Fun Fact: That flying turtle that Roshi was riding on to the Ox King's palace is a baby Gamera which is a reference cameo to the actual real life movie monster Gamera himself. Gamera is a famous giant kaiju turtle monster made from Daiei Studios in 1965. He was created with the intent to compete with the success of the Godzilla franchise and Godzilla himself from Toho. In simpler terms, basically Gamera is Sega and Godzilla is Nintendo.

Some would even go as far as to say Gamera's Heisei trilogy movies are some of the best kaiju movies in that era, but no Gamera never at any point manage to come close to "crushing" Godzilla.

They had a successful console that bit into Nintendo's market for a few years, but Nintendo still had the more successful brand worldwide. Then PLAYSTATION came along and severely buried the both of them for the rest of the 90s. Ultimately, Genesis sold 30 million to SNES's 49 million and PS1's 102 million.

This is the memorial moment of “Puff Puff” invented by Toriyama, and later became legacy in Dragon Quest series which Toriyama makes illustration. And That is one of the reason I love those games so much even though the game itself is not same as popular as Final Fantasy series throughout the world.

Some dialogue changes from the Japanese version: Roshi gave Oolong a puff puff by rubbing his face in Oolong's breasts ChiChi tells Goku her dad will give him her hand in marriage, and Goku says he'll take it not knowing what that means

That second change really makes the flashback to that scene in episode 137 inconsistent with the dub dialogue

@@theassortedhobbyist The dub retroactively address the Chi-Chi stuff. Yeah, while Dragon Ball dub is a step forward from GT and Dbz in terms of localization (cause those dubs practically change so much it's insane) it ain't perfect.

Before going any further, good 90% of the characteres' names are a pun or an anagram of sorts. Bulma is a pun on bloomers and her family name is Briefs. Oolong is a type of tea and Puar is also pu-erh tea. 4:01 And this is one of the things that doesn't get translated well. Chi-Chi's name is based on Japanese for "milk" or "udders" and also "father". So he's talking to himself how she's not a dad, so it likely means booba. 7:35 This is basically just Gamera. A giant kaiju turtle that flies around by blasting jets and spinning around. It's kinda, but also not really a competition to the Godzilla franchise. 12:59 The Kamehameha basically means "turtle wave", but it's written in a way that it's spelled the same as the king of Hawaii.

So, I started by watching DBZ. I didn't discover Dragon Ball until much later. Frankly, Dragon Ball is the better work in my book, though I a still a fan of DBZ.

I 100% understand the problem with wanting to watch something, but needing to start from the beginning. That definitely happened to me with some shows I would catch on TV, and as curious as I was about them, I wouldn't watch them because I didn't want to start watching in the middle. And since I would never happen to catch said shows from the beginning during reruns, I would instead choose to just not watch them at all.

This will be a long time coming but hopefully you keep this in mind. That *if* you watch the dubbed version of DBZ that it will be the version with Bruce Faulconer sound track (the composer for the American dubbed version) That is the most iconic and it hits so well and so hard for many of the scenes for DBZ.

Glad you're watching dragon ball before z, its just the right way to watch it and it helps certain character arcs which i wont spoil make a bigger impact and feel earned. Starting with z would be like skipping naruto and starting with shippuden. sure you could infer and figure out the stuff you don't get but its not the same and it will always feel like your missing something. Also for me dragon ball is my favourite out of all the dragon ball shows for it's humour alone. So i can't complain :).

One of the things you pick up on the way to becoming an old master is that most fights aren't worth picking and impressing most people with your prowess just causes problems. Another thing is that when selecting students, aptitude isn't everything: part of the reason Roshi wants to train Goku is that he immediately realized that it isn't usually a great thing for a preadolescent with no supervision to have a phenomenal gift for fighting. At the same time, this isn't urgent and training can wait until the initial quest for the Dragon Balls is over with.

Suzy have you ever notice this fan's name Bashosen. this fan was also there in naruto shippuuden. 4th ninja great war Darui vs Kinkaku and Ginkaku. The bashosen was one of the weapon in the Duo's armory and have almost same effect.

Technically the show does have an intro change, but the song doesn't change, and in the English releases (even when you switch it to Japanese) you (sadly) don't get the second opening. But yeah, it doesn't make sense to start at Z if you have the option. I've never understood why you'd do that since you literally skip the first six sagas of the series if you do that. It's like starting The Two Towers without watching Fellowship of the Ring.
