drones. No explanations, no answers, no solution. Just aircraft carriers all hanging out in the middle east. That's just whacked. The Russo Ukraine war, Russia blew through every deterrence . Complete failure. No explanation. Democrats wrong about the entire thing. Failed the entire deterrence thing. Failed the imploding Russia thing. Just plain bad judgment and wrong. No accountability, still no solutions, that's just whacked. Every time they claimed something it turned out wrong. That's like a 100 percent failure rate. Even flipping a quarter you should be right half the time. Economy, they are turning out to be wrong now. It's literally like a 100 percent wrong rate. That's just whacked. Harris tells people to not cross the border . Biden tells China to stop the flow of fentanyl. We had more border crossings and fentanyl than ever. They talk, accomplish nothing. And more dead people can float in the river. You could put someone in the white house with their cabinet. Literally have them flip a quarter and have a much higher probability of success. Just statistically. And everyone is wrong sometimes. But all the time? And the democrats have taken no accountability, for anything. None I've seen. The wars, the drugs and overdoses, the homeless, the border. Especially Russia where they were wrong like 50 times just there. Zero , none, accountability. 400k dead. No accountability. Not even a little bit. The dead from overdoses? No accountability. Not even a little. Let's not forget the hiding bidens condition, last minute candidate change. Forget all that. Mostly .. you have Kamala twerking at her rally. While overdoses float down the river. You don't think independent voters deserve to be upset? Is this like a sick joke? What she do in California? That's full of illegals, homeless, drugs and overdoses isn't it? Pretty much? Made the rest of the country like California , Chicago, ? The democrats either aren't listening to independent voters or they don't care. We've been upset over fentanyl for years. The border for years. The democrat agenda does not align with independent voters .

Do you know why the Vietnam war kept growing and only ened during Nixon's second term? It lasted so long because presidents who were against it, who had written it was impossible to win a war like that, made the safe choice. The guy who wrote it was impossible to win did it after visiting Vietnam as a Senator - John Kennedy. LBJ? Same thing! Nixon? Same thing. Harris did a correct choice - a principles based choice. It was a bold move that I haven't seen ... well ... since FDR died. Now ... there's something that can make the bold choice also the safe choice: Walz has some Sander's like characteristics that a lot of working class americans admire and that may play a more important role in the elections.

Please don’t take this in the wrong way but I would compare this decision to that John McCain made when choosing Sarah Palin. His instincts were bad as far as Palin herself was concerned and maybe he was a little desperate, but the similarities are that she had a folksy way about her that appealed to the masses, as does Mr. W. Also odd (but not “weird”) is that he reminds me of Harry Truman, chosen by FDR for whatever reason. HST had some obvious warts - such as liquidating civilians in Nagasaki and Hiroshima the way he did, but the comparisons I think are apt. The alternatives are far worse by any objective standard (I am Green so can honestly give an honest appraisal). She made an inspired choice, one that likely is historic. Kudos Ms. Harris for a wise and thoughtful decision.
