The name of the cloud is kinto-un in japanese. For the lore it is inspired by an old chinese classic litterature of the monkey king Sun Wukong. But there is lots of things linked to popular culture of that area and time.

i dont really know the lore behind the flying nimbus but sun wukong got it as a present. And the stick (the power pole) on Goku's back was because wukong thought no mortal weapon could handle his power so he got a giant pole that was used to measure the depth of the ocean called the ruijingu bang.

Dragonball is loosley based upon the Chinese classic novel "Journey to the West" (西遊記). It is historical fiction of the real Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang's journey from China to India the get copies of Buddhist sacred scriptures. The historical Xuanzang was successful and spent the rest of his life translating the sutras he obtained into Classical Chinese. The novel, however, is more about the Monkey King. He was a stone monkey given life who becomes the king of the monkeys living on the mountain of fruits and flowers before going up to heaven to learn to become immortal. He does this but is such a troublemaker that the Jade Emperor's court wants him punished. For example his staff is actually a pillar of the palace of Dragon King of the Eastern Sea (I think - I cannot remember exactly which sea) that the Monkey King more-or-less broke off and stole. Nobody can defeat him, however, so they ask the Buddha to intervene. Buddha traps him under a mountain so that sometime in the future, Xuanzang will come across him and free him, and the Monkey King will accompany Xuanzang on his quest as his bodyguard. He become's Xuanzang's disciple, and is given the name Sun Wukong (孫悟空) - which translates into Sun (his surname - like Sun Tzu's) Awakened to Emptiness. Along the way, they meet a lazy and gluttonous pig, who was originally a minor functionary in heaven who screwed up and got reincarnated as a pig on earth for it (Zhu Bajie, 豬八戒, "Eight Commadments Pig") and a desert bandit who is defeated by Sun Wukong and therefore chooses to become Xuanzang's disciple (Sha Wujing, 沙悟淨, "Sand Awakened to Purity"). One of the party's adversaries is the Ox Demon King (牛魔王 - literally "Ox," "Demon" and "King"), who, like every other hostile they encounter, wants to eat Xuanzang because he believes that eating his flesh will make one live forever. There is also a river dragon that eats Xuanzang's horse and is punished by being turned into a horse to carry the monk to India. All this matters for Dragonball because quite a few of the characters that will appear in the upcoming episodes are based upon these characters. If you want to read The Journey to the West, the Foreign Language Press from Beijing publishes a decent English translation in a four-part set of mass market paperbacks. Depending on which of the Three Doctrines one might prefer, the novel could be seen as Buddhist anti-Daoist propaganda, but the story is still good - for the first 1/2to 3/4 of it. Then it starts to get pretty repetitive because, as far as I can tell, the author wanted to pad out the story to exactly 100 chapters.

In the legend it wasn't a single cloud Sun Wukong had, it was instead a technique called the "Cloud Sumersault". It was his staff that was a "gift" from the Dragon King of the Eastern Seas. I say gift like that because Wukong pretty much demanded the Dragon King give him a weapon. None of the weapons in the armory suited him until the Dragon King's wife suggesting they give Wukong a useless size shifting iron pillar that was in the back of the armory, Wukong loved it, because of course he did...

13:28 Chinese-Australian here - The cloud is called the flying nimbus, and Goku is also based on a character named Sun Wukong 孙悟空 (his Japanese name "Son [Surname] Goku" is written in the same 3 Chinese characters). Both Sun Wukong and the flying nimbus (筋斗云 - Kinto'un in Japanese and Jin Dou Yun in Mandarin) are from a Chinese folk tale named "Journey to the West 西游记".

It's great to see in Dragon Ball how Akira Toriyama managed to introduce the style that works to this day of the protagonists being "idiots" for some things and others they are geniuses as a character from Dragon Ball itself says "The Miserable is a genius"

In general, things are toned down, but it's not impossible to find that kinda stuff nowadays. The third chapter of Seven Deadly Sins' sequel manga, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, has a similar scene to Goku and Bulma last episode with it's main character and another girl, only this time with on-screen nudity and a full page worth of groping.

i'm in shock that you recorded the first two episodes of Dragon Ball on January 2023 . i am grateful that you did not lost those two videos for some reason . your reactions to those two episodes were phenomenal , in my opinion . this thumbnail surprised me. lol. In the US version they say that Goku is 14 in the original Dragon Ball. In the original Japanese version he was only 8 and didn't know about the differences between boys and girls. He thought she was selfish not to share the bed and found room to lay between her legs. That was when he realized something was missing lol

Because he doesn’t understand the difference between boys and girls. So he removed her underwear to see what was going on. He panicked, and thought she “had her balls stolen”. Of course, Bulma checked on the dragon balls and the story moved on. It was an innocent mistake made by an ignorant boy.

I had explained this to my niece once when I was re-watching: Bulma's the first girl Goku's ever seen. Before he met her, it was only him and his grandpa in the middle of nowhere. His Grandpa DID tell him how to act around a girl (to be polite and cordial around), but he's never told Goku what a girl looks like. In ep. 2, Bulma was sleeping all sp_ead-eagl_ and it reminded Goku of how he and his Grandpa used to sleep (His Grandpa sleeping how Bulma did and Goku would sleep with his head between his grandpa's legs) and retried it with Bulma. He realized quickly that he couldn't feel anything, so he took off her underwear to find out why. Upon seeing her part he assumed that someone took her hose and water balloons cause her lady part looks like a slash or a big cut.

In the manga Grandpa Gohan would (for some reason) let Goku use his crotch area as a pillow when he slept, while Bulma was passed out one night Goku wanted to do the same with her but noticed something was off and literally didn't feel right (he even patted her because he couldn't feel any "cushion" and was confused). So then he removed her panties to see what the deal was since he'd never met a girl in his life and they never got put back on. Later Bulma, somehow not realizing she wasn't wearing any, and Golu met master Roshi and welp, the rest is bloody history.

悟空の尻にはモザイクがかけられていたのに、ブルマにはモザイクもなければ、そのままサムネイルにも使われている事を不思議に思いつつ、笑ってしまいます。 ブルマについて、今でも不思議に思うのは…悟空に尻を触らせようとしたり、亀仙人にパンツぐらい良いかと何度も見せちゃう様な気持ちの割り切りが出来るのに、ドラゴンボールで願いたいのは素敵なボーイフレンド。 別にその性的アピールを使え！と言う訳ではないが、同年代の男の子にはそれぐらいの積極的アタックが出来ない子だったのかな？などと考えてしまう。 まあ、ブルマの周りに魅力的な男が居なかったのかもしれないか。

The dub is charming but man they just never want to shut up. Not even for 10 seconds. Yeah there is lots of lore and references in this, it´s called Journey to the West with Son Wokong. That´s the whole inspiration for Dragonball. Never read it but the stories are cracy from the little I have heard.

I just finished watching Dragon Ball for the first time a few days ago and I thought it was great, I almost recommend watching Dubbed with subtitles because a lot of the more adult jokes are translated in the sub but you still get to watch the dubb

If you think Roshi is a perv, you should check out Happosai from Ranma 1/2. That old gnome makes Roshi look like a saint in comparison.😂 Speaking of Ranma 1/2, like this show, it was a martial arts action comedy anime made in the 80s, so it has a bit of a similar tone. And it’s actually getting an anime remake soon too. If you like Dragon Ball, then I recommend watching Ranma 1/2, the original, before the remake comes out.
