Another angle to Indonesia's importance is the presence of rainforests and how the decision to exploit or preserve these resources marks a turning point in the future of the earth's climate. Indonesia appears to be taking "a wait and see" approach in regards to its climate policy which means that if the developed nations don't lead the way and present Indonesia with viable investment plans from which Indonesia can develop green energy and industry, Indonesia is at risk of selling off their resources to China or becoming an oligarchic agro-state like Brazil.

As an Indonesian i have little hope for the developed western nations to lead the way as you described. So far what i see from the developed western nations is nothing but hypocrisy at its worst form. Take a look the palm oil for example, its been getting bad rep in the west, the UE is planning to ban the import, Indonesia rightfully retaliate by stopping the export of nickles (prefer to build smelters with help from china), and what did the EU do? They SUE Indonesia to the WTO. It's obvious the west still see asian relationship as "masters to slaves relationship" where they can force any demand they want akin to the colonialization era.

The lack of FTA with other countries create a situation where Indonesian foreign trade is 40% to china, way higher than regional neighbors who have a more balanced trade.
@camovault2 жыл бұрын
@@FaizalMohdMustapa it is true that unlike other large domestic economy such as China and India, Indonesia probably doesn’t have comparable export prowess just yet. But this is not because of Indonesia is non-alignment country but rather because of domestic politics issue and its also not wrong to blame complacency (for domestic consumption driven economy policy) as one of the causing factor. However, major shift has taken place during the tenure of Indonesia 7th President Joko Widodo. His aggresive infrastructure building policy has been spurred by the country willingness to attract foreign investment and pummel more export, not so much in rare commodities anymore, but also value added goods. This is evident in mining sector. During the pandemic time, Indonesia export has actually increased in most sectors and together with that large domestic market, has helped the country economy to stay afloat during the pandemic. Also under Jokowi tenure, I think there has been 2 Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement signed with Australia and South Korea, which obviously to stimulate much more balance trade. China is still inevitably the major trading partner with Indonesia, but this trend also occurse elsewhere around the globe even in Europe
@FaizalMohdMustapa2 жыл бұрын
@Yoga Simson no doubt Jokowi is a revolutionary leaders but whether the next president & the one after it would continue the reform agenda or goes back to the seclusion mentality is another matter. Indonesia has always been a major trade hub since thousands of years ago, thats why portugese and dutch had a conquest here to monopoly stuff India and china have always been our trade partner since thousands of years ago, we got hindu and buddhism from them, we had major hindu-buddha kingdom here such as srivijaya and majapahit, and our relationship with india is one of the most friendly one, we send each others cows and rice since way back then I dont think our choke point is gonna be a major issue compared to suez and the south american ones because we are not as narrow We hate both capitalism of west and communism of east, we had major events related to both parties, we were colonized by the dutch for 3 centuries and even they still came after we declare our independence after ww2 and they bring their british and indian allies, we also had a communist coup and massacre back in the 60s which made communism got banned forever here, we are the founder of not aligned movement, we want none of your political bullshit, we have our own ideology and identity, and boi you aint gonna conquer a 270 million people country even with your most advanced military arsenal, we will fight like the heroes of stalingrad did, we have more people than you have bullets, and since 90% of us are muslim you better expect some jihad when you mess with us

I never lived in java so i dont know if people have enough food there or not As for the tactics of war i think we can loot or steal from enemy forces to use their equipment for ourself Yes the first thing to do in war is to cripple the air defences, but we are not some poor country as we were back in the 40s right? We do have surface to air missile now, and we also have solid air forces despite the old age of equipment Now comparing to russian invasion of ukraine i think they rather perform poorly based on the days have passed and they still havent taken over significant territory of kyiv I think as a defending side we can give our opponent a formidable challenge, and given the mob mentality of our people we can blitz through ground forces and they wont stand a chance of securing an area for long Although if we did got crippled on our air defences and somehow people got no weapon to fight then i agree that we are screwed
@worlds30612 жыл бұрын
@@jamesmarco516 One thing you forgot is morale, the Russian performs poorly in Ukraine is because their troops have low morales, while the Ukranians their morale are so high even their own people abroad (mostly men) came back to aid their country's defence. Keep in mind The Ukranians weren't really known for their nationalism and they don't really have that big of a manpower but as we can see they give the Russian a run for its money. Now imagine 200+ Millions Indonesian with a shit ton of resources compared to Ukraine and a difficult terrain we'll make sure the war will be 10× as worse than Vietnam.

It's sad that lots of Indonesians don't know or understand about these strategic points. As a result, our trade is very weak compared to Malaysia and Singapore, and our maritime power is very weak despite our large coastline. The government instead gave the most money to the army instead to the army (ask the British how stupid that is to not invest in naval power as a maritime nation). The army had lots of connections and lobbying power in the government due to their past (especially in Suharto reign).

Well i did mean in maritime trade too. Our shipping industry is very weak and broken. For example, only recently that we can actually ship out with our own ships registered here. Before, we have to ship out with ships registered in Singapore, if you can believe that. It's because the workers there are corrupt, incompetent, and unprofessional that it can't reach the required standards. Shipments inside nation too is still very expensive that a good shipped from Europe is cheaper than a good shipped from Jakarta to Papua. Non aligned or aligned, Indonesia has no excuse to undersell their maritime powers. It's vital militarily and economically

I honestly worried about our geographical position. If we ever made stupid decisions like what Ukraine did, we will end up like them. Crushed by the big power interest. The current government have started to realize our importance in global politics. We have started millitery shopping spree lately. Our major shopping is we planned to bought 42 Rafale, 36 F-15, about 14 frigates from Europe and Japan, and additional 4 more submarine. This shopping mostly caused by our concern of China's threats on our Natuna EEZ and Natuna island itself when Chinese war against Taiwan broke up. Moreover, if the war did happened, others millitery vessels will moved through out our sea, and we need our own military power to secure our territory to make sure they played by the rules and not just thrashing our territory as their fighting sites.

Indonesia is the first country that ever withdraws from UN, and we inniciated to made asia-africa union for facing neocolonialism in the world. And this movement align with Indonesia constitution, we have to protect peace in this world and our foreign policy is free-active. This mean as a country, indonesia play significant role to be mediator between western and eastern country. And from that stand point we create the non-block country movement. If a country is located at a globally important geographical location, no great power is able to seize it because the other great powers need the country too. So because China is unwilling to let US dominate such important maritime routes, and of course US will not let China dominate either, it becomes a "nobody can own this important place--it must be neutral grounds" situation. However, the country cannot be too weak either. If Indonesia were to split apart into several small countries, there would be arguing between the islands over who controls the straits, what laws to follow, etc. Such chaos is not acceptable to global powers who need to pass through quickly and safely. So in the event of internal fracturing, global powers are incentivized to support a centralized government.

Internal division is indeed a very big issue in Indonesia. Other than the geographic division, if you look at the surface, national identity and patriotism is strong among the population. But if you look further, tension between races, religion, and social class is a major problem until today and makes this unity and nationalism very fragile, that any major crisis will divide the population instead of uniting it, like what happened in 1998.
